Thanks so much! My biggest suggestion is make sure the timing belt is done every 100,000 miles. So if it’s close to 100k, 200k, etc get it done. It’s not cheap but is necessary. I love my truck

You’ve given me complete confidence that I can do this! So I went to Amazon and purchased everything on the list you provided, except for a Jack. Instead I purchased a pair of car ramps with a 6.5” rise. Wish me luck on my first oil change. And thankfully I’ve got the exact model and year vehicle, and this video to refer to! I can see me now, sliding beneath my Ridgeline doing my first ever oil change. I’m no mechanic, but it’s time to begin with the small stuff first! A tip for which I cannot take credit: wrap a 1 gallon plastic bag around and over the oil filter. It will catch the oil that otherwise goes everywhere you don't want it too.

Brother, I think all 5 quarts might be OK since 5w-20 is thin like water many say. It probably has the same oil pressure 5 quarts vs 4.5 quarts of 10w-30 that used to be the standard till about after 2010 where people got tired adding a quart 0w-20 every 1600 miles in new cars like subarus so the new turbo impreza changed the recommend to 5w-30 I don no Y they didn do the same for the naturally aspired models since I saw no difference in gas mileage unless I gave castrol a try 😳 to see wat work good 😉 This was in a j35 04 odyssey pilot Ridgeline. Pennzoil 5w-20 only got 16 mpg while the castrol gtx 5w-20 got 23 mpg due to polyol esters btw is a best type of group 5 synthetic esters 😊 But now with adding natural gas like pennz does aka from trash by products the GDI Hyundai formula seems different I don't know. So I use Castrol gtx high mileage 5w-20 even in a jeep cherokee 3.2 pentastar that was neck and neck with a cr-v k24 😂

Good job with your video sequence. It's pretty thorough. One of your commenters said don't lubricate the new gasket on the filter but that's always a good practice and it can't hurt anything. He was correct about not tightening the oil pan bolt Once you replace it always tighten it to the right torque spec. It would be good if you mentioned that in your video as well. Also your filter should be hand tightens so you shouldn't need a wrench to take it off and put it back on. Other than that great video.

Always use a new crush washer. Put a plastic bread bag over the filter after loosing slightly. Then unscrew filter. It will drop in the bag with no mess.

Your procedure to Jack the vehicle was really good as well. Sometimes it's hard to find the correct jack point under the engine frame to locate the lift jack. And the location is actually not a flat surface which makes it even more strange but it is the correct location. Good job

You don’t need to jack up the Ridgeline there’s plenty of room to reach underneath and unscrew the oil pan blot. Same as the oil filter more than enough room. Make sure the vehicle is level. Mechanuc shops use lifts and all vehicles are level.

One of your other commenters also mentioned don't use fram filters. I am on board with that as well. There are plenty of videos out there the show the fram filters are just pure junk. I go with wix or mobile one. Both of those have been tested and shown to be top of the line and pricing is good.

Really should recycle the filter too but most auto parts store around me don’t take the filters so I usually just keep them in a ziplock bag and the city I live in has a hazardous waste pickup day about 2 times a year and I’ll bring the filters there

It’s how it’s set up, it only leaks when taking off filter can. Wipe it up and you are good to go!

If you have high miles use a thicker oil. If your car says 5/20 go 5/30. Especially if you have a timing chain not a belt. High mileage oil has re conditioners that will help restore gaskets in the engine.

@@MCFIXIT a good way to tell a timing belt is on its way out is not only the every 100,000 but our temperature of the engine can go up then come down. The timing belt also spins the water pump. Always change the water pump when you change the timing belt. Most come in the timing belt kit.

Great point!!! Thanks for saying that. And yes, I would always doing the timing belt AND water pump. I should have mentioned that. They are literally the same job in my mind. It's a pain to doing the timing belt due to having to have it perfectly lined up or else you risk ruining an engine and the limited room for your hands and tools. It only make sense to me to do both at once. And yes, most of the time the timing belt kids have the water pump included.

Don’t forget a new crush washer every time I change the oil. One guy mentions you don’t have to put a little oil on the new oil gasket. Don’t listen to him you are right. Most people clean the oil filter insert area with a clean shop rag. So the filter does need the new oil around the oil filter.

Yes, they most likely have a tolerance of at least half a quart or maybe more. But I like to follow the recommend amounts of fluids. I do know a number of Honda engineers and they are pretty stick their personal vehicles like this and they will only ever put Honda fluids in their personal vehicles. I like Valvoline in mine and with a synthetic blend, lol.

KZbin Irv Gordan and his Volvo. He went over 3,000,000 miles on Castro GTX which is a synthetic blend oil. I also like Valvoline synthetic blend oil. Napa oils are blended by Valvoline. Walmart is always the cheapest for oils and filters. Walmart Super Tech is also excellent oil. It is blended by Warren distribution. Walmart has all the fancy numbers and letters as the big boys. Compare the back of the bottle/jug with any top brands. Don’t fall for the pretty colors fancy letters and endorsements. Walmart oil is about $16.00 for full synthetic in a five quart jug.

@@MCFIXIT the fluids yes Honda recommends only Honda fluids transmission fluid and rear differential fluid. You can use any motor oil you choose. 5/20 with API seal of approval and your fine. Walmart full synthetic

I disagree with that comment. Honda recommends 4.5 quarts then that's what you should put in. I have an empty oil container that I pour that half quart into. After enough oil changes you'll have enough for a fresh change. Stick with the manufacturer recommendations don't wing it. Your Honda is definitely worth it

Yes, you can do it but it's tight. I'd love to have one of those pits that the oil change places have or a lift. It would sure beat the laying on your back fixing things! For recording, you have to jack it up or you wouldn't be able to see anything.

@@MCFIXIT keep the vehicle level. Done mine many times no Jack’s work from the front. If you have problems with the oil filter coming off use channels locks. Put on hand tight only. Great job 😊

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't teach others what you aren't qualified to do. You had a solid teaching of where the pan plug is and the oil filter but beyond that you could run others astray... I see 5 significant issues with your teachings 1) no need to lube the filter gasket as unless one wipes the mating surface on the engine there is guaranteed to be more than adequate oil left there (different case if this was a rebuild with 1st install of filter) 2) no mention of verifying gasket came off with filter... it may not leak for several miles double gasketed but you can be sure that it will blow out before the next oil change likely causing a seized engine😟 3)never replace the oil drain plug without tightening it at the same time... it is simply too easy to forget about tightening it later and lose it a few miles down the road again a seized engine 😮‍💨4) always start the engine briefly and run at an idle to refill the drained oil passages and filter, then recheck the oil level and look for leaks (especially at the oil filter)... failure to do this step will A) start you out below the full mark (it's nice to know how much oil you rig is using and not have to guess) B)if the gasket doesn't mate well (it happens) then you could be dribbling oil out... a moment of checking is worth much more than a pound of cure a few miles down the road... 5) Lastly no mention of the reset sequence for the oil life indicator which makes me think you ignore your warnings on your IC... no bueno🤨

Easy access. Turn your steering wheel all the way to the right. Lay on your back in front of the truck with your left hand grabbing the filter. Turn counter clockwise. Very simple
