Notice how the camera cuts off when he begins "tapping" the old ball joint out of the knuckle. Thats the hardest part. Mine it so stuck in there I swear you need a press for this job.

Getting the old balljoint unstuck from the knuckle is the hard part, the one they cut out :D

Another video that is a GROSS OVERSIMPLIFICATION of the process. There is a GOOD reason why they show him wailing on the ball joint with his hammer and then cut away to him putting the old one on his bench and picking up the new one. Because there was A LOT of grief before that cutaway. What a joke.

Thank you for your feedback! It is rather funny and practical joke. Sometimes there can be difficulties in replacement for some cars and technical conditions of their units. Best regards, Autodoc,

So ur telling me ur gonna sit behind ur dumb screen and watch the let's say it took him an hour or 30 mins of him trying to take it out ur gonna sit there and watch all the struggle? Get off ur high horse u troll u dont want to do the job ur self then take it to a shop
@michaelhornbuckle2834 жыл бұрын
But him showing that it takes a hammer to get it off kind of gives you an idea that is not pressed on at least. All what it took me was a straight edge screwdriver and a hammer and chisel turn the wheel to the left and hit the ball joint on top with the Chisel knocking it out. Wouldn't hurt to spray a little WD-40 as you're doing it.

There’s no way you got it off with that little tap. Been hitting mine for 4 hours and no budge
@nicks75483 жыл бұрын
I used 3 small sharp flat head screw drivers. After the screw drivers were evenly under the ball joint I used a cold chisel and banged the area near the holes are side to side to get it moving. Then hammering the screwdrivers in more and more. I Use heat and definitely helps, I made a metal heat shield for the cv boot. Be careful not to mess up the threaded areas on the spindle or torx screws will give you problems. I Live in the rust belt, replaced everything on my x3 and it fought me every step of the way. Good video man but you know that it didn’t come out that easy. Stop the bs.

What should the balljoint nut be tightened up to? Looking at the video, it looks like 7-8 dak daks?

You can find this information in the technical documentation for repairing your car.

If only it were this easy, and maybe, for some, it is. Just did mine on my 2002 X4 with just under 92,000 miles on it. The driver side was siezed up bad. After pounding for over an hour, using a cold chisel and an old USA made flat blad screw driver, I took a rest. Hit with lots of PB Blaster, and went to bed. The next morning, I pounded away some more. Then, I took the brake rotor off, so that I could access the outer side of the balljoint. The stupid brake dust shield wont fully come off, but I was able to rotate it out of the way, so I could chisel away at the other side. I finally got some minor seperation on both sides. I loosely bolted up the control arm, then beat on the arm, and balljoint finally came out. For the passenger side, I ordered the balljoint removal tool on ebay.

Thanks for your video. Very helpful. By the way, I have a 2011 BMW X5 E70. Some manual says 65 Nm or 48 ft-lb but your'e saying, it is 100Nm or 74 ft-lb. Where did you get your torque rating?

honestly, iva taken the whole assembly off and after seeing the condition of the balljoint. Im just buying a brand new knuckle, hub and balljoint. Probs cheaper than spending all day fighting it. Also my lower balljoint is held in with female torx nuts and so im 10000% going to end up stripping that and i just cant be arsed. if it was a male ended bolt as seen in this ide just get an impact on it.

Autodoc makes great videos but this one is not good. Everyone knows how to get to the ball joint. The hard part is removing it. Which autodoc does not show. Make a new video, & show HOW you removed the ball joint. Thanks.

Thank you for your feedback! You are absolutely right - sometimes it's rather difficult to take off this ball joint and it takes a lot of efforts. To facilitate this work we recommend that you use a special tool for removing it, you can find it on our wesite, the article number V3308 VIGOR. Best regards, Autodoc.

I thought this job was easy based on watching the video. NOPE! Apparently, you need a ball joint removal / install tool and requires you to remove the driveshaft. Now I'm stuck in my driveway needing to borrow a vehicle to get the proper tools to do this PROPERLY!

I agree with the sentiment, looks are deceiving as well the simplicity of removing the ball-joint. Thanks for making the average guy think it can be completed within 30 minutes combined (both sides). Misleading representation and time. 3 thumbs down
