Here in the UK we don't like to throw good stuff away and we know bike maintenance can be thirsty work, so why not try adding some baking soda to the oil and pumping 60 ft/lbs of air through with your metric bike pump once the oil has cooled down (optional - leave in the fridge for 600 seconds), then you have a refreshing cola style beverage to enjoy.

I bought a non-running 1969 Honda CL90. Guy i bought it from insisted that "its a two stroke" and that "it doesn't need the battery to run, it just needs the carburetor cleaned!" Long story short, I fixed the broken points wiring, set the ignition timing and installed a battery. Then checked that it had oil and it started right up. It ran okay but it made a terrible rattling noise... I drained the oil and found it was filled with blue 2 stroke oil and metal shavings...

My roommate flushes the engine with the oil he saved from the prior scheduled service. You have to make sure you don't pour all the oil in because the bad deposits are at the bottom of the jug-from sitting on the shelf for a time. The most important procedure is heating the flush oil to factor temp before filling. Preheat your oven to 350°f, it will save you some time. As a safety precaution use heat resistant tempered plastic to contain the oil during this process...metal containers will compromise the active properties of the flush application. We found that out the hard way.
@IchibanMoto9 жыл бұрын
+Branden Burnett I will keep an eye out for tempered heat resistant plastic. Might be a good excuse to attend one of those Tupperware parties with the fit birds

excuse the noob question but: is there a way to filter used oil? That is; filter all the dirt and gunk from the oil to get it back to it's original clean, clear state? I assume not else, I'd think everyone would be doing it, but why, it seems like this should be possible?
@IchibanMoto9 жыл бұрын
+CallMeBronco It's not just that the oil is dirty, it actually degrades. There is viscosity breakdown at a molecular level and repeated water condensation and burn off- a result of going from cold to operating temperature and back repeatedly , causing separation and sludge. Modern oil is much better and lasts longer , however bikes need more frequent oil changes as most run wet clutch friction plates that leave mico abrasive particles that accelerate wear. Oil filters typically only capture particles larger than 10-50 microns , depending on brand.
