Great video!! Thank you. I just replaced my front driver side bearing/hub on my 2008 Prius, 178,000 miles (original owner) without much difficulties. The notch on the center axle nut needs to be bent back prior to unscrew it otherwise you will damage it!!! I took the knuckle/hub assembly to a local Napa automotive store and had them press the hub out without any problems ($20 fee, well worth it :-)). The airplane departing "noise" from the front left hub is totally gone after replacing the bearing/hub. This Prius is really trouble free for us, except pumping fuel, replacing two set of tires twice, regular oil changes, one ATF change, one coolant change and one set of spark plugs. I am still getting over 50mpg overall on this car. All our current cars are Toyota hybrid, two Prius (2008 and 2017) and one Camry hybrid (2020).

2023 and your video has saved my bacon for a 3rd time. This time I bought an expensive wheel bearing and I’m hoping to get more than 3 or 4 years out of it. Many thanks guys, many thanks 🙏🏻

I did it! Thanks for the video. Mine went 180,000 on the originals. The rears went at 150,000. I was able to pull the hub with 15 hits of a small sledge hammer. I clamped 3 pipe clamps (for woodworking) in the knuckle. The 3 chunks of pipe was enough mass to help stabilize the knuckle. Then I help a sledge over the hub bearing, slapping it with another hammer.

Jeff Wallace Hey Thank You for the Feedback!, That’s Great!!! Always happy to know my Vlog helped you out!! You’re welcome!! 180k and the rear 150k in the rears wow!!, that’s like literally unheard off!! You must live far away from a salty ocean and the winter weather “No Rust States”?!? Up here in New England having all season including Winter and being really close to the ocean plays a huge role in UnderCarriages getting excessively Rusty and making much more difficult on Dismantling!! And Hammering our Bolts, Rotors, and everything els in between haha Thanks Again Jeff for the Info and Support to the Channel 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I’ll be replacing my passenger side wheel bearing on my 2008 base Prius, 258,000 miles. I’ve owned this car since 2012, second owner. The thing is bullet proof and seems hard to kill. Replaced original plugs at 225,000 and was still getting 46mpg, replaced serpentine belt at that time also and found no cracks in it... best little car I’ve ever owned. We now have 7 Prius in our extended family!

Pretty smooth goin until the wheel bearing. I decided to change everything and it was a SOB! I had 3 hours in getting the joint nuts off, an hour getting the inner and outer separated, and around another 4 getting the bearing out. I was going to do the other side but I think I'm going to hit a bridge instead. Worst repair job I ever undertook. Best wishes and thanks for the video you guys!

aluminum doesnt rust. what you have there is galvanic corrosion. its what happens when two disimilar metal come into contact. the aluminum has its own natural protection to this, but its negated when its outer layer is scratched exposing fresh metal and then coming into contact with steel.

A friend gave me a 2008 Prius with 300 k miles, I will replace this bearings by myself, this car is awesome, but I used to hated it before drive it. I wish I can buy one with fewer mileage. This car is so cool, no alternator, no starter, maybe no AC compressor, with a power converter you have a mobile powerful electricity generator.

Guys, quick question.... the bolt that you are working on at 30:46, the one on the end of the tie rod. That nut & thread spun on me like, I had to put tension on it (with a floor jack) to get it thread & not just spin while the nut was only half way on. Is that a problem? I did get it to tighten back to its original spot, but i was freaked out when the nut started turning the threaded end. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. also thanks so much for this video !!

Bradyn Austin Hey, Thanks for your feedback! Oh the last bolt we tightened, if you were able to catch it; we had a wrench on the bottom of the bolt and tightened the top but with the Torque Gun. (Because if not it will spin together). Nothing wrong with having a local shop double check it for safety purposes of course! However it sounds like you did a great job!! Now if you’re talking about the nut at the inner end of the tie rod that could be part of your alignment, so if your cars pulls or drives funny I do suggest having your alignment re adjusted! You’re welcome for the video, and thanks again! Please Drop a LIKE SUBB if we were able to help!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Bradyn Austin sorry just realized I had a typo. I had responded with Oh the last bolt we tightened, if you were able to catch it; we had a wrench on the bottom of the bolt and tightened the top but with the Torque Gun. (Because if not it will spin together). What I meant to say we had applied pressure with our Hand pushing upward on the bottom of the tie rod and tightened the top nut with the Torque Gun. ( because it not it will spin together) so yes you having to use a jack was fine. Now I will still double check the tie rod to make sure yours is A Ok! because if you had to apply a lot of pressure, you want to make sure that tie rod is in working condition and doesn’t need to be replaced.

