How to caulk a toilet bowl to a floor
After watching this video, you'll easily be able to caulk around toilets with your Dripless caulking gun and your Cramer Fugi kit profiling tool which you can't find at Home Depot. You have to buy your Cramer caulking tool from Amazon.
Caulking toilet base to the floor
Then you can teach others how to caulk a toilet to a floor with silicone caulk, a Dripless caulking gun, your Cramer Fugi kit, and you'll be caulking bathrooms in no time.
Caulking toilet to floor
We use the thinnest bead of silicone caulk for caulking toilet to tile floors. Then we tool down the perfect silicone lines with the Cramer Fugi tool. This is what caulking the base of the toilet is all about. Whenever you are caulking bathroom walls and floors, it is best to use silicone caulk. Latex caulk will only dry up and crack over time, and it will discolor and soak up stains.
Here are some caulking tips for you. Always silicone toilet to the floor. We only use silicone around toilet base when caulking toilet to floors. When caulking toilet to tile floors, latex caulk would only dry and crack over time, but silicone caulk is waterproof and won't stain.

Jeff, i watch all your videos, and give you an A for your work. if you come to CA, i'd give you a job working for me, but i just couldn't let you caulk. that was shameful. that "tool' leaves a residual film on the floor and toilet which will attract dust/dirt and become discolored. and that profile leaves too much caulk. out here we use a urethane or latex caulk, or siliconized latex, never never 100% silicone, and the 'concave' method is a lot quicker and neater. and why at 13:40 is there a gap at the trim tile and floor tile behind the toilet ?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 5 жыл бұрын
@@normhodgkinson6965 Actually, we use the tool to scrape off all the residue afterwards, and usually does not leave any residue. That's the whole design of it, is that it is supposed to scrape everything off. If you push against the floor and the side of the toilet or tile wall, it should scrape off all the silicone. Good eye on noticing that gap behind the toilet. Toilet was placed several days earlier in a rush by homeowner, had to be placed that day when there was no caulk in stock for the tile baseboard. That tile was caulked a few days later once the store got stock of that bisque colored siliconized sanded grout. replenished.

@@jeffostroff well then, maybe i would let you caulk here in CA. i agree about using tape. it leaves a line. i don't like it.
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 5 жыл бұрын
@@normhodgkinson6965 I have tried tape in the past, and after the little lines are left, I smooth them down with my finder, and since the caulk was already tooled once and there is less on the wall at this point, the lines smooth down fairly straight and easy, but takes a lot of experience which I have, to pull that trick off, few swipes of the finger, and sometimes the edge of a wet rag. I have been gravitating to the Fugi tool more and more, and getting more comfortable using it than my finger. Only time I used tape recently was a friend was putting lipstick on a pig to sell his condo last week, did not want me to remove the old tub caulk, just caulk right over it! Only way to do that for him was tape it, glob it on thick, used my finger to tool it, peeled the tape. Looked thick but straight, and better than when we started, but still lipstick on a pig.

Being a heavy (330#) dude, I like my toilets rock solid. So I first squeeze a bead of "Durham's Rock Hard Water Putty" to fill all the gaps between the toilet and the floor. I push it deep to make space for the flexible silicone caulk. The end result is identical to this video but without any toilet movement at all. The Durham putty DOES NOT stick to the porcelain or tiles that hard so it will not make it difficult to remove the toilet later.

3 Questions: If you caulk around the toilet how or can you tell if your toilet is leaking (from the wax ring)?? Do you like the new waxless toilet rings? Does silicon caulking come in clear instead of white? Thanks for a great video!
@jeffostroff

I don't silicone all the way around, I leave the rear open so water can leak out if there is a leak. I prefer white silicone, but it comes in clear the other common color, and I have used almond on tile floors. I don't think clear would look good here. @@lindasegraves6207 Just so you know. Pros don’t not caulk toilets. The correct way is plaster. Nothing else adds stability and a spacer between the porcelain and tile. Minor loosening of the Floor bolts will happen with silicon as there is no base other than the wax. Which will begin to leak as a result of the toilet rocking, because of the loose bolts.

