When I was spearfishing and wanted some Sheepshead and they weren't around at the time, just like you said about letting the oyster "smell" get in the water, all I had to do was scrape a few barnacles and oysters off the pilings with the tip of my spear, making sure I broke them open a bit so the barnacle and oyster "meat" would chum the water, and the Sheep would come a runnin'.

No problem, glad you enjoyed it! Most of the breakoffs I've had on drum or sheepshead are from them dragging the line through structure. If you don't have access to rubberbands for braces go to staples and find one smaller than a dime and use it

Stop struggling opening up the oysters. It's very common to see people attack the muscle upfront. That is the wrong way to open up an oyster. Find the "hinge" on the back of the oyster. Stick a flat object between the hinge. I usually use a screw driver. Twist and pry the 2 halves apart. The hinge comes apart like a hot knife through butter. No effort at all. Try it, it works! If you shell oyster for eating, use this technique. You'll be enjoying shucking oysters like never before. Add tequila, lime and a shot of tabasco. YUM!!!!

Still loving that 360 cam, so much that I plan on getting one with a scuba rated case soon. I don’t suppose you have an Amazon affiliate account so I can throw some money your way for suggesting the camera?
@ckwoutdoors3 жыл бұрын
That is awesome, you will love it! The only thing I dislike about the dive housing for underwater shots is that the bottom of the case is visible. It isnt edited out like the monopod is (unless I just haven't figured it out, which is possible too...) so you just have to figure out how to hold the camera to get what you want without the dive housing in the shot (the visible portion is pretty small and easy to frame a shot around). Not a huge deal at all, just a learning curve. I will say that surprisingly editing the footage on the phone app is far easier than the computer software because on the phone you can move the phone around to look where you want to see in the shot, where as on the computer you have to use the mouse which makes it tricky. Just something Ive noticed! They are so cool and get some amazing shots! I dont have an Amazon affiliate account at the moment, but I appreciate the thought! I will most likely eventually set up a Patreon account for those who want to support the channel, but I just have not yet.

I used oysters and muscles for fishing several times , roughly an year or two ago , but don't remember having much luck . Sometimes I would wrap them up in pantyhose or I found out that if I left them on the grill way longer than usual they would come out rubbery which they usually wouldn't come off the hook when casting . Maybe in the near future I'll try some scallops since they are really firm or atleast when improperly cooked , I guess . Actually 2020 , 2021 , and first quarter of 2022 you might have seen me collecting oysters at boat ramps , Navy Point and 17th Avenue were my favorites . Collected so many oysters I would be surprised if thereare any keepers at these two locations left , ha ha ha . I might be back to oystering soon , though won't be at those locations but are looking into an paddleboard and have been thinking about fiberglassing the outside to increase its durability to gather from pilings. I'm thinking there might be some monsters at I-10 or Garson Point bridges .

I haven't found the same thing vacuum sealing them, but I do have a tip to try. I've heard people say if you put them in a bag and fill it with water, then freeze it, they thaw out to be just as fresh as they were before freezing them. I have not personally tried it yet, but may work for you!
@johnradomskijr92522 жыл бұрын
A good friend showed a bunch of use the best solution I have ever found for fishy smell and that is to rise in a bowl of water with say about a 1/2 cup of white vinegar for maybe 10 second then rinse with tap water. This worked exceptionally well with a bag of frozen sea scallops that smelled terrible after defrosting we rinsed them 3 times in water and vinegar because during the first 2 rinses it looked blue similar to flour wax we learned later that this is from the brine they are soaked in before freezing to extend shelf life. I use this all the time now especially with store bought seafood that has been frozen and all most alway smells a little.

@ckwoutdoors3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the concern. We looked into this before doing it in the last few videos, and certain areas are prohibited, like Escambia Bay, but the East Bay section of Pensacola Bay is open. Also a lot of the regulations seem to have to do with harvesting for consumption, and food safety, rather than using for bait. I certainly need to look into it more, but from the research I have done on FWC's website, in Pensacola Bay (excluding Escambia Bay) it is legal as long as they are 3" or greater. It is showing closed season as July 1st through Spetember 30th

No, not really. If you get into a really big one just keep the rod as centered in front of you as possible. The only risk really is if you're fighting a big fish off the side and leaning back the opposite way to get leverage, if that line suddenly snaps you immediately will fall backwards and could lose your balance if you're not expecting it. I just try to lean back into the seatback, rather than off to either side and I've never had an issue, and I've caught/hooked bigger fish than this one off the yak!

Buy an oyster knife and save your hands from getting mangled. A cheapie oyster knife is like $5 or so. You find the hinge on the back part of the shell, usually its the part that the oyster has connected to whatever its stuck to. Stick the knife in there and then twist, the oyster will pop right open. Once you know what to look for, its very easy to spot the hinge and it is so much faster and easier than trying to smash them open

that is overkill for sheepshead. I use 10 or 15lb braid and a 15lb leader. I fish bridges just like this and I have caught some absolutely massive sheepshead, my best this summer is 12lbs. I dont usually have problems losing fish in the structure, you just have to know how to finesse them

@@afout07 I completely understand your logic just a lot of places where I fish you got a horse amount fast and it just seems braided line works much better when you're trying to horse a fish because there's no stretch in the line obviously you can catch them on whatever if you're a good fisherman

Small hair rubber band and it’ll help keep them on better.

Have you ever recaught your lost gear on a fish? That would be wild to put in all that effort, lose the gear to the fish, then have the fish go for your bait a SECOND time!

I have actually had that happen several times! The only one I think I have on film is a sheepshead my buddy caught that had my hook in its mouth after breaking me off earlier in the day in the video I filmed in Destin!

@@ckwoutdoorsI'll use some fish string to secure the bait to the hook 👍🏾

Be very very careful you don't cut yourself on the oyster shell. Oysters and clams will give you an infection almost immediately. Keep some good first aid stuff with you when you go out so you can clean a wound well.

This is very true! I've cut myself a few times but have been lucky so far. I've come a long way with fishing since this video and don't use oysters as much anymore, but I've gotten a lot better at using them when I do haha. Going back and watching this, I was so messy with them before 🤣

@ckwoutdoors here's the odd part- in a die hard fisherman. I learned about the shellfish going thru culinary school. Lol. So far only 1 infection in my thumb. They cut it open and a swear my body was rotting from the inside out. God it stunk so bad.
