Hey I’m a licensed plumber in IL. Anytime I set a toilet I caulk the front and the sides, but I don’t go all the way back. About the front 1/3. Keeps it from rocking and creating leaks and till allows water to escape if the wax ring fails. Best of both worlds
@KrazyKajun6023 ай бұрын
I repectively have to disagree. none of the videos mention the finish floor. If the floor is unlevel and tilts back to front or side to side, then the water will not run out of the back where there is no caulk.. same for when they are fixing or replacing the flange, I have yet to see a plumber with a level to check to make sure its level all the way around

Very helpful! By the way Humidity can cause water to form on the water reservoir tank and drip water on the floor giving a false (leaking) that's happened to me. Thanks again my friend.

I like the idea of leaving a gap round the back, but that leaves an exit/entrance for insects again. My suggestion is to lay a couple of plastic straws round the back, leaving them poking out a 1/4 of an inch.... and caulk them in. If the straws are thin enough to exclude bugs, it will still allow water out... The straws on WD 40 cans are nice and thin and strong

I have a friend who had a toilet that was not caulked. The tank to toilet seal seeped enough to just run down the toilet and under the base, rotting out the sub floor. He never saw the leak until it was too late because the water never pooled on the tile floor. I always caulk the toilet. The caulk adds a lot of stability to the toilet bowl, preventing movement that causes flange seal leaks.

if you have a toilet clog that overflows or if you have kids who piss and miss the bowl, all that liquid goes underneath the toilet and will smell. i caulk all the way but leave a small gap in the back in case there is a leak in the wax ring.

Serious question: if you leave an inch without caulk in the back, what keeps the bugs from entering under toilet through the uncaulked gap? Am I'm missing something.? Thx
@FixThisHouse Жыл бұрын
That’s a great question! It minimizes insect traffic. You can also apply a bug repellent gel on the 1” gap entry 👍🏽😊

Lexel is the greatest product to use for caulking around the toilet. In addition to toddlers missing the toilet, older people with dementia miss the toilet when urinating quite often.

Hi, I just moved into a duplex. The basement has 2 bedrooms, the bathroom and part of the basement with the Oil Tank, Hot Water Heater, and Furnace as well as the Washer, Dryer and Deep Freeze. Upon moving in, I noticed that there was 0 ZERO caulking in the bathroom!!!!!!!! None around the toilet, the tub, the baseboards...no caulking anywhere in the bathroom...not even in the shower. I've mentioned this during Inspection and told they don't do that.... same with the kitchen, no caulking. We are now seeing more critters in the basement all rooms, walking up to get to the second set of stairs no caulking in the entry way...so ants literally walk right in. Same with the upstairs. No caulking in the kitchen around the sink or the floor. I'm so happy to have found your KZbin channel. Something I can show next time they come. I've a question for you, I can't remove the rubber plastic on the stairs, but I need to do something with them. They are swept and a few hours later look awful. I was wanting to put down the plastic peel laminate I've seen at the hardware stores but have been on the Internet and Pinterest looking for ideas. It attracts everything, hair, wooly balls, if it's on the floor it's on my stairs, no matter how many times I sweep or use a dryer sheet after cleaning baseboards I can get 3 months before having to wash them...but does nothing for the stairs. I have extreme limited mobility, but I cannot look at the stairs any longer. The entire stair is covered and there are 6 going upstairs to the main level, kitchen, living room and 2 bedrooms. Another 6 going down to the basement. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you could explain why caulking is needed in the bathroom, I can show it to the Inspector. My oldest has seen silverfish, ants and spiders in his room, my youngest ants and spiders and I've only seen ants in the bathroom. When I was younger my Grandad worked for a Plumbing and Heating company and when my mom and stepdad bought a house, my grandad went right to work fixing everything he saw wrong.... caulking was on the list. Our last place the caulking turned moldy, so I tore it all out and did it myself, there was a window in the shower big enough to crawl out and it had ZERO caulking around the window. It was gross, and I just noticed that the floor in the bathroom has changed colors and I'm guessing mold. Mold is in my youngest's room.... new pillow and was on the floor, he thought it was the rain, but I had my window open and no issues. We lost a lot of our belongings in the old house because of mold and the Rental Company was aware and did nothing. Brand new bed for my daughter when I was working, I bought all new beds for the kids, but a driver who was high rearended me on my way home from work, I can never work again and I'm just in my 40's. They wouldn't replace the bed, even though I had lost bookshelves, dressers, clothes, pictures, stuffed animals from kids being little. I'm beyond stressed and a small town I can't just ask around you can get evicted pretty easy. Sorry for the long post but you're the only other person I have found that talks about caulking. Off to check out the rest of your channel. Thank you for taking the time to read, this is my oldest account. My Gmail keeps getting hacked.... but I'm on KZbin all the time so I'll check back every once in a while. Hope you're having a great summer.

If you search for "importance of caulking" or something similar, one of the first sites listed is the US Dept of Energy. You could also look up your city/county/state building code inspection departments and they should have resources for you. Between caulking the inside and using a barrier spray outside, that should eliminate unwanted insects. If by chance your housing is even partially government funded, they can be reported to the housing authority. FYI, when any of your accounts get breached, you need to change your password ASAP. This is especially important if you use the same password somewhere else online, as that other account will be vulnerable until both are updated. Hang in there and keep advocating for yourself! You've got this!

Set the toilet on a few pop cycle sticks and caulk under it. Tighten the bolts down the next day. The wax ring doesn't seal if the toilet rocks.

Thoroughly confused.... when it comes to a house being on a concrete slab... and someone caulks around the toilet...if a leak does develop or the seal is broken..... what exactly happens? I mean, it's concrete

Use Grout. on any floor. The grout will seal the same way BUT grout will support the toilet all the way around and the toilet will NEVER rock back and forth. Even your big aunt can plop down on it after thanksgiving dinner and it wont budge. USE GROUT. = Dry time 24 hours. Hold time = longer than the toilets life.

if you leave a gap, the bugs will find it. why don’t toilets have a built-in gasket that doesn’t show? it would also help balance a toilet on an uneven floor

No never caulk the toilet and if you think about it you’ll probably agree 😊. If the toilet seal is properly installed it will never leak and if it isn’t you’ll want to know so you can remove toilet and repair. If the base of toilet is caulked and your seal is improperly installed you’ll have a puddle of water inside the circumference of the base that will rot your floor 😮. Is that what you want?😅.

Another disadvantage: What if the toilet needs to be lifted for a bad clog? I had this happen to me (kids) recently. Despite that I’d also caulk if there was any gaps - assuming the wax ring seal is properly fitted / seated.

I do NOT caulk and the argument for the inch gap for a water release area...If it's in the back it could take days or weeks before the water builds up around the toilet before the water fills all the voids before it reaches the back of the toilet, gross!