Wondering from anyone here about whether you think my bearing is the issue. Once car is driven about 6 miles it makes a squeaking noise when I turn right on city streets. It disappears after five seconds or less after driving straight. Usually happens after braking and then turning to the right. Doesn’t happen first thing in the morning when car is cold until I’ve gone about 6 miles on city street.

Hey Ronrupke6386 Thank you for your Feedback. (Unfortunately I don’t have your vehicle in my shop), so I will start off with the basics, I Will Share Some Tips & Tricks. A clear indication that a Wheel Bearing needs to be changed will be as follows Beginning stages; You will hear a light Humming and or Growling sounds at “Highway Speeds” at or Greater than 55Mph. And or turning on and off exits you’ll also hear a “Woo woo woo woo woo woo woo” Turning to the right can indicate it’s your right wheel bearing. Turning to the left can indicate your left wheel bearing. Intermediate Stage; You will hear a Growling at inner “City Speeds” at or Greater than 30mph Turning not so much. Bad Stage; You will hear a Deep Growling “Practically any Speeds” at or Greater than 10Mph If you safely raise your vehicle on a lift and spin each wheel, the Best you can physically; -you want to hear a distinct growling as well.”just to narrow down the bad wheel bearing. Now this Ghost Squeak -squeaking coming and going, when turning right on city streets and then disappearing on low speed in a straight travel. Diagnose the following: Sounds like suspension links Inner Tie Rod Outer Tie Rod Upper Control Arm Lower Control Arm I’ll go on a limb a say to double check Front Brakes and rotors and or calipers Alignment (if your also pulls either direction) So it can be one or a number of those I just named. Easiest thing for you to do, Go to a local mechanic and have them do a full inspection of the parts I mentioned, it will rule them out and it should be Free inspection or $25 at the most. Good Luck & Thanks again, if my Vlog helped you out please Drop a LIKE 👍🏻 👍🏻 & SUBB

Les Forster Thanks for your feedback Happy to hear our video helped you out! However with the torque spec can be found on google Toyota Prius front wheel bearing torque specs. We assume ZERO. Liability with your torque specification so I found this for you From Toyota Manufacturers Wheel Bearing Torque Spec 15 to 20 ft. lbs. If doing it your self; with no more than 15 to 20 ft. lbs. of torque while rotating the wheel to make sure the bearings are seated. The adjustment nut is then loosened 1/6 to 1/4 turn, and locked in place with a new cotter pin. Thanks Again and Good Luck 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Knight D. Hey Knight. Total cost was About $320.00. (Part Included) We used a DealerShip Bearing, which means the price was on the highest side. However Depending on every individuals budget a bearing brand they can also be found on EBay Between $35.00 $120.00 for the Part. As for the Prius we repaired, It’s going Strong, great steering, very quite and no more roaring sounds. Dealerships will be the most expensive route however it’s both guaranteed and and comes with a manufacturers warranty!!! Thanks again for your feedback, Please leave a LIKE & SUBB!!

Ryan Lee thanks for your FeedBack. In mechanics there are steps and choices including brute Force that we have to make at moments notice. We live next to the Salt Water ocean and have Tons of Harsh Salt, Sand, & Ice Melt all Winter Long that reeks havoc on Metal including our undercarriage thennnnnn Comes our nemesis Mr Rust. In warmer climates there will be less of it, and making it easier to remove parts, however it’s like 2nd nature Here in NewEngland. Hammering is necessary to get the pats loose. (Which can be dangerous for both us and the vehicle’s, there are stress points located on every car where hammering is safe to the vehicle and well, we do our best to keep our selves safe too) There is also heating up of the Stuck/Jammed parts but is more risky, heat can warp Metals and can travel and damage aluminum or even cause brake hoses and plastics to catch fire. Thank you for you Concern and always thanks for your support!! We do our best to have Entertaining, interactive, Informative & How To : Vlogs coming for our Codes and Coffee Family who come to watch leave advise and learn!!
