Thanks. I did my Ram. Used a cheap fluid pump down the dipstick tube and removed a good amount of the pan fluid. Less mess. Installed a drain plug for future spill fill and filter services.

i used a little Bluetooth scanner from Amazon. I think you might need an actual decent scanner. personally, as long as you put the same amount back in your good. I called 2 different shops and they told me they don't even scan the fluid temp. SUVs been running great.

I bought a small pump and pulled most of the oil out trough the dip stick filler tube , then there was way less oil in the pan to mess with , I also used an empty oil jug from a previous oil change because it has fluid markings on the side, easy to measure the fluid. Cheers

I believe the 2010 Patriot takes up to 7 quarts. Plus it's a good idea to change fluid in the **transfer case & the **rear differential. ** = vehicles with 4WD. I used my engine oil dipstick to get the trans fluid level mark (Engine off, when it's cold & on level ground.) I ended up getting a dipstick from an auto salvage yard & trimmed the end of it off so it fits into the pan, which gave me the same reading as when I used my engine dipstick..

@@GilbertGardens The CVT Transaxle ''Filler Tube'' is up on the front of the trans. So mine is really easy. I believe some Jeep lines like the Liberty, from like 05-0? take a longer dipstick. There's just something about those 1-dipstick fits all vehicles, I don't like.

Thanks for the details. Bought my son a 2011 that has been ignored some. Did an oil change…trans fluids up next. Gonna swap the pan too for an aftermarket one with a drain plug. The only other issue is I need to replace the filler tube because it is broken off. Have all the parts coming and am hoping to have it done this weekend.

The 2012 has a drain plug makes it much easier. It’s not difficult to drain normally. Just loosen one end and work your way back and leave the bolts on the more square end and gradually loosen them until it’s empty.

2007 has a larger housing and makes it very tough to get to bottom screws. use glue or tape on the screws otherwse you'll be fishing them out forever. use a 10 mm with 1/4 inch drive extension

When you’re having an issue with the gasket staying in place put a few dabs of grease in random spots around the lip, that will hold the gasket in place. The manufacturer says no gasket sealer.

@@GilbertGardens I can't find one of my reply/comment. I'm gonna look for one of those 2' x 4' x 4'' lip - Orange kids Sleds as an extra Trans Fluid catcher. I'll just put that 2 or 3 gallon Motor Oil storage container that ya use when changing motor oil, on top of that sled. Key is to change the CVT Trans Fluid with all the previous waste motor oil emptied out. Then whatever drains out of it, meaning ''The Trans'' when I change those 2 filters, I should be right on the money. The trick is to make sure that you take care of trans fluid leaks when they first start. That way you know whatever you drain out during the fluid/filter change will also mean your CVT Trans is full or within a reasonable amount, without fear of damaging the trans. Ya know, it would have been nice if Chrysler didn't hide the capacity of these transmissions like it was the 11 herbs and spices used in Kentucky fried Chicken... Really Asinine...

NO use CVT oil for the CVT type transmission. I think I used "OEM" brand from Canadian Tire up here in Canada. Its a cheap brand and did the trick. ATF fluid will destroy the clutch. Cheers.

There's a transmission fluid temperature sensor in the Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Patriot. I had a chronic problem with transmission overheating with mine that resulted in a lemon lawsuit against Jeep (Chrysler). They settled. You know what those idiots did? They didn't put the correct amount of CVT fluid at the factory and after servicing it to replace the transmission cooler bypass valve; basically the equivalent of a thermostat for an engine cooling system. The Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Patriot are good economic concept vehicles but I don't know if I'd buy one again.

Do you know the correct amount of trans fluid for the CVT ? 2007 Dodge Caliber 238,000 miles. At cold start-up transmission temp warning illuminates, check engine light, codes in order 1st u0402, 2nd u0101, and sometimes p0700, brake sensor ( code ?). I'm wondering if a filter and fluid would fix limp-mode. Dodge dealership said not to change fluid ? Any help would be greatly appreciated !

A new filter has an o-ring so if you remove the old filter just make sure you also check for the old o-ring because it can get stuck.

Use a battery drill with the clutch set to 2 or 3 on the pan bolts... Fast and nearly perfect on the torque. Add more magnets, they do more than the filters.

