LOVE your work, Kale! Content, delivery, and as a filmmaker. Daaaang. I moved to San Diego this past summer. I watched dozens of videos for beginners -- hours and hours. I had a feeling I was pissing peeps off lately but no idea why. Finally someone told me "dude, you can't cut people off!" I apologized and asked him a couple times what I did wrong. He appreciated me asking and gave a super brief comment about the priority. Enough for me to Google the crap out of the topic this weekend and watch more videos! It was hard to watch, like "yup, I do that, I do that, check, check, check." I feel horrible but never meant to do harm. I tried to look around as best I could and be respectful, but without knowing of any "order", being new and hyperfocused on not dying but trying to apply so many things in a fraction of a second and the seconds leading up to that moment... I snaked a lot of peeps but I'm not unethical because I really tried! I was clueless. I plan on giving other noobs a tip to watch surfing etiquette videos when that time comes. Just when I see someone unknowingly being "that guy". It really sucked not knowing and just thinking others were jerks when I've been the jerks. My apologies to all! Thx for all the great material, and love your style and skills in the water, on camera, and post production.

My beach is usually crowded to the point of the order breaking down. In this case the drop in rule is the only etiquette followed. It’s tough because the wave hogs take over, and one has to be quick and smart about wave selection. I usually have to call off multiple people when I catch a wave, just to let them know I’m there. Thanks for sharing your advice about keeping the vibe fun and safe!

yeh it can be tricky - I just try to avoid that situation but sometimes no choice
@lonememe96743 жыл бұрын
As a new, and older, surfer this is what freaks me out. I learned in Mexico and everyone was pretty chill even when it got a little crowded, but I wasn't a fan of the chaos at all. I avoid resort riding on my snowboard for this reason, and it seems like it's even worse in the water because there are sharp fins and hard things that'll hurt you with seemingly less control. I'm hoping to head out to Cali or Florida to learn some more but the idea of navigating crowded lineups is so intimidating as a newb. I want to stay out of people's way while I progress, but I can't just miss every wave because I'm trying to be respectful. Feels like a catch-22 and I'll just have to be ready for someone being upset with me about something.

Yea I just started surfing in Cali honestly some people are dicks like I’ll catch a wave Iwhere I’m in the perfect spot to get it don’t have to move but someone will swim around me to get it sooner and say the wave was there’s and I shouldnt have took it

Your series is thorough and excellent. Here on the east coast of the US, I can't say that I've ever witnessed this theoretical priority line concept when it's firing. Usually the alphas paddle back out to their ideal spot and get ready to go again, including what you call snaking. Some "might" wait for one or two to have a go as their courtesy, but that's about it. Other than that, every man for himself for good wave position.
@KalesBroccoli5 жыл бұрын
locals and good surfers might get a little more priority sometimes - numerous factors at play here.

Usually the take off out the back is more difficult. Steeper in front of rocks etc and no guy with experience that can takeoff there is going to wait in a 500m line of learner/intermediate surfers to possibly get a wave down the line on the softer take off. Iv surfed for 30 years and get told I'm snaking at my local, but it's always a guy with 5years experience that does not want to take off under the lip in front of rocks. Even though these days local or age isn't respected at some point 6000days of extra surfing experience allows you to just take. Sorry. This is such a great vid. Really good timing for me. I'm working towards intermediate and can pull maneuvres in 2-3 ft surf but when it gets bigger and more crowded I struggle. I recently surfed a point break that was split into 2 groups of about 6 on the main peak then 4 on the inside including me. The most difficult bit to navigate was staying out of the way when a set came in and to do it successfully it meant sitting only slightly on the shoulder then keeping an eye on the sets and bailing to the shoulder and out when a set came in (to catch a wave I had to cut back into the inside peak). On one wave I ended up with a surfer taking off in front of me and did what I was told early on which is paddle to the whitewater but the shape of the waves meant that I did not quite make it. Everyone was fine and friendly about it but another surfer said just paddle towards the shoulder even if you might end up very close to the line of where the surfer taking off would end up surfing along the face.

NIce advice Kales! I wish your advice would be heeded at our local. Crowds have erupted in last couple years and the best wave take off will have 20+ by 7am when there's swell. The shame is, its the experienced guys completely ignoring everything you say. So, you get good surfers with pumped up, arrogant attitudes, snaking and dropping in on anyone they please. And they come in groups, so you can't say anything or you'll get a verbal stoush started in no time. Its bollux that's takes away from the whole principle of surfing. I live/surf the Gulf Coast of FL, which is almost all beachbreak . Generally, the one closest to the peak and paddling first has priority. Because our peaks are so shifty, you may be out of position on the first wave and in position on the next. Two guys can be paddling for the same wave, but we usually let the one closer to the peak have the wave, assuming you're both planning on going the same direction. Just never paddle and drop in if someone is already coming down the line towards you

Do you have some advice for intermediate women? I surf in France, Portugal and sometimes Australia, and a lot of the time its pretty mucho out there, especially in France. I get out of the way and only catch the waves that are left or have been left from the better surfers. This make me sometimes frustrated because I do have right of way some times when I think, ok, I will join the line up and go for it, but the guys just go. Other times I see girls who say out loud, its the girls turn whine about it. I hate this also. Women are quite capable of catching waves and dont need extra help, but how can I hold my place. Of course im only intermediate and not as good as most of the guys out there. In Europe there are less women than in Australia. I try to surf 8 months of the year. Look forward to some advice.

