Great video!!! I have a 2012 Jeep Patriot and it has had issues with driving up steep grades where i would have to stop for about 15 mins for the transmission fluid to cool down (didn't know what was going on at the time). I also started to have power issues where I needed high rpms to maintain my speed and towards the end there was slipping gears problem. Not to mention the whining that started years ago...used to just happen after the engine would heat up and then the whining would happen all the time. I watched this video and did exactly what you did ( changing both filters and new fluid) and my car is back to working as well as it has in years!. I never leave comments, but i just wanted you to know you saved me big buck$....plus the great feeling of fixing the car myself. If you are having problems similar to mine, watch this video and maybe you can resolve it yourself.

Informative video. My Compass was whining like a jet plane, never had fluid change . Tried just a fluid change and tranny filter and quited right down . I blamed it on the Chrysler cvt fluid. I used cvt fluid from auto parts store (motomaster) at 1/3 the cost (made by Shell) and still running fine after 3yrs since change. Used engine oil dip stick. I will now be changing that other filter. Thks

We've taken our 2010 Patriot to the transmission shop every 50k miles since we owned it. That tranny is a big pain in the rear & we don't drive it over 65mph/2k RPM to prevent the whining & overheating. The shop never told us about the canister filter under the battery, they just clean & change filter under the pan. Great video!

This video helped me fix my 2011 Jeep Patriot! The whining sound was particularly bad on cold mornings. Would sometimes lessen after driving a while. When I opened up my CVT transmission, I did not have as many metal particles (Note: I stopped driving regularly as soon as the whining started), but the filters were VERY clogged! My theory is the filters clog and starve the transmission of the flow of fluid. Which is what creates the whining sound. After replacing both filters and about 6 quarts of new CVT ATF+4 fluid, my car runs well and the whine is gone! This happened to my Patriot at about the 115K mile mark. The service manual should be updated to recommend CVT filter changes every 80K IMO. The hardest part was getting the plastic skid plate on and off.
@QueenShelly82 Жыл бұрын
Your comment has given me hope. I just made an appt for Monday to go to the Jeep dealership because my 2011 Patriot is whining. It started when it turned cold. The car drives fine but the noise is constant . My mechanic said I need a new transmission, which I can't afford. He did NOT check the filter or anything. After reading your comment, I'm going to get a second opinion before selling it. Thx

@@QueenShelly82 Note: Jeep dealerships have an agreement with Nissan that Jeep will NOT repair the transmissions. (Nissan supplies the CVT transmission). You might be able to get them to do the filter and fluid change. But they will only ever recommend a transmission replacement even if it would be a simple fix like a bad solenoid in the valve body. This is a life saver. About a month ago, the temperature outside was reaching 90 degrees. Started whinning when I pressed gas, and got louder the more I gave her gas. Then transmission temperature light illuminated. Pulled over, sat in neutral, and it went away. Never has it shifted hard or shifted weird. Starting to do it more often now, with no transmission codes. EVERY trans shop either told me replace it or they dont mess with them. A lot of them told me its almost impossible to do a fluid and filter change. Again, she runs great other then the noise every so often, knock on wood. I will definitely be trying this. P.s if this does not work, does anyone know if I have to replace the transmission, can you put a standard transmission in it instead of the o.e cvt? I have a 2012 jeep patriot latitude 2wd w/cvt transmission.

Hi, make sure you change BOTH the filters, every 50K miles or so. As long as your trans didnt slip or anything bad its probably still ok. Trans shops are scared of cvt cuz they don’t know much about them. Change oil and filters and you will be good. Oil type and amount are important. i’m commenting because i have run out of options with my 2010 jeep patriot. i love this car, it is so amazing and has given me next to no issues except for one big one. i got this car in the fall and had no problems, but when the weather started to get hotter, my transmission ended up overheating after a 45 minute to an hour drive at around 65 mph. i’d like to say that i take really good care of my car and never push it too hard, i usually only ever go 65 at the fastest and never go over 3 rpm when accelerating, i usually only hit 2 and a half when i need to go fast. i’ve had my transmission overheat 3 times in the almost year that i’ve had it (this is the second 2010 patriot i’ve had, but my other was totaled in an accident, but i never had this problem, even in the summertime). after going to a mechanic, i found out that the previous owners had installed an after market ac unit and all of my hoses had been disconnected and were no longer cooling efficiently. i had the entire unit replaced and assumed that would fix it for good, it wasn’t until about three months later when i had been driving around for about an hour and a half to two hours that it happened again while i was going around 60 on the highway. most of my drive before was either on the interstate (65 mph) or in the city (30-45 mph) with the ac on because i had someone in the car with me, but usually i just drive with the windows down. afterwards, i took it to my mechanic and they couldn’t find anything wrong with it without tearing my transmission apart, so yesterday i brought it into a transmission shop and they had it for about a day and a half but couldn’t find anything wrong with it because they couldn’t get it to act up. they even said that everything sounded good and ran well. when they put the computer scanner on my car, it comes up with a torque converter code, but they said that of that was the issue, then it would happen more frequently, rather than only three times. even after with it overheating, they said that my transmission fluid looks super clean and is completely filled up. i’m about to make a long drive soon and i really need this issue resolved. sorry for the long read, but if there is anything that you can diagnose from this, or any advice that you could give that would be fantastic! i was thinking about having an aftermarket transmission cooler installed as well as changing my filters, i don’t know if that would help, but i only need it to make this trip and then it will only be going city speeds for a while, at least until winter.

