Really enjoying the content. Another great spot to fish mackerel in Dartmouth is at the end of Jamieson street. I used to live in the condo building down there and would sometimes go fishing on my lunch break. It's not hard to catch 10 of them within 30 min if they are biting.

If you haven’t seen it already you should check out my most recent fishing video, I filmed it in Bedford on the docks behind mill cove. I had a great day catching lots of mackerel in an hour or 2 of fishing. It seems lately like I will get on mackerel every second or third trip. Soon it should be more around I hope. Thanks for watching 🙏

Thanks for the videos. Really enjoyed your content. I did some mackerel fishing around Bedford wharf, Eastern Passage and some other fishing spots around Halifax area but couldn't figure out your location in this video. Seems like this is a great place to go for mackerel and pollack one day.

BTW on my Sabibki rigs the 8 tag lines were each 2cm long. Trimming them back made it a whole lot easier to untangle.

In your video you mention your Sabiki rig has number 4 size hooks. I had bought a bundle of Sabiki rigs that came with hook sizes 8, 10, and 12 where 8 was the smallest and 12 the largest (these hooks from China seem to use reverse size numbering). 1- For mackerel how critical is hook size? 2- Does time of day make any difference for mackerel? - I'm usually fishing somewhere between 7:30-10 in the morning. 3- Finally how important is having a minnow looking weight rather than a bell shaped sinker on the end? Good detail in this video.
@Howwerelivingfishing2 жыл бұрын
Great questions. When it comes to hook sizes, I get totally confused by the numbers sometimes. I find for mackerel the hook size isn’t that important. I try to go for smaller rather than larger if I have a choice. Time of day isn’t important as far as I know. I’ve caught them early in the morning, and after dark as well. And having a minnow looking weight doesn’t matter at all. It may add a little extra flash but is only needed for its weight. Lots of guys just use tear drop/bell shaped weights and it works just fine.

Hello I’m new to Halifax. Tried fishing in Kings Wharf, that’s awesome. Kept a few large mackerels and smoked them, but not sure if it is safe to eat fishes from urban harbour?
@Howwerelivingfishing Жыл бұрын
I’ve done it many times. I’d never eat any molluscs or shellfish from the harbour. The mackerel also migrate annually, so it’s not like they live in the harbour, they just pass through.

Hi amazing catch, is july still be the good time to catch mackerel? thanks
@Howwerelivingfishing Жыл бұрын
Yes July should be a good time to try. They start running in Nova Scotia around late June or early July, and start seeing less of them around September/October. August seems to be the best time of the season, but all of this depends on the weather and the temperature of the water. Thanks for watching 🙏

Hi, when is the best time for catching mackerel? Thanks
@Howwerelivingfishing Жыл бұрын
Usually around august is the best time for Halifax I think.
@Howwerelivingfishing Жыл бұрын
You can start catching them before august but I find that’s when you’ll catch the most and the biggest ones.

Hi, friend! What can you catch now in January?
@Howwerelivingfishing Жыл бұрын
Good question, it depends where you want to fish. In this salt water area that I fished in this video, I probably wouldn’t have much luck catching anything I’d be allowed to keep. The ground fish season for this area (Halifax harbour and west) is closed for the month of January, and the mackerel won’t likely be around because they like warmer water. once the lakes are frozen enough for it to be safe to fish, there will be opportunities for ice fishing around town. Make sure you check the regulations because most lakes will be closed for the season, and only extended season lakes can be fished.
@Howwerelivingfishing Жыл бұрын
I went to this same spot pretty recently and caught a couple small pollock, out of 3 trips. Good luck, hope you can get on some fish this winter. 👍

are cunners ground fish?
@Howwerelivingfishing2 жыл бұрын
There is no recreational fishery for cunners I don’t think. So for the DFO regulations cunners don’t fall under the “ground fish” regulations. As far as I know you are not allowed to retain cunners around here.
@Howwerelivingfishing2 жыл бұрын
I could be wrong. Any questions like that would be worth calling the DFO about. I call them all the time to clarify rules.
@spiderman08632 жыл бұрын
The cunners shagged off and I shagged off too. I started fishing for pizza pockets. Nevada pull tabs are the way to go and the DFO has nothing to do with it.

Where in the hell is this? I know exactly where that shore is in Dartmouth you’re across from but you don’t look like you’re far enough away to be in Halifax. Something is odd here.