Yes, you can. If you let the car sit overnight there will only be a little fluid up by the cooler filter. Maybe an ounce or two.

Just maintenance. These transmissions are suspect. 2 main issues are the small filter clogs up and the belts snap. Changing the fluid and filters should help with both.

No need for the thermometer and gage. I have those but I don't use them. At ambient temperature 75 deg F you can remove/drain about 1 gallon of fluid and replace it with the same amount . Just let the car cool down overnite . The next day you can change the fluid without worrying about the temperature. A totally drained (torque converter included) is 1.5 gals.

I don't use sealant with transmission oil pans. These gaskets seems to hold up just fine. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt though. I used my dip stick to test the oil. Best thing to do is catch all the oil and put the exact same back. Jeeps been running better then ever.

When I need those low ft lbs I just hold the top of the socket wrench instead of the end. Give it a twist. If you hold the end you can over tourqe.. another trick if you can is to put the socket on a screwdriver handle. Same concept.

honestly for the price of the oil change for the CVT I Would try it. usually if its transmission on these they make a high pitch whine. engine shutter might be something else.

These CVT transmissions will start making a whining sound when they're over due since the filters start to clog up. I know on Patriot & Compass the brakes can act up causing all kinds of issues like that. Also when they make a strange noise when turning usually is the differential fluid needs a change. I have 188k on my 2010 & after I change the trans fluid, if I can't fix all the electrical issues this vehicle has & is known for having, I'm getting rid of it. it's not worth the headaches.

I have a 2012 Jeep compass and had the same problem, talked with a shop and they told me you take out the throttle body it's down on the front between the engine and radiator. Take some cleaner and clean around where the butterfly touches the outside, it gets gummed up with carbon and with it closed, at idle, it doesn't get enough air. I did it with mine and it really helped a lot.

yes it would be. I believe they are the exact same transmission. This is the basic procedure for many transmissions that dont have dip sticks. measure what comes out and put the same back in. Transmissions dont burn oil they leak it so if the transmission doesnt leak then you should have the same fluid that you started with.

Well the filter is for the transmission cooler so I don't imagine it would be there. Although if you have this cvt transmission you likely have this second filter. So doubt check.

I guess the cooler filter is listed in the factory service manual but not in the parts catalogue. The shops make me feel like a tool saying I didn't know what I was talking about. I have changed my fluid and trans filter and replaced the trans pan with a pan that has a drain plug but i have not changed the trans cooler filter.When i remove the trans cooler cover to access the filter will a lot of fluid drain from there and if so ,do you know about how much that would be so i can put that much back in or. do i need to drain fluid first to change the cooler filter? I just am trying to avoid draining all that fresh fluid i have in there now. Thank you so much for this info.

Old comment but figured a reply would be beneficial for future viewers. Jeep switched to the traditional 6 Speed Auto for the 2014 MY but FDII "off road" equipped models still had the CVT.

Do you have any knowledge regarding the 2007 model of the Jeep Patriot Limited (CVT? My transmission overheating temperature light just started coming on and the car just passed 130,000 miles. I am due for a change like this one and I am wondering if there is any difference between these parts or any variation in what kind of fluids or levels my car takes vs yours (such as the amount of fluid needed and fluid type).

Hey chase, to my knowledge alot of the overheating issues are due to that tiny filter at the top of the transmission. They seem to get clogged and restrict flow. Your transmission should be the same I would do the procedure the exact same way I did by removing old fluid and installing the same amount back in.

Well they smartened' up with the transmission. Nissan still uses Cvts though. I believe they use a 9 speed in the newer ones.

Jeep Patriot 2009 - be warned, you WILL NOT get to those bolts on the oil cooler. There isn't a tool on the planet that can fit in around and underneath a space only 2 inches wide and 4 inches long, which is approximately the amount of room you have to reach the bottom bolts.

Bottom right can reach through wheel well with a few long extensions. And the bottom left have to get at it from underneath with a ratchet wrench.

My Jeep Patriot 2008 front drive 2.0L has oil ( Tony red) in the radiator. Please where is the reddish oil from. Trans oil or steering oil l am not sure. Please help.

could be either. could also be rad fluid if it was red going in. I have some pink ish stuff in my shop right now. was it slippery?

Thanks for your feedback, l have discovered what the oil is, it's the trans oil. The auxiliary trans cooler is leaking.
