A real life job not some mocked up workbench experience.
A modern slightly larger convector single radiator or better still a double panel convector radiator will warm your room a lot more than an old single panel ,and even more so if it is an old cast iron one.
Keep warm and save money double your heat output for the same cost as heating an old single panel iron radiator.

Al. I changed a rusty rad for a nice shiny new Kudox single convector in the spare bedroom. After draining the old rad and preparing the new one I was good to go. I was fortunate that I did not have to cut any pipework. Like you I also managed to get the old tails off and reuse on the new one. The width of the Kudoc was slightly smaller than the original and I didn't need to use an extention valve as I first thought. I had to higher the brackets slightly to lineup with the pipe valves. After applying fernox white boss compound and tightening up. It was all good with no leaks at all. As I say I think I struck lucky with the width and lineing up of the pipe valves. The bottom line is. I was able to stand back and admire my nice new gleaming white radiator. No more brown rust line running down from the bleed valve!

I would not do the jobs you show how to do, I am way too rubbish at DIY but knowing how it should be done is a big advantage when I am dealing with trades, it gives me peace of mind, so thanks very much for the education, it is very valuable!

Hello benny that spanner is a cheap £5.00 spanner from any pound type shop , market tool stalls often have them . I have to say that because of it`s short length it is one of the best spanners I have in the tool box.

I did recently fit a TRV and unlike yours, the spigot only had a thread, the chrome pipe and a nut to fit the pipe, it made tightening the spigot difficult as there was nothing on it for a spanner. The only fittings that have leaked in my house are the soldered joints that a professional plumber put in I replaced them with compression fittings and they have not leaked in the last 20 years. I do use Kutalite or Conex not the cheap chinese ones. I have never used pfte tape or boss white on any compression or tapered thread. Thanks for the video.

Once again, you've made it look simple..ish. Modern houses seem to use the white flexible snap-lock hoses. Just curious: is it not normal practice to insert a rubber 'sleeve' around the heated copper pipe to allow movement against the floor boards?
@dereton33
@dereton33 10 жыл бұрын
Hi exwhyz23 . no I have never done that . the hole is always just a bit larger than the diameter of the pipe passing through it . So there is always plenty of room for movement. Kind regards, al.

None of my rads have a drain, but there is one on the heating pipes by the downstairs loo so I assume it's OK to use that - is that so it can be drained into the loo? Even though the loo itself is higher than the pipes?

I replaced a four element twin air outlet aluminium ROCA radiator with a 12 element four air outlet one in the bathroom . The benefit was unbelievable .I reduced the boiler central heating temperature by 10c and it still heats the bathroom in 1/2 hour .and my gas bill has come down .

How would you handle the pipes that come from behind the radiator from the walls. Do you have a video that shows how to replace a small radiator with a larger one where the pipe comes from behind the radiator?

Besides a visual preference could additional pipes be added to the left hand side to extend it from underneath the radiator but above the floor rather than cut it beneath the flooring and having to put another hole in the floor?

Hi Al. Thanks for the great videos mate. I've learned so much from these and I'm now doing jobs in the house I wouldn't have dreamed of tackling before. I have a question for you. I just changed a radiator in the hallway from a type 11 to a type 21 (Kudos from Screwfix). The new one is not as wide as the old one so I'm using some Radiator Union Valve Tails to bridge the gap at either end on the feed and return. The problem I have is that the type 21 sits off the wall a bit further than the type 11 did, so the valve tails don't line up (they're out by about 10mm. What's the best way to make them align? Is it ok to bend the the existing pipework forward (ie away from the wall) that 10mm distance? Thanks again. You're advice is much appreciated by me.
@dereton33
@dereton33 8 жыл бұрын
Yes I always pull them forward, otherwise you will have to drain the system, cut the pipe tails low to the floor, put on a coupling and renew the rad tail putting a small 10 mm set into them with a bending machine, then refill adding more inhibitor as that would have been drained out. All this extra work, for the sake of pulling them forward.

What would be the case if the pipe ends are delivered from the side wall instead of the floor ? Is it possible to add 90 deg elbows each end, then loop around with u bends to connect up to the radiator ? Or Do you have to cut the existing pipes from the wall re-insert to the extended radiator lengths ? Hope this is understood your end. Thanks.
@dereton33
@dereton33 7 жыл бұрын
Best not to have too many bends all though you can connect it that way.

Hello, Al. I need to replace my single panel radiator in my hallway, same place as my thermostat. Can I replace it with a double panel radiator. 1 ) Will my boiler be able to cope with the extra heat output?. 2 ) Do i need to alter the balance on the new radiator ( less turns on the valve )?. 3 ) Can i fit a TRV or does this affect the thermostat ?. Thanks in advance.
@dereton33
@dereton33 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, your boiler will cope OK, I would turn the lock shield valve down to just 1 turn, you can still fit a TRV valve, it will however, shut off when it reaches temperature, which might make your hallway cold and force the thermostat to call for heat.

hi im swapping same size single type 11 radiator with double type22 ...will i have to adjust the pipes ? it may not be a direct perfect swap? .... Also will a double22 radiator cause big increase in my gas bill?
@dereton33
@dereton33 5 жыл бұрын
The same size will fit but you may have to pull the pipes forward to fit as the rad will be wider. Your gas bill will not increase.

Just shut both valves off it will still be isolated. If you use a Steelrad the tappings can be either side or both sides like yours.

While I think your videos are good - this one has cut far too short the last stage of joining and extending the pipe. This is the most difficult part and it just appeared - as if by magic! Not good in a "How to..." video..

And now my central heating of the whole house doesn't work thank you for misleading me.