It all depends on how big or small you cut the tube tip, and how much caulk you put down. If you cut it too big and put too much, you’re screwed no matter what method you use. Finger works best for me, it’s just like cooking, you can always add to, but not take away when it’s too much. Same with cutting the tip of the tube, cut smaller and work your way up

Hi Jeff. There is a sewage smell from the toilet. And I can see the toilet base has improperly caulked at the base with floor: some segments of caulking is missing. Do you think the sewage smell would be released from the bad caulking? Or some internal parts of the toilet are not installed correctly? Thanks!
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 3 жыл бұрын
Oh this could be an unpleasant one lol. You need to really get on your knees there and find out where the smell is coming from is it coming from inside the toilet bowl itself from the water or is it coming from the bottom of the toilet where it meets the floor. If it is coming from near the floor then it means your wax ring has probably worn down and so sewer gases are finding a way to escape through whatever little space or cracks that it could find in the wax ring. All toilets by plumbing code have a trap that's built into it and if you look towards the back of the toilet you can actually see the shape of the trap in most toilets as it goes up and then turns around and goes back down that is what is supposed to trap a column of water inside the back of the toilet to prevent sewer gases from coming up so I really doubt they're coming up through the bowl . Also Are you sure it's coming up from the toilet? Did you check under your sink and see if your pee trap is OK there under the sink? Do you smell sewer gas is coming up through your drain in the sink? Those are other things to look at . also remember your shower is connected to the sewer.

I have always applied silicone tot he bottom of the toilet. But I leave the back open as I explained in this video. That's how you know there is a leak. If you don't apply silicone and people pee down the toilet and ontot he floor it can seep underneath, now it can smell.

I realized my toilet was leaking so I had everything changed including all the way to the cement and more. We changed the toilet and the new ring and all and as I was cleaning the floor I realized the bugs are back:(( they are very small and hard to see but they will grow and they will come back. I am devastated. I don't trust plumber can help me or he would have. this has been going on for 10 day period to get fixed between the tile worker and plumber, and now this... I am about to cry after spending so much money and I have to see these again. What do you think the problem is?? How can I get rid of the bugs or what is the problem??? Please help....:(((
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 3 жыл бұрын
If you are getting bugs and you can see if they are coming in from the bottom of the toilet, then it means your wax ring is not getting a good seal to the toilet flange, or there are holes in your pipe. I would need to see a video of what it looks like, but when you lift your toilet, the flange should be flush with the top of the tile, or slightly higher than the top of the tile floor, but not below the tile, or you'll not get a good seal. Also it's possible the bugs are coming in from somewhere else other than the 4" pipe going down tot he sewer.

Is caulking only enough to hold down the toilet?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 2 жыл бұрын
No you must use the Johnny bolts, the 2 bolts that tighten down the toilet to the flange. That must be rock solid tight before you apply the bead of 100% silicone. The silicone will be as strong as a 100 screws so together with the Johnny bolts, it should be rock solid.

Rather than worry about leaks from the toilet, I'd be more concerned about leaks from spills or from washing the floor that might flow under the toilet and then under the flange & soak the exposed wood under the tile. When that wood gets soaked it will warp and swell & then could throw the floor out of level or even crack the tile. So I'd want to caulk around the entire toilet, even the back.

If your toilet wobbles, you've either got an uneven floor or a badly-cast (made) toilet. If you're not fixing either, you WILL need to use plastic, toothed shims to secure it. I personally don't like to use caulk around the base of a toilet for two reasons. 1) It typically looks bad-- dirty and poorly applied. And 2) You want to be able to SEE quickly and EARLY any water leaking from a failed wax ring mount, not after days, say, of sitting on your expensive floors. Caulk at the base of your toilet where it meets the floor should NOT be your method of eliminating any wobble.
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 3 жыл бұрын
You are confusing caulk with silicone, caulk gets dry and cracks, and gets dirty. I use 100% pure white silicone, it is non porous and will not stain and will look perfect years down the road, as does mine at home. Second, I mentioned that you don't apply silicone to the back of the toilet so any water leaks will easily be spotted.

Although you don’t caulk a toilet in case the wax ring or flange has a issue and not just the back. If your toilet has that much of a gap it bothers you, let’s look at how the flange is installed. So there’s that….

A point i was going to make. Yes, the caulk can give it a cleaner look. But it will hide a failed wax seal. Which can cause more damage due to not being able to see the first issue. Seepage into wood subfloor below tile exc. And possible leaking into cavities and crawl space that can cause serious health issues if not caught. Good to see someone spoke facts on this one. Good looking out.
