Thanks Jim changed ATF and filter Saturday on my s max 2010 I used Ford BO DC Transmission oil and filter. Made a difference and was as simple as an engine oil filter change. Top marks for your video thanks again.

You are supposed to yes. Skipping that step results in a slightly under-filled box. Maybe not enough to cause problems, but this box really doesn't need any help to break itself! Literally 10 minutes extra to do it properly and top up again after the run-through of the gears!

Nice video Jim, you make it look pretty simple. 2 questions. 1/. Can you recommend an alternative oil to the Ford labelled one as it's pretty expensive. 2/. It looks like to only levelled the oil once. Is this because you trimmed the video showing repeated filling and levelling as shown by others showing similar surface. Or is I nice enough. Seems sensible that once should be enough.

I dont know about any other oils sorry I only use the castrol recommended one, and officially you check the level twice, but I know alot of people who just put 6 litres in and leave it and have never had any problems👍

Hi, superb video! very clear instructions, seems a straight forward procedure! I have the 2016 (66 plate) can you tell me if it is the same procedure? Can you tell me what can cause a small oil leak from the auto transmission box area? could this be a gasket problem? I was quoted £550 by Ford service garage!!

Thanks! Its the same for all the powershift boxes, most common leaks normally come from the Auto fluid pan (the black one) they sometimes warp slightly causing the gasket to leak just change the pan and gasket and problem solved- if its that, youll obviously have to take a look for where its coming from 👍

I've realised, luckily before I started the job, that all 4 wheels need to be jacked up off the ground with my 2016 Titanium (A4WD), then put the gear selector to the 'S' position, ie. 'Select' 'Sport', to be able to work through the gears after initial fill up with new fluid.

Just done the fluid change, very straight forward since seeing your vid. No leak, just traces of WD40 that I had sprayed over any exposed bolt heads about a month ago, this must've confused the highly skilled technicians at the ford garage!!! (frightening is'nt it).

I asked ford and they said my car has closed unit and it doesnt need fluid changing but I am having issue with car sometime not engaging for 6-7 seconds or not picking up speed after the shift. I have done that before on bad ones not sure if it made any difference but it wont hurt doing it, if it was black id probably do it again sooner than the recommended next change too 👍

This was a brilliant video thanks, planning on doing my car this weekend. One question regarding the oil level. Other procedures I've seen and read state to open the level plug and wait for it to drip. Then fill more fluid until the oil coming out of the level plug streams again. That's when the level is apparently correct. But you seem to have removed the level plug for a few seconds and then put it back without refilling. Can you explain what the difference is? Thanks!

Thanks for commenting! This is the ford way of doing things, the reason is because there are two chambers to the box and if you do it the way I do it 100% fills both chambers fully, if you do it the way you described theres a chance the front chamber wont fully fill which would end up causing shifting problems. Thats what ford claim anyway Hope that answers your question 👍

Do you have a source for the information from ford that says to plug it back up when it’s flowing instead of dripping. This is the first I’ve heard about the different chambers to fill and I’m interesting in learning more about it.

Normally not in my experience, change it and the filter straight away then clear the fault codes incase your one of the lucky ones but normally ive found once they get to that stage the transmissions scrap

Shouldnt you let the oil drain untill it stops when you remove the oil level check plug? Thats what vw dsgs do, they drain untill the correct level then drip

Miso Drobny you can do it if you want, but to be honest the oil is expensive so i never have done, all the powershifts take around 6 litres 👍

Yeah i think thats more the way ive edited the video tbh, when checking the level after replacing the fluid put the plug back in once it starts to tail off and come out as a thin stream you dont have to wait till it stops running completely aslong as its not streaming / pouring out, make sure the car is on a flat level surface though or you wont get an accurate level, hope that helps 👍

Marc De Almeida ah i see, No thats a lie, just make sure once done you hold your foot on the brake pedal with handbrake on and go through the gears without acceleration lift your foot off brake slightly so it selects each gear (Park, neutral, reverse etc) do that twice up and down just to make sure the oil goes round the gears and it selects them. But in short No theres no programming needed at all 👍

short term but on the volvo same dct450 box its recommended under vida so it doesnt throw up an error - reset fluid counter its called - also resetting adaptions on any dct box is also recommended by those who specialise in this area of dual clutch gearboxes - there complex

Matthew Lawrence always genuine ford these boxes are so temperamental, i do believe it is FORD BO-DC transmission oil with part no: 1490763 Its fairly pricey oil per litre but if it saves your gearbox going bang cant complain! Hope that helps 👍

yes i think your talking about resetting the oil counter so the box knows that its got new replaced oil in it. you have to do that on the volvo with the same box - recommended so it doesnt throw up a false error if you dont

Twig its part of the official ford procedure, basically theres two chambers inside the gearbox and when you fill it the first chamber gets filled to the absolute max but the second not so much so you run through the gears so that the oil goes into the second chamber, then take the oil level plug out the second time to let out the excess oil. If there is excess oil, why put 6lires in? Why not 5, 3/4 litres. Not getting at you on the comment, it just seems an odd thing that Ford have recommended doing. Unless it is to prove that you have put enough in, so they can't have any claims against them for insufficient oil.

You just open it after putting 6litres in and running through the gears like in video and then switch off and simply open it to allow it to drain to correct level. It's important obviously to have the vehicle level. If nothing comes out (it should if 6litres went in) then top up and run through the gears and open plug again until it comes out, that way you know it's at its correct capacity..

The procedure you showed is incorrect! You forgot about refilling the gearbox again to the proper level. There are 2 chambers in the gearbox.
