is it really necessary to bleed the line? wont opening the cap under the hood alleviate enough pressure to compress the piston?

Now to get started. i already changed the brakes front and rear. Now to change the rotors for both ends... Thanks for the tutorial. Been looking for something very detailed.

Awesome video. I tip if you add some break fluid to the water bottle you can bed the breaks without pinching the line... Just make sure the hose is sitting in the liquid... And the guide clips don't need to be removed from the caliper but it is helpful. .. Awesome vid...
@FalkensMaze849 жыл бұрын
Just an fyi. I have 2006 scion tc. I talked to the manager at the local Firestone and he said that bedding the brakes is not necessary for brakes any more. That was an old method that is not valid for cars after the early 1980's. Autozone lists the torque values as: caliper bracket 79 ft lbs caliper mounting (on the slider pins) 25 ft lbs brake line bolt 22 ft lbs lug nuts 85 ft lbs I assume those numbers are correct. They match closely to what I have seen elsewhere, but you should always double check.
@lenixtorres68006 жыл бұрын
In reality the brakes need to be bled onl when the system has been open, (like when any line breaks) otherwise is not necessary. And the important reason is because of the easy break fluid can become aerated.

This is a great video, it just sort of annoys me that it's the only one that comes up for scions when you're looking for the REAR replacement process, which has some differences due to the parking brake setup.

Phil Schultz you should look up chrisfixit videos, he does a good job explaining how tos. I'm pretty confident in changing my rear brakes after watching.

Thank You for this. I've always been terrified of trying to replace my brakes myself, you know fear of crashing and painful death and all when it didn't work. My brakes have been very far past still safe, but funds wouldn't allow for a garage visit. Today it all came to a head when the car scared me. I saw your video, went to Auto zone and bought 80 dollars worth of pads and rotors. Less than two hours later I was back on the road, with a safe vehicle (2007 Scion TC). Had I known it was that easy, I would have been replacing pads regularly.

Brakes are very simple, but very easy to mess up.. Make sure everything is seated/lubricated properly and torqued to manufacturer specifications. Then you'll be good as gold :)
@edgehoho11 жыл бұрын
That's how I always did it. I never bleed the brake, just use a clamp to compress the piston.
@peteypoobear4 жыл бұрын
You would only need to bleed the brakes if flushing your system or disconnecting a brake line/replacing a caliper.

Thanks man! Im gonna be doing my brakes and Rotors on Monday. Both are brand new.. Ive changed the brakes before but i think i did a bad job.. One question though do you have to bleed your brake fluid? Thats the only part im nervous about.
@gammatnt8 жыл бұрын
+Zachary Bissemberg no , you do not have to bleed the brake fluid when replacing pads and rotors.
@miniwarrior76 жыл бұрын
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air and does go bad over time so bleeding them sometimes wouldn't hurt.

I have yet to try to change the brakes on my car, but this video is very detailed and should help me a lot whenever I do get the courage to try to change my brakes. I know that you can visually inspect if your brakes or rotors are bad, but what do you look for in order to determine that they are bad and need to be changed? Also, what brand of brakes and rotors are recommended for TCs? I've used Advance Auto Parts Wearever brand, but I'm not sure if they are the best ones.

You forgot to mention torque specs. Disc brake cylinder assembly bolts are at 25 ft lbs torque and the front disc brake cylinder mounting bolts are at 79 ft lbs of torque. Great video tho.

Question? is it really necessary to open the bleeder valve? ....I have never done that before..with the tube and bottle .(on other vehicles I just press caliber real slow with the c clamp)...Why did you open it? .....but the rest seems so spot on I hate to doubt you...great Video....

Open up the fluid reservoir and put wrap some rags around it. When you open up the calipers some fluid might spill out. When you are done with the break pads and u put everything back together pump the breaks and check the fluid. Make sure it's where it needs to be and you are solid.

Hey I'm 16 and it would be my first time doing this bc I don't wanna have to go to a shop and overpay for this but would u need to put in break fuild after you replace each one or at the very end when your completely done (I'm changing 2 rotors on my car)
@JamesFixIt2 жыл бұрын
Due to the added stack height of the new pads and rotors, you might not have to put in any more brake fluid, but do make sure that it is at the full level.

What if I wanna do all my breaks would I drain all of them before putting new break fluid in or do them one at a time. Also driving the car should I do it after all four are done or one at a time
@AngryKevin2o118 жыл бұрын
Start the flushing process from the rear of the vehicle, furthest away from the brake fluid reservoir. Attach a hose to the bleeder valve then insert the other end of the hose inside a old water bottle that's clean of course with about 1/4 inch of clean fluid inside the bottom of the bottle. Now that's done, crack the bleeder valve open and get into your driver seat and pump the brake pad down a few times, all while making sure the reservoir never goes empty also while making sure the old fluid is being bled into the water bottle. Of course you'd be constantly refilling it when it begins to get really low on old dirty fluid. When you begin to see clean fluid being pushed out the bleed valve that brake line is filled with clean fluid. On to the next brake line which would be on the opposite side of the vehicle, then move to the front end brake lines. Clean fluid in the reservoir and in the lines, all possible air and contaminants removed from the system now you're ready to compress the pistons and carry on with the pad and rotor changing process.

Hi what type of brakes should I get for a o7 Scion tC??? I have no clue on what kinds to get.
@cloudsandman10 жыл бұрын
you can go on Carid.com to check for the part, it was about $300 for the complete kit including all 4 rotors, break pads front and rear. One thing that you want to note is that for the mounting bracket pins, it is recommended to use silicon paste, NOT grease because the chemical component of the bracket may react to the grease and mess it up. Silicon paste is safer for this purpose, otherwise the grease can be applied to the back or front of the shims, no problem for these.
@animi50410 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your response! :)
@section3111 жыл бұрын
if you read the lube pouch for the shim you applied it says. "For Use With Brake Pads Not Having Anti-Squeal Shims. " Does that mean you don't have to lube antisquel shims at all? Cause my scion xb has anti squeel shims.

What is the torque specs for those two caliper bolts?
@AngryKevin2o118 жыл бұрын
Some fluid might be released from the bleeder valve when re engaging the caliper piston. Bleeding the lines is only nessicary when changing break lines, calipers, or the fluid is contaminated, master cylinder replacement, not entirely sure about the brake booster though. you're basically flushing out as much if not all air bubbles, and dirty fluid as possible using clean fluid to chase the bad stuff out. just make sure your brake fluid resivoir never goes dry other wise you'd be risking damaging other braking components. if by chance something like that does happen restart the entire process. There's no shame in having a professional doing the flush.

pinchin hoses not good it could damage it, also why opening the bleeder when can only push the piston back yea it sends old fluid back but theres old fluid in the resevoir so it really dont make a difference if u want to get the old fluid out do a complete flush also braking the pads in take more than 15 stops actually its recommended to brake them for 1000 miles normal braking and not hard as u described

@SHADOWBLACKs65011 жыл бұрын
You should use brake ADHESIVE,not grease on the back of the pads so they adhere to the piston, you don't want the pads floating around causing squeaking noises.
