Interesting detail about the steel tank. Didn't think anybody was using that today.
@AM_SDG3 жыл бұрын
A steel tank is cost cutting measure from Toyota. Customer will pay for that when it rusts and the vehicle is beyond warranty. Most of the manufacturers are using plastic tanks from the late 1990s or early 2000s.
@globetlottel3 жыл бұрын
Steel fuel tanks can withstand higher pressure than conventional plastic fuel tanks, which is why they are used for Plug-in hybrids. On pure ICE vehicles, the fuel tank is not pressure tight but allowed to “breathe” through a canister of active carbon which will absorb any fuel gases. When the engine starts, it will suck fresh air though the carbon canister and thereby deplete any fuel bound to the carbon. Since a PHEV might be operating for weeks on end without the ICE ever running, too much of the fuel might evaporate if the tank was an open system. Hence the use of steel tanks which are closed shut and not allowed to “breathe”.

Steel fuel tanks is a sulev, Super ultra-low emissions vehicle, standard. Steel tanks are known to produce less emissions from fuel vapors.

You can see why Toyota still wishes to pursue the Hybrid, Plug-In or Otherwise, because they have been refining it for years and are so damned good at it. But the complexity is so ripe for maintenance and otherwise failure if not serviced with regularity. Of course, Toyota has long made it known, if not openly, that theirs is a progression from Hybrid to the ICE Hybrid-Hydrogen, thence to the FCV Hydrogen, with the smoothest possible evolution. Toyota never conceived of a future with the entirely battery/electric powered vehicle alone. Which is why they are so incredibly behind the curve. They're trying to half-heartedly play catch-up now, but I believe it might be too late for them as a major player.

As a consumer I would never purchase a hybrid. What is the point?
@jamesvandamme77863 жыл бұрын
A mild hybrid gives you great mileage in the city. A PHEV is an EV that you can take on a long trip without range anxiety. Whether that fits your use case is up to you. We have one ICE car and will replace the other with an EV, and take one or the other depending on the destination. A mild hybrid makes no sense for us; very little stop & go traffic.

Why only positive talking points in these 3 experts analysis? Nothing critical; seems rather unbalanced. They neglected to talk about the infamous “cable gate” issue of corrosion with the orange high voltage cable connector into the motor generator rear (MGR) plaguing customers. Toyota’s solution to “fix” this was simply cut a hole in the orange housing and put a plastic shielding underneath it in the 2022+ models.

Toyotas are super well built but because of the focus on quality and reliability, the technology they possess is generally a generation behind other carmakers like Hyundai/Kia.

Greetings from the U.K. - as a keen DIY mechanic for 40 years, I do admire Toyotas engineering and design standards. However I really don’t like PHEVs. If a friend asks me to work on one, my heart sinks. A modern combustion vehicle as already ridiculously complicated to work on, then you add an electric drive train and a system manage the transition and it becomes an absolute nightmare to work on. I always advise friends to keep away from PHEVs and get a basic combustion car or EV instead.
@kstaxman23 жыл бұрын
Exactly right. No way this car doesn't become a money pit as soon as it comes off warrenty. You are maintaining TWO drive systems and the electronics to make it work. They were a work around till we got batteries that would last and provide range now we have them this neither electric nor gas idea isn't the way to go.
@jayhawkeyes3 жыл бұрын
@@kstaxman2 Nonsense. The electric drive train, which requires little maintenance, will take 50K miles off of the first 100K miles driven or more. That means less wear and tear on the ICE engine.

Your fear would be valid up to around 2007, now it sounds quite uninformed. Toyota's PHEVs are basically their hybrids with bigger battery. And they sold millions of them and they have been excellent reliability/durability-wise, better than conventional cars. It makes sense when you think about it - especially modern diesels are incredibly complicated with high temperatures, pressures and a lot of exhaust treatment technology. Same goes for modern automatic transmissions.Toyota's hybrids and PHEV are mechanically much simpler and their electric parts have been well tested until now.
@dmitryriegle22713 жыл бұрын
You don't take an ICE car and "add an electric drive train". The EV components replace(!) a significant number of components from an ICE car with things that you'd see in a BEV. The car in the video has electric motors in a configuration barely more complex than what you'd find in a Tesla. But adding them allows it to not have a classical ICE transmission, or a starter, or an alternator. Now add in that the engine doesn't have to run most of the time, and when it does it only needs to run in the optimal power range, and you get a vehicle that's would be more reliable than any non-hybrid combustion car.

@@PhiTonics I don't think that's what they were getting at. Here in America, we have much less interaction between pedestrians and cars and no experience with attempts to reduce injuries. Even if it was unable to drive the car with a completely dead battery--- If I could just have it running to help extend range while my battery is still operating-- such as on long trips, that would be a great multi purpose work truck that every welder/ construction worker/ shop owner/ oil field guy would kill to have..
