I used to take like 2-3 hours to change a tire (specially the rear) because I was doing it *very* wrong. This time I did it along watching the video. Literally 20 minutes and I was done, no joke. Oh, and I used a big cardboard box instead of a proper tire stand. Never thought changing a tire could be so easy. Thanks for the video!

The most important part of all of this is to take your time and go easy. Make sure when you start you have an hour or two. If you run out of time leave it for later. I’ve done 15 or 16 of them over the last 10 years or so. Pinched 2 tubes and both times I was in a hurry and not paying attention. Best advice is to put a little air in the tube. Just enough for the tube to hold its shape. I’ve never pinched a tube that had a little air in it. This video is exactly the way I’ve always done it. Once you get the wheel inside of the tire it pops right out.

Great advice. Patience is the key. When you see these videos knocking them out in 10 minutes, it could warp your perspective. Unless you've changed as many tires as they have, it will NOT be fast. Take your time, don't rush, and know that it will probably take you a while. Like an hour or two, or more. And if you have to walk away, walk away. Keep your body comfortable and cool, and if you have to continue tomorrow, so be it. Great advice hoffmanshaven.

Big help. I will be changing my very first tire using this method and yes....I ordered the tire and heavy duty tube from Rocky Mountain! :) Edit: So I changed the front tire of my Honda crf300l today in 45 minutes flat after watching this video and taking a few notes. There were a few small details which I missed but it got done and I was thrilled with the results. It was my first tire change ever! Thank you Rocky Mountain! BTW I will be purchasing that long curved iron. I now see and understand it's value. :)

I just did my first ever tire change on my 300l today (front)! Unfortunately I didn't watch this first and had some difficulty but got it done. I used a heavy duty tube that had two nuts and a metal shoulder on valve, I guessed that shoulder and one nut goes inside rim and the other goes on outside of rim , I couldn't find any info on this. Anyway I will balance tomorrow and tackle the rear. Went with the Pirelli Rally Cross on front and have the Dunlop 606 for rear. Also added rim locks

Tips- let the tires sit in the sun a bit so they are soft. Cold tires are hard and not fun to work with. Windex also works for tire lube. When installing tube tube, inflate until your finger barley puts a crease in it when hanging. I place a trash bag with a bottle of baby powder dumped in it into a bucket and shake it. Helps powder the tube.

Fantastic video showing how to correctly change a tire (OR tube...) on a dirt bike.... When all else fails, a good size bucket works as a stand... And my personal preference for lube is a nice water/soap mixture... One of the main things that many people may overlook is the actual spoons that are used. Screwdrivers may work trailside, but if you purchase a good set of spoons it makes this 100% easier :)

newbie here with a question for ya'll, the final step is to snug the valve nut up against the valve cap, is this correct that the valve nut doesnt get tightened against the rim? thanks in advance for the help!
@koyaan1sqatsi3 жыл бұрын
Ya, I just learned in the last 48 hours (after 20 years of riding) that the nut is not supposed to tighten against the rim, but rather against the cap, to keep it tight. Tightening the nut to the rim increases the chance of the tube ripping at the valve stem. You'd think this would be more readily available info. ;)

I also use baby powder on the tube, and inside of the tire, to help the tube move around and take it's shape while inflating. That way it doesn't roll over on itself and possible pinch flat. If you get a nail in your tire and have to change the tube, do you also have to repair the hole on the tire as well with those tire plugs - like those they use for tubeless tires? And if so, at what point to you do that - before or after the tube change? is it better to use the bacon strips kind of plug or the slime?

@20Ian Jury Did you use a set of screw drivers, forget to apply baby powder to the tube, forgot to partially inflate the tube, did not lube up the walls of the tire, or failed to look where the tire iron was seating the bead of the tire causing a ripped tube? Get the right tire irons, bead tool, partially inflate and baby powder the tube (get a Ultra Heavy Duty tube for beginners), and avoid touching the tube, should be pretty easy under 45 min.

People who know how to do this make it look so easy. Without experience, trust me, it's NO JOKE. The first tires I replaced were PW50 tires. I almost cried, destroyed the old tire, and started to bend the rim. That was without tire irons, and destroyed almost every screwdriver that I had. That was without any video tutorials, but I BARELY got it done. The next was front and rear on a KX85 after watching a few tutorial videos, like this one. I didn't almost cry, but I did sweat like a SOB, and boy was I tired. I'm psyching myself up to tackle front and rear on a 2002 XR250R. Let's see how this goes. I know it will NOT be easy, but I feel confident that I will get the job done. I've got a little experience, 4 tire irons, and even more tire replacement videos watched.

So i bought your spoons and a Shinko 804 for my DR650, everything went smooth and fairly quick, with a heavy duty IRC tube. But seemed like about a 5 inch spot wasn't fully seating when i inflated it, that line on tire was giving me a hard time popping out. i deflated several times and finally ok, never heard that pop when inlflating though, would you have a words of wisdom on this? thanks
@rmatvmc6 жыл бұрын
*Double x* - Did you tighten your rim lock down before inflating? That usually will cause the 5 inches you're seeing to not seat. If that wasn't the case, what you ended up doing would be the way to fix it by deflating the tube again and maybe even applying more tire lube to the 5" area and then reinflate. Many times I seem to get a bulge in the sidewall of a freshly mounted tire right at the valve stem. This makes for a lump as the tire goes around. Does anybody know how to prevent that and once it's there how to get rid of it? It seems to happen often on soft carcass tires such as shinko 241 and others. Thanks
@rmatvmc Жыл бұрын
The sidewall? Hmm, this could be entirely different than what you are thinking but... Sometimes the tube gets hung up on the bead by the valve stem. When mounting, put the valve stem nut on a couple of threads and make sure you can push the stem in. If it doesn't push in, it's hung up so pull the bead back with the spoons then push it in. -Charles
