I can't believe how easily you got that oil filter housing to come loose. I've been at it for half an hour and all I managed to do was to put a deep scratch into it.

It was a warm day which probably helped soften the plastic housing.

I never do the oil filter cap up super tight. I do it until starting to tighten and then about a 1/4 turn. I have never had a problem and find it easy to remove next time. When the garage did it I needed a chain wrench to move it. I was told off into the bargain! 20 years I have done the servicing. My feeling is the O-ring distorts if too tight. Doubtless we both were wrong and in between is best. The TDi oil filter is ideally located and makes little mess. BTW. If the TDi goes into limp mode check vacuum pipes. Often one has come off and often hidden.

A 3/8 socket for the oil filter costs about £5 - well worth it, easy to undo and you can use a torque wrench to retighten.

A moderate slope acounts for 50% of the high/low dipstick marks ( check before you change the oil ). Fill to the top then check on a level piece of ground. Don't move until engine has run for a minute to find it's true level ( let it stand 10 minutes also to settle ). Many say half way on the dipstick is ideal. My house if full pointing up the slope is half on level ground. I can use the slope as a reference to full. Never overfill. Be gentle if parked on a hill, that's the big deal. It's likely it's below miniumum on start. If you live on a hill go to maximum when level.

Depends on pickup pipe location too, so the dipstick may read low level, but the pickup could be further submerged