I am glad that the new filter and fluid fixed it. I have a 2017 Rogue that I am planning a fluid change on. It is really just preventative maintenance more than anything. We had a Jeep Patriot and it made until 30,000 miles before it had problems. The problem was it would not go. Of course with CVTs you will get a lot pf people who have had good luck with them and a lot of people who have had nothing but problems and curse the day the things were ever invented. The way I see it there are also some really awful automatic transmissions too. The early Volkswagen 09Gs were horrible to. Some had bad valve bodies and then at one point Volkswagen was telling people the fluid never needed changed because it was supposed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. You can imagine how hard that came back and bit them!!! The irony of those being so unreliable was that they were really made by Aisin who also makes transmissions for Toyotas. In fact Toyota owns a large part of Aisin if I am not mistaken. But the irony of the 09G reliability is that the Toyota Aisin transmissions were reliable.

Most of what's on the magnet is the pitting created by the sides of the steel belt as the Pulleys adjust with the input shaft at high torque, It's generally minimized by ECU's letting off on acceleration as the pulleys move into the appropriate input output ratio. Modern ECU adjustments can be felt against older ECU settings by simply putting your foot down on the accelerator pedal. Early Jatco CVT ECU's will have you accelerate almost instantly off the line with the pulleys adjusting and your RPM decreasing as you meet the desired speed set by the pedal. If you put your foot position to the same spot with the newer Jatco CVT ECU settings, you will loose power momentarily, as the pulleys adjust, then the throttle servo will apply the throttle same as the older settings, but with the pulleys preset so that the CVT steel belt doesn't score the cones, and the pulleys don't chew away the grooves that allow them to move smoothly closer and apart. The major issue now with the Jatco CVT is with 2 kinds of engine breaking. When you are in a ratio where the input and output shafts have the same RPM, that's considered to be "close" to top gear. if you take your foot off the accelerator in traditional automatic cars, it's normal for it to drop into Overdrive (or top gear) as the engine has minimal load. In CVT it is the same. When you take your foot off the accelerator, the engine throttle adjusts to meet neutral load to the input shaft of the CVT, the CVT and throttle adjust in sync until the pulleys are in the "top gear" ratio, and then the throttle lets off. in both situations engine breaking is minimal and if going down a hill follows, you may "downshift" so that you have a much higher RPM in the engine, thus more compression strokes and better engine breaking. Here's the problem. In traditional Automatic cars, the torque converter aides you in a smooth down shift, when you put the car into 2 or L, or down shift with paddles. The car immediately shifts and the engine stresses apply. No throttle is used, the Jump in RPM is purely from the load on the engine from the transmission as the input shaft speeds up. And for the purpose of slowing down, this is perfect. However, In a CVT transmission doing the same thing attempts to change gear ratios using the pulleys, the engine first applies a little bit of throttle so that the input shaft of the CVT isn't trying to slow down. when the pulleys then move into the simulated Gear ratio, the engine throttle is released. It's the Reverse of accelerating from stop. However, An engines Max RPM during engine breaking is governed by the mechanics behind the engine, and not a limiter on the ECU, so when you down shift rapidly in a CVT, or even just click the stick into 2 or L, the engine can only throttle up to maximum RPM allowed by the ECU. This may be slower then predicted speed of the input shaft when the pulleys adjust to the fixed ratio of 2 or L, or whatever the paddles are set to. When the pulleys adjust, the input shaft to the CVT will be going much slower then it needs to turn for the output shaft to meat the ratio, set by the ECU, and the CVT is designed to adjust rapidly to ensure a fast ratio change (see below). The CVT pulleys adjust with the CVT belt under higher stresses then designed to tolerate and the whole system deteriorates rapidly in several ways. First, the insides of the cones become scored by the walls of the CVT belt as it tries pull inwards on the output cones, the steel bands rub harder as they go around the cones, and as they heat up rapidly, can lead to snapping, thus the belt collapses and the power train from engine to wheels is broken. Next, the cone halves are connected to shafts and move inwards and outwards with respect to the shafts. The system in place to allow smooth movements of the cone halves in a Jatco CVT are 3 channels on the shaft with steel balls that sit partially inside the cone halves, lubricated by the CVT fluid. When the pulleys adjust under load, the steel balls are under much higher stresses as the cone halves adjust allowing the weaker of the metals to score against each other, leading to the channels becoming chewed out which then allows the ball bearings to squeeze out of their grooves, leading to the cone have turning with respect to the shaft. This leads to the pulley unable to move inwards or outwards, and the Steel belt can then be forced to break apart if the steel bands are stretched from the contracting of both pulleys. Also, the cones become instantly useless as they can't shift ratio. Foot note: For all intensive purposes, automatic cars when shifted into 2 or L ... shift instantaneously to the desired gear ratio so that imidiate engine breaking takes place, even if the engine is red lining and you are flying down a hill. In the event of a CVT transmission, to fulfill the pose of emergency engine breaking, the smooth running of a CVT transmission is compromised. the only fix to prevent the excessive wear on the CVT mechanical system is to have the ECU deny the downshift due to the excessive loads presented on the CVT transmission, thus making the physical downshift, uneventful and the car continuing on at speed with no emergency engine breaking differences. I think that's right... could be wrong

