Wait until after you remove the oil drain plug to remove the oil filler cap. The oil will not arc as much and you'll have less of a spill/cleanup and you wont get oil on your cross member. Then when you go up to take the cap of the filter, then remove the oil fill cap. Enough of the oil will have come out that it won't get all over the place.

I've tried it both ways, and it always arcs a lot. I tend to always miss the arc by about 1" with my drain pan, so a little bit of oil always gets on my garage floor.

When replacing the adapter stalk, should it be installed spring-side up (closed side)? Great video, thank you!🙏🏻
@fondupot18 күн бұрын
There is only one way for it to go in. There’s two small tabs on the bottom of the stalk that clip it into the oil filter housing. The stalk is sort of “loose” when it’s mounted. Is not rigid if that makes sense.

Appreciate the video. Couple questions. Does the purchased oil filter come with its own brand new gasket? After changing oil do you let truck run in idle for a certain amount of time before driving off? Does the magnetic screw also have a gasket? If the magnetic screw doesn’t require a gasket, what is the reason that it doesn’t? If you choose to stay with the OEM screw where can I get more of them gaskets?
@fondupot3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Yes the oil filter should come with a new gasket. I have always used the AC delco ones and they come with a new gasket. You can let it idle for a minute or two it won’t hurt. I do that and then check the level to make sure there’s enough oil. The gold plug magnetic screw has a crush washer gasket yes. It comes with one and should be replaced with each oil change. You can buy packs of them on Amazon. I think I linked them in the video description. The OEK plug uses a rubber gasket that’s attached. And does not need to relaxed. If for some reason that gasket goes bad you would need to get an entire new OEM plug.

Thx for the vid. Was wondering if the dealer who sold me my Colorado did a fake oil change since so much else was wrong so I was planning to do another long before it says to. Anyway after checking the dipstick its full and doesn’t look very dark so maybe they did after all. Still since I got it from a BMW dealer I’m wondering if they would have had the right filter and so only did the oil. Does anyone reading this think an old filter wouldn’t cause the oil to get dark much sooner, because if so it’s likely not an old one and no need to do another change.

I just did an oil change on a 2017 Toyota Corolla and had the option of going with an oil filter insert/element (like the one you show in this video) or a traditional screw on oil filter "can." Is there no screw on oil filter option for these GM trucks? It seems like that plastic stalk could be replaced with a threaded steel pipe to convert to a screw on oil filter.
@fondupot3 жыл бұрын
The Motors in the Colorado/Canyon use a cartridge style filter as shown in the video. But the Full size Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra use spin on filters. It’s just the way they design the motor. No inherent difference. Both serve he same function. The plastic stalk is needed as it has some sort of spring valve in it to prevent the filter from collapsing when there is oil pressure. I’m sure someone could figure out a way to install a remote filter that utilizes a spin on filter. But I don’t see the need for that. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment.
@timweidner14063 жыл бұрын
Thanks -- yes, I traded in a 2011 Silverado for my 2021 Colorado. I have not had to do an oil change yet, but was hoping for a spin-on filter option because the plastic cap and replaceable element seems fragile and problematic, compared with the spin on filter.
@fondupot3 жыл бұрын
@@timweidner1406 The cap is quite quite robust. Yes, it is plastic, but I wouldn't worry about it needing to be replaced. I am quite active on the forums as well, and I haven't see any issues related to the cap coming up. As long as you take the time to make sure to thread it on straight, and not to over tighten it, you should be fine for many years to come. But if it makes you feel better, purchase a replacement cap and keep it in your tool chest.

@@fondupot that's why i said mix it with a heavier weight oil, just 1 quart of say 10w30 , for example, half of that with 16 oz of mystery oil, my silverado took 0w20, it is like water, the molecules in the oil are what make up the staying power of viscosity, not just the oil flow rate, but,, yup,, it's personal choice, i've been using it my whole driving life, grew up on a small farm, i drove truvk over the road, every engine i touched had mystery oil put in it, look it up

My 2015 canyon did not have the filter stalk when I removed the filter , the old filter looks twisted a little bit . I looked inside the filter and it wasn’t there either . Is my truck safe to drive ? It went to 20% oil life before I changed the oil today

2015s are slightly different, the motor is a different build. But I think you still need the stalk in there to keep the filter from collapsing. I would get it looked at.

You missed checking the oil level AFTER starting the engine. Once the filter fills up with oil the level will drop. I also check the level before putting in the last quart in case all of the old oil didn't get drained - you already hit the issue of overfilling on another comment, checking before the last quart is a simple double check.

Probably doesn’t register the oil pressure until after the gauge sweep. 45 psi is good for idle. I wouldn’t worry about it.

oem filter is fine. I’m not going extended intervals. Normal 5000-6000 mile oil changes are fine on the AC delco filter

The VCT solenoids clog up very easily, but are thankfully extremely fast and simple to clean or replace. I also like to run some Seafoam as a precautionary first step. Probably a decent idea to clean the MAF as well.
@fondupot9 ай бұрын
@@JoeMoutard I haven't had to clean my VCT solenoids yet. Where are they located?
@JoeMoutard9 ай бұрын
@@fondupot There are 2 per bank (exhaust and intake) and they are located right at the front of the valve covers. You have to pull the trash can lid off to get at them on the passenger side. And then pop off the throttle body to access the driver side. Each is secured by a single 10mm bolt and has a small hardshell connector. They pop out pretty easily from there and I like to do one at a time to avoid possible contamination. If you hit them with a little bit of brake cleaner and then blow them out with an air chuck, you can keep them working well and stop them from kicking DTCs . And just to correct myself from earlier, these would be VVT solenoids in GM speak.

Good video. You do know that GM explicitly states to NOT use engine oil additives. Best case scenario the additive does nothing, worst case scenario is that is damages engine. Engine oil additives are essentially nothing but snake oil anyway. I did see that you're using Extended Performance Mobile 1. Contrary to what people think, that oil will do NOTHING to protect the engine more in the for 7500 miles. EP is for extended drain intervals, any oil meeting DEXOS 1 will do for regular drain intervals.
@fondupot2 жыл бұрын
Coworker talked me into it. I only used it once. Haven’t used it since. Truck has 30,000 miles on it now. I change the oil when the OLM gets below 20% usually equates to 5500 miles on an oil change.

@@fondupot That's fine, but you're wasting Mobil 1 EP. Also, don't use that snake oil.
