Great to see everythingdiy always seem to get correct parts, I have seen way too much people using the "wrong" fluid in their gen2 MS3 transmissions as people don't really realize there are quite a number of differences between the two gens. And in case anyone is still wondering, the service manuals clearly states: Gen1 transmission: 75W90 GL-4 or GL-5 Gen2 transmission: 75W80 GL-4 Although the transmissions are fairly similar, I am sure Mazda must have figured out good reasons to switch viscosity, might have something to do with the revamped ratios or other improvements. Sure using the "wrong" oil won't break it, but viewing that most people who put in 75W90 all stated "it shifts more difficult when trans is cold" but then goes on to say "but it works great when warm", I would greatly suspect they are adding unnecessary wear and tear during daily driving as well as lowering their fuel economy in the long run. My guess would be 75w90 may be fit for the gen2s under more extreme circumstances, such as track use where the cars are properly warmed up first then driven hard. But daily driving our gen2s 75W80 is likely way more balanced, and I am pretty positive that a lot of people rip on their cars before having it fully warmed up, smoking turbos, transmission problems on low mileage cars? Don't seem right to me, there are people well over 100k miles with non of those problems, and there can't be that many lemons, just goes to prove proper driving technique and maintenance does matter.

132k miles on my 2011 I just got injectors done carbon cleaning and blasting basically everything you can do maintenance wise and replaced alot of stuff. The engine transmission and turbo however are still stock and doing just fine. I'm even going to rely on my stock turbo for what I imagine will be quite some time to come. So ya trans put at 20k, turbos out at 35k, c'mon guys its not the car. In the words of the great scotty kilmer "Hahaha"

Excellent video, thank you Everythingdiy and to all for helpful comments. My car, a 2010 Mazda3 i (2.0 engine) w 65,000 mi. was developing an intermittent "chirp" when shifted from 1st to 2nd. I suspected bad syncro operation and hoped this might be old-broken-down-lubrication related. My research led me here, and I followed some of the procedure in this video to replace my original spec 3 qt. GL 5 semi-synthetic transaxle fluid w. Redline GL4 MTL 90. Its been a few days now and no "chirps" so far. Also the shifter does seem to move from gear to gear more smoothly and w less resistance. On my car the airbox removal looked difficult so I chose to work from underneath the vehicle. Bottom splash-guard removal was NOT necessary. The transaxle drain plug was situated aproximately 4" aft from the back lip of the splash-guard, so there was plenty of clearance for the fluid to drain. The fill plug - which I loosened a bit first - is on the driver's side of the transaxle, as similar to in this video, and it could easily be accessed from the side after removal of the plastic side splash-guard panel which connects from inside the wheel well ( 2x 10 mm bolts and one phillips screw) to the side of the bottom splash guard (2x 10 mm bolts). I used a Kobalt 1/2" drive 24mm 12pt socket on the fill and removal plugs w no problems. I used a Plews 55001 Lubrimatic Fluid Pump ($7.12 at Amazon) to pump the fluid into the transaxle w no problems, having pre-warmed the fluid by letting it sit in the sun. The whole procedure took a couple of hours. My car definitely shifts better and I would recommend doing this to others as being well worth the time and money. Snick, snick, snick... find those apexes - and NEVER go automatic!!

mike guffei or just have a torque wrench and it a cheater bar for a greater fulcrum point. If your bolt is stuck then it was probably torqued to tight. Which means you need to re-dye the threads and buy a bigger bolt. If you have the room it's cheaper.

Another suggestion is to always break loose the fill plug before removing the drain plug in this operation. Getting stuck with an empty tranny and no way to fill it back up right is NOT fun.
@simplyceem414510 жыл бұрын
With this little tip you are never stuck with an empty transmission - simply flip the car on it's roof (make sure you set it down onto something soft like a towel to avoid scratching the roof) and fill her back up. Please also remember that the engine oil, fuel, and brake fluid (if you have a ventilated reservoir cap) should be removed prior to flipping the car in order to avoid leakages and cylinders full of engine oil. You're welcome!
@fifteenbyfive10 жыл бұрын
Simply Ceem lol just put the car up on the rotisserie, right. :D In all seriousness though, it depends on where we come from I suppose. I'm cracking 4-pt male and female plugs loose that haven't been touched since Tokyo over 40 years ago. I read horror stories on forums of people destroying their plugs trying to get them off because in that length of time - they're seized. I needed to use healthy doses of PB blaster and a 24" crescent wrench to even budge the male-fill plugs on my first fluid change. I had to use both arms too, now I'm a little guy but I'm ripped. The female drain plugs needed high heat from the torch even with a breaker bar, especially because the factory used thread sealant on them! It's just a principle I'd now use for any car: Crack the fill plug first and cover your ass. If anyone has any reason why this is a bad idea, what is it?
@simplyceem414510 жыл бұрын
Certainly not a bad idea at all, I'd run with that. Just be careful heating the boxes though, those magnesium alloy castings don't like localised heat too much and can easily fracture from the expansion of a hot spot :S

My guy recommended torco RTF race transmission fluid not the mtf, but the rtf. It suggests use in applications requiring 75w90 or 75w80. I have 132k miles on my speed I purchased it second hand and its probably never been changed. So 1st change at 132k using torco rtf and I will let you all know how it goes. It says you can use as a 10w-40 motor oil but it's 30 dollars a quart so its fairly expensive but of course worth it in the trans especially since its changed at such large intervals. A 200$ oil change every 5000 would get real old real fast I can imagine unless you own a $80,000+ vehicle hahaha.