If you take your cvt jeep to a mechanic , they will only change the fluid. Even the dealer will only change the pan screen filter if they find metal shavings. NO ONE will change the upper paper filter. Unfortunately that upper paper filter is VERY IMPORTANT to change. Even if nothing else was done here, JUST changing the upper filter would make a big difference in transmission operation, even with dirty fluid. The fluid will not cool or flow properly if that paper filter is clogged.

Hello from Moose Jaw in Saskatchewan I was at the dealership today with my Patriot it is a 2011 cvt 2.4 l. My transmission run hot 2 years ago, I stopped let the jeep cool down because the car was just screaming after the light was of I kept driving everything normal. So , I don't know if the oil changes after it overheated but 3 Days ago my transmission started not to shift proper anymore. I have to play a little with the gaspeddle and he shifted sometimes normal sometimes not. The dealership sad I need a new transmission for 9.700.00 dollar. Nobody checked the oil or the filters what do you think I have the feeling your way would be the right one. I think they want to make money. I am a Veteran and on CPP they don't pay much.

@JohnVH Life. Hi John, glad I found a resent video. Okay, my 2010 Jeep Patriot started making a whinny noise which my wife told me about but until today I never heard it before. ( I have 188k on it.) Now I did buy the dipstick you have on amazon but what I noticed was my engine oil dipstick fits into the trans filler tube, so while at a auto salvage yard I grabbed one that was about 4 inches longer. On level ground, I took this dipstick I bought, trimmed it to about the same length & then used a dremel & scored a line so I could get an actuate reading. Now to the trans issue. Where does it say what cvt transmission model I have in the vehicle... I figured Jeep probably made a few for this year, so do I get that information from the VIN, or is there a plate with the trans number on it. I have a 2.4L engine w/ automatic 6 speed. Thanks for uploading the video because I'll be doing the work here at home. Edit: My 4WD! warning light comes on but if I hit a big chuckhole, it'll usually go out so I'm assuming (& Hoping) it's just a bad ground wire (since I just found 4 wires out of 10 in a grounding pigtail that were corroded & fell out when I unbolted that ground eyelet & lifted it up to look at it.) I wanted to get the information on my trans & do an oil/filter change first because I figured it may take care of the 4WD! light issue when I drive. Thank you, Dan
@JohnVHLife4 жыл бұрын
6 speed? As far as I know they only had the CVT and a manual trans in these up until 2014 or something. All the CVT's should take the same fluid and two filters, to my knowledge.
@montydaniels10544 жыл бұрын
@@JohnVHLife No auto trans. I mentioned it with the engine type. I'm still looking for a tag somewhere that tells me what trans I have. I suppose using the VIN & calling a dealer will get that info. That way after I change the filters & fill it back up, I'll be able to mark this dipstick with a cold mark & hot mark instead of using this 4 foot 1 stick fits all thing from amazon. Then I'll use that plug instead of leaving the dipstick in the trans.
