Matt, You need to re-check your oil level again AFTER start up. Oil level will drop on the dipstick due to the oil filter being filled after start-up. Then recheck for leaks again. You did good for the first oil change.

I highly recommend buying and wearing gloves for oil changes. I'm talking about the cheap throw away gloves from NAPA. I have learned to use a long handle 1-inch socket wrench to loosen the drain plug, a plug that for some reason is over-tightened from my local Ford dealership.

I just wanted to say I'm a fan of your videos just wanted to give pointer to you for future oil changes and that is to "prime" (fill with fresh oil) the oil filter because it is a Eccoboost(turbo) you want to be sure not to starve it of oil that can destroy the turbo. just thought you should know
@stuartharvey76777 жыл бұрын
you should run the car till its hot first then drain the oil so the oil is thinner and drains faster and always change your drain plug other wise good informative vid good job for a first time knowing the correct way to do it as hand tight filter and little bit of oil on the seal helps the seal stay sealed but you should check the oil when the car is flat
@lukesdoings71509 жыл бұрын
I just changed the oil on my GF's ecoStang for the first time last week. I have to say that it was the absolute easiest oil change I've ever done. Ford finally put an oil filter in a place you can grab it and remove it without slobbering oil all over. I've had over 10 different cars and trucks in my family and this by far was the easiest. BTW, my oil plug wasn't as tight as Suburuwrxfan's. So, I'm guessing the service tech that changed his oil previously, must have over tightened it quite a bit. BTW even if you hand tighten an oil filter it will be significantly tighter when you try to remove it. The rubber gasket expands and creates more resistance. Also, on the Ecoboost Mustang, if you put the spec oil capacity of 5.7qts, it will NOT measure to the top hashmark of the dipstick. The oil filter will absorb some. The owner's manual will tell you not to ad oil between oil changes unless the level on the dipstick is down to the "ADD" hashmark. I filled it up to the top hashmark anyway just because I hate having a partial quart of oil sitting around the garage. Just don't over fill (common info here, I know). Good video!

Just knowing how she performs from when I first bought her compared to now, after all the money n work I've put in...that's satisfaction enough for me, and the fact that I didn't pay a mechanic to do any of it either is even more so. When changing the oil on my Abarth 500 I never have to go under the car. I drain the oil with an extractor and the paper oil filter is easily accessed near the top of the engine by removing a plastic cap. I'm also a fan of Pennzoil. 5W40 (Euro-Oil) is stupid hard to find in stores and Pennzoil is usually all I have to choose from. It still looks good after many miles and I don't burn off any oil compared to other brands. Changing your oil yourself is great because unfortunately most service departments are pretty reckless when driving around your car. I know too many people including myself who has had a car damaged under service care. If you want something done right... DIY. Great video!

Just a tip. When u check the oil after u put it in you need to make sure your vehicle is flat/level. They way you checked it on the ramps gives a false reading and is incorrect. And now here's an instruction for a good oil change.... - take your car for a quick spin around the block so that the oil is warm but not hot (warm oil flows more easily than cold oil) - put a magnet in the oil pan!!! - let the oil drain, then clean everything around there, put new bolt in - check if any metal cuttings are sticking to the magnet!!! - remove the oil filter, then clean everything around there, keep an eye on where the O-ring sits - put the O-ring for the new filter on the exact same spot after lubricating it a bit with oil - put the new oil filter in - fill in the new oil (as much as the manual says) - roll down your car to a flat surface - start up the engine and let it run for about a minute (the new oil filter is absorbing about 1/2 liter of oil) - check the dip stick - if needed fill in more oil until it reaches the middle marker you're welcome
@orion37068 жыл бұрын
I had an oil pan like that and ended up buying a different one because of the size of the opening. I got a different one that has a shallow catch pan, but much bigger in area, that drains into an area below. Walmart sells them for around $10.00. MUCH cleaner for the driveway.

Here's a good tip: always make sure that the gasket from the old oil filter is not stuck on the car. A few years ago, a dealership changed the oil in my car, but apparently the old oil filter's gasket was stuck on and it ended up being double-gasketed. The next day, I was driving along and started hearing noise from the engine. Right after that, I noticed my oil pressure light was starting to blink pretty fast. As soon as I pulled over and popped the hood, I found oil dripping and all over the place. Had it towed and they fixed the problem. I'm glad they gave me a loaner, but I was not happy that they screwed up.
@RomeoTudose8 жыл бұрын
Measuring the oil level in a correct way requires the car to be also leveled. It's not a big difference I think but since this is a DYI ... let's add it to the parameter list.

Overall good video but some extra steps Matt forgot for people who are planning to change their oil: - Prefill your oil filter (if it is the type used in this video). Also, no need to snug the filter up with a tool, just do it by hand because the filter will tighten itself over time. - To avoid leaks, replace your drain plug crush washer. - Use gloves, oil can cause cancer
@albert159869 жыл бұрын
Good DIY, but for things like this you would want to make sure you do your HW before doing the video, left out important details like having the engine warm before draining, and changing the drain plug washer if the car use one. You will want all the oil deposits to be loose before you drain it other wish they will stay stock to the walls or the oil pan and they will contaminate you fresh oil.
@Tat2Dragons9 жыл бұрын
I agree, plus your oil will drain out much faster.
@falkentires559 жыл бұрын
Handy tip for keeping your hands clean, put pressure on the drain plug as you pull it out keeping it sealed via the threads, until it is fully loose, then quickly pull it off. I do it every time, and I usually end up with almost no oil on my hands.
@FatGuysRedemption5 жыл бұрын
Since the filter is installed upright, you should fill the new filter with fresh oil before installing it. That way, the engine won't be starved of oil on startup as long as it would with an empty filter.