In my driveway the gravel is an inch or two down below the garage opening. That leaves just enough room to get under the car for oil changes if I bring it forward so the front wheels are maybe 2 inches from the garage opening. This way I don't have to jack it up to get under it for changing oil and I can even do my transmission fluid that way too. My car is a 2006 Jetta 2.5. I have already done my transmission fluid once that way and it still runs 30,000 miles later so that doesn't seem to have hurt anything. I don't check the fluid the way they say, I just put in about 3.5 liters which is what drains out of my car and others have said in the forums that they have also drained 3.5 liters so that seems to be how much to put in.

With these bottles not having a transparent strip, I would go to the dollar tree and get a cheap measuring cup. Premeasuring the fluid in a clean bottle with the strip is another option. Just make sure it is clean or even better yet a bottle that had a compatible fluid in it so that small traces of the other fluid won't do anything noticeable.

How did you like the Redline MTL? I have a 2010 Speed as well, but many folks with 2nd-gen Speeds run MT-90 (75w90) or an equivalent instead (like Motorcraft xt-m5-qs, which many Speed owners swear by, both Gen 1 and 2).
@everythingdiy7 жыл бұрын
I've tried the Motorcraft stuff it didn't work for me I would always get annoying grind in 3rd gear just like I did with the OEM fluid. Once I switched to MTL the issue never came back and shifts are like butter. For me it's MTL for life.

@mituc7 жыл бұрын
For the Speed3/3MPS you should use RedLine 75W90 LS - the LS version has some friction modifier for the LSD we have in our cars.
@numinous47897 жыл бұрын
Victor Tarhon-Onu Not according to the owner's manual. Also, I'm on several highly populated Mazdaspeed forums with folk who know these cars inside/out, and it's very rare to see someone recommend friction modifier - maybe 1 in 10 folks. I say that to ask this: why "should" I use what you're recommending? What's your rationale for ignoring what the Mazda engineers said?
@mituc7 жыл бұрын
The speed3 has a limited slip differential and it's using the same oil as the gearbox oil. The oil for gearboxes that have an LSD is just a bit different. If you put normal gearbox oil in a gearbox that has an LSD it will start grinding, and this is exactly what's going to happen if you put "normal" gearbox oil (meaning without friction modifier) at the dealer, the kind that "the Mazda engineers" said it's good. If you live in Europe I recommend using Millers CRX LS NT 75w90, otherwise the Redline GL-5 LS 75w90 is just as good.

@radekw7084 жыл бұрын
@@keatonmccarthy3285 No its fine and car is at 110k miles. I do believe there is some noise coming from the release bearing when its cold. I just changed my first clutch in my other car, ford focus 2001 2L (it had a bit of life) I did it at 150k miles and the clutch did look pretty badly worn. It had maybe 10k miles of life left on it, maybe not. So I'm thinking I at least have another 40k miles on it, but then again this car I think has more hwy miles so that may increase clutch life to 200k miles.. I want to avoid getting towed though, so better to do it earlier (150k mile mark). When your clutch actually goes you can feel it slipping (if the disc wears out). It could also be that your pressure plate or bearing go and you can't switch gears at all. Best case is its the slipping disc and you now have X amount of kms before it has no resistance at all and is 100% slipping. I think I experienced all cases now throughout the years.

Couple things...From experience, I know you can run the MTL for longer than 20,000 miles with no ill effects...also, shouldn't that car be using a GL-5 tranny fluid? The MTL is only GL-4 rated....

This car does autocrosses, track days and is generally driven hard day to day. We change the transmission fluid often to keep shifting as crisp and precise as possible. We also want to keep the transmission components clean and contamination free to get the longest life possible. As far as transmission fluid all Mazdaspeed 3's and 6's call for GL-4 gear oil, GL-5 would cause issues with the synchros. Thanks for watching!

+bblando65 mazdaspeed 3 and 6's have brass bushings on the synchros and gl-5 has been known to cause problems with yellow metals such as brass and gold so the trans in these cars require gl-4 where as in the trans case and rear diff of the speed 6 you can use gl-5 as they are just regular silver metal components

Good video, but remove fill plug first, they don't always open easy, so open fill plug first or else some day you Gina run into a world of hurt, everything else fine, well done
