To void damage you can also wrap the splines in 4 layers of cardboard and use vice grips with low pressure.

I found if the revolutions are say 3, you'll need to turn 1.5 turns which will bring the shaft mark opposite & away from your 2 markers. A direct opposite being halfway on the markers

I just use a tape measure and measure the length from the clamp on the bellow holding it to the rack to the end of the inner tie-rod and make each side identical and your done...

Just for reference, what would be the effect of having this not centered? My steering is slightly stiff and will walk its way to the right when driving at full speed. New arms, bushings, and struts. Pump is also new.

If you were off one full turn you might break the Air Bag clock spring when you turn the steering wheel all the way. That is if the steering shaft was removed with the rack centered.

At the end, why do you continue rotating the shaft between the two marks? It’s like instead of one rotation to center it, you added another 1/8 of a turn.

I've literally never seen a steering gear that didn't come centered lol just lock your steering wheel prior to removal and the key way always lines up measure your tie rod ends than perform an alignment..

I've had way too many people come in for alignments after a rack and pinion. They never keep the steering wheel locked. Or just move the rack and not realize.

So question for anyone, I got a 09 mustang. About 2 years ago I had the steering rack replaced with a new one. But the thing is just a couple weeks ago I started to hear a noise like if something is loose every time I move the steering wheel.(also sounds like a thump at times) Any help?

Install tie rods same number of turns and put the wheels on and straight. If you didn't move the steering wheel it should be spot on