I have been at many beginner-breaks when learning to surf and i'm wondering: If there is a lineup of around 10 to 15 people and a current at the peak, is it considered snaking if the guy before you can't paddle against the current as good as yourself? Is it considered snaking if you 'overtake' the people infront of the you (preferably beginners) who repeatedly fail to paddle into a wave, thus aborting the wave BUT STILL claim back 'their' place in the lineup? Is it considered snaking if you 'overtake' beginners in the lineup with an instructor on their side that clearly have no intention to paddle closer to the top of the peak? Is it considered snaking if you overtake chit-chatting friends that clearly don't intend to paddle towards the peak in an efficient manner because they simply 'move together as a team' or 'have been here longer than you'. Is it considered being snaked if the local surfers always gets the first spots in line regardless of how long you have waited as a 'tourist' in the lineup? I got flamed for all those 'missteps' above when learning how to surf. Overall it certanly was a very negative experience learning to surf in such crowded areas. If i would have followed 'good etiquette' at all times, I am sure i would have never catched a single wave those days. From that I've learnt: If there is a surfbreak with more than 20 people lining up at peak, it's probably better to not paddle out at all and come back at another day or time of the day. Nothing good can come from overcrowded waves, regardless whether you intend to follow good etiquette or not.

Great topic today! I would love to hear more about paddling back out safely in a crowded line up when you don't complete the wave as optimally as you'd prefer - or if you totally blow it and end up right in everyone's way. How do you safely get back outside? Also - when is priority used? If I go for a wave and miss it, do I go to the back of the line up? And I get that this is all grey and there isn't a definite. I'd just appreciate more perspective on the topic. The visuals with the magnets and white board were also helpful. Thanks!
@tencm7385 жыл бұрын
If you blow it completely like on a crowded reef break and end up right in front of everyone just have to either paddle straight up sideways and come back around as best as possible or if sets are coming just go straight up and either duck dive under oncoming surfers or just do your best to dodge and scramble around - it happens. Priority is used if you make a genuine attempt for the wave and miss it you have to go back to the back of the line up and wait again, if your in the spot and everyone knows it you gotta hold it, can turn and consider a wave but if you want it must show disinterest early so everyone knows you still have priority and others know early enough to get it if they want it. Pros are snakes pure and simple, with the worst selfish attitude in the water, yet somehow think it’s right and funny. Once you go pro, you’ve decided to surf for money, not for fun, and that makes it more important to get waves than it is to share the stoke. That being said, I cannot change it. I’d rather surf a smaller spot and enjoy myself.

Nicely done! I’m curious, how would you approach a situation where you have two dozen North American east coast surfers with absolutely no knowledge or regard for etiquette mixed in with a few sups who completely troll a lineup and snake every good wave in a set. And by the way, us goofy footers are serial killers which adds a bit of an extra element to the scenario : )

Maybe that shit works in Australia mate, but here in Cali, we got 15 to 20 or more people in the water. Nobody has time to wait for mushy weak waves like we have out here. This ain’t the DMV… People have a short window and shit to do. Get a wave when you can. 4 surfers…. Yeah right!

In theory this sounds nice. There's a pecking order at every break. Nobody takes turns or shows consideration anymore. Locals are ready to fight and pros are in their own world. They think you want to just watch them.

pecking order helps provide structure and allows for a heathy dose of conscientious localism too.

If you don't want to get any waves!! Sadly the only way to get your "fair" share in a crowded local line up is to be a dick, ignore people and snake. Sadly it's the way it is. I've tried to be nice and take my turn, but if you're the only one doing it, you get nothing. You have to change your habits, or take up a new sport.

Id like loss of priority explained when you miss a wave.
@KalesBroccoli5 жыл бұрын
basically if you paddle for a wave and miss it, you go to the back of the line
@wesleyturner19795 жыл бұрын
Kales Broccoli what if it looks good and shits out and you really didn’t paddle to hard for it, or backed off...more of moving yourself into position? I’ve been surfing for a long time but it’s always good to know what others are expecting people to do so you don’t piss anyone off especially at a place where you don’t surf often.
@KalesBroccoli5 жыл бұрын
@@wesleyturner1979 if you commit to it, you've spent your turn. If you just have a look, see if anyone else is bustling for position and then make up your mind how you want to proceed. It's just like the WSL priority system really - if you really put in strokes but. miss it , then you've used your turn. Got loads more coming on this channel too brother so check it out 🙌🏽

Ideal world yeah? What about the longboarder (me) who sits further out or the local who believes he owns the wave? Ideals are peaceful, history is violent!

@KalesBroccoli5 жыл бұрын
longbparders have to sit out further to avoid sets, but they should be very cognisant of letting the people who've been waiting catch their waves. If anything, they should wait even longer

This is a great explanation but unfortunately where I live and surf no one waits or has etiquette. It’s a free for all every single time. It’s really frustrating when 95% of people in the water are wave hogs. California needs a lesson in common decency
@KalesBroccoli5 жыл бұрын
I haven't really seen a line up where everybody does this - it is hard sometimes to read the situation and act accordingly - it takes time in the water and confidence :)

@KalesBroccoli5 жыл бұрын
It's not about being female - its about owning the space in the line up :) I've seen Steph Gilmore totally kill it at Snapper as much as someone like Mick. Comes down to ability and assertiveness :) Good luck!
@catalinagomez9245 жыл бұрын
@@KalesBroccoli In a certain way, I do agree with you. Gilmore also has a lot of experience and she is a local at Snapper too. But most of the time when I am in the water, is usually men that come across as snakes and the ones being aggressive. Also sometimes women can be terrible in the water too. It should be about what you video talks about, anyone that surfs, should follow that very simple rule ;-D Thank you again for the videos you make, I have learnt a lot from them. :-)))

Great vid. Sadly, the example at 7:50 or snaking the line up happens 97.3% of the time in SoCal. Damn reptiles! Therefore, save your $$$ and go on a surf trip to a third world country for about ten days and have a ton of fun!
