@@VANFLIPPINGTASTIC I wonder if you can compare this to electricity usage? I used the numbers supplied by the mfgr, which seem to agree with yours, and found that the "2kw" model used (US) $0.158 per kwh and the 5kw used $0.126 per kwh. My local cost for diesel averages $5/gal. Our local utility charges $0.14kwh. I realize electricity is somewhere around quadruple the cost in Europe right now, and that you can reduce the fuel cost by mixing used oils with the diesel, and that makes the economics quite variable. Interesting video, thanks.

[From the UK, November 2022] Thanks for these videos sir! These heaters are the dog's bollox - they really are. I come from having fitted an Eberspächer Airtronic D2 in my Landrover Defender 110 (2002 plate), in 2002 - & it was about £2k then, fitted. For those who wonder - these 'cheap Chinese' heaters are 𝘯𝘰𝘵 'theft' (the way Honda clone engines are) - but are a result of the original patents by Eberspächer & Webasto expiring. It turns out further that this is Karma on them - as apparently they colluded to price-fix & keep these amazing devices very expensive. Anything to get word out about how fantastic these things are - is a great service! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

Thanks for the pin code. You gave me the idea to try this. Start machine, go into settings 1688, and adjust first setting the min hertz (.8) then ok. Next set high hertz by lowering it (starts at 5000 or so) and listen for pump slow down to slowest click rate, mine went lowest at 4.0 hertz. hit ok set lowest fan speed and highest fan speed available. Then in normal mode, lower temp or (check hertz setting) mine falsely reads 1.2 hertz, because I counted 72 clicks per minute and that works out to .81 hertz. I found out most pumps of this type deliver .022 litres per click. So now my 5k heater is now only a 4k heater but who cares, the 900 watts .8 hertz makes is plenty for my needs and bonus should be 15 hours and 47 mins per litre. I would like to see this experiment on 100 mil it should get 1hr 34 mins.

Great test and accurate too. I have similar heater in a 7+ meter motorhome. Usage is inline with your results. I run on 5+ hz to warm up and then at 3hz if very cold while up, then on low overnight. A huge saving compared to gas heating and uses a fraction of the power, which is important when off grid. Also run on kerosene same as my home heating ,so get in bulk (cheaper). It burns cleaner though slightly less BTU, but you would not notice. The fuel is stored outside the motorhome in 15lts container, as it stinks 🦨 more than diesel. Thanks for you great video.

Insulate your shop and you would be toasty. Thanks for the test. It saves me the bother... when I went off grid in 1997 I used a generator to charge the batteries about every ten days as the solar setup could not keep up in wintertime. I added fuel to the generator in 1 gallon increments and had a timer plugged into the generator. I also kept a watt meter in line and tried to maximize its use by doing laundry and charging all my tools, etc etc. I got the diesel use to 1 quart per hour which was about half what I was told I would use. When you measure something you actually reduce your usage. Most people are clueless and waste double or triple what they actually need. Count me as a new subscriber.... Adios.

Great vid, thanks for sharing. A 2000w fan heater is currently costing 1p per min to run at 28p per KW hour., ie: 60p per hour, and this heater is costing give or take, 20p per hour, in alpine mode, possibly not quite so warm as a fan heater, but not that far off. and only 23p per hour on number 1 setting. ( on red diesel at £1.40 a litre ) So glad I have just last week, bought a diesel heater for my shed, before they started to sky rocket, now that winter is biting ,plus the cost of fuel rocketing as well of course. Thanks for the great review from Tasmania, Australia. Just checked the diesel prices here and the local servo I use has it at 231.9 cents a litre for standard diesel and 233.9 cents for a litre of premium diesel. According to Google that's 1.30 pounds sterling and 1.31 respectively. I have never bought diesel but there's an additional six cents a litre off petrol at the servo for regular customers so I assume that would apply to the diesel too.

Look on your pump and see what it's pump volume per stroke is. 5kw heater is generally 0.022ml per stroke. So running at low and around 1.6hz you will be using :- 0.022 x 1.6hz x 60 x 60 = 126.72 ml / hour. Add your actual values for pump and Hz pump is running at and you have the fuel used. 👍

Interesting vid 👍 One thing, alpine mode us for use at altitude where the air is thinner, the idea being the heater would run rich with less air and the usuall amount of fuel being injected, messing with mixture at low altitude csn cause the unit to soot up 🤔 although diesel has a wide stoichiometric band going too far outside the band will cause sooting of the burn chamber, it the reason a lot of users run the unit flat out once a month to burn out the soot 👍

@@VANFLIPPINGTASTIC that's what i recommend to peeps who's heater I've serviced (due to sooting up) but wether you just use up the diesel you saved I'm not sure 🤔 I'm certainly no guru I've only installed and fixed 20 odd, it's just what I've surmised over the last 2 years or so, more expensive units have better control algorithms, cheaper ones really need a good old blast out occasionally, just like modern diesel cars need ragging every now and then to clear the soot out 👍 Your doing a geat job helping peeps understand these things 😎 keep it up chap 👍

I run mine for a good while on alpine but there was an odd smell and I did end up with a burnt out burner chamber ,now wether it was caused by alpine mode I don't know ,good video , only thing I would add if its -10 outside in a large Motor home you would likely need the heater on full to keep up ,so the setting level its relative to temp 👍

@@VANFLIPPINGTASTIC don't worry about it, think about it logically. Apline mode is because it would be running too rich at altitude. You are making it run lean and getting less heat but it will all be burning. Its the other way round you have to worry about.. running it rich at altitude. Mixed reports on burning the soot out but the consensus seems to be that it doesn't work

as stated.. awesome video on fuel usage regardless of the slight unknown on your part. . alpine mode is high altitude mode , this leans out the pulse (fuel mixture) to account for the less dense lower oxygen air.. this at sea level will destroy your burn chamber and screens over time. Alpine mode should not be activated unless you are over 3500/4000 ASL. As far as running the machine full boar, it will clean some sooty deposits in the chamber but not the screen in the back of the chamber where the hard deposits build up. It is better to run the proper mixture to avoid this.. 10 years running and servicing these amazong tools of heat. you cant clean soot with a map gas torch or even acetalyne\oxygen sometimes , you wont do it with a hot chamer'. there are a couple groups on facebok if you want more info on tuning these for best efficiency. cheers

Just after watching this I set mine to alpine, it instantly lost 28 degrees off the burner temperature on the h3 which mine was running at, upped it to h6 and the temperature kept dropping, not enough fuel for the fan speed,at the sea level settings, switched off the alpine setting and the temperature shot back up, having run these heaters for the last 3 years, what is critical for long term use is to set the heater to give optimum heat at low settings, but that heater, like my current unit doesn't allow for the settings to be changed, not without a change of motherboard and controller, and that should restore my fuel usage to my last heater 👍

Just for a ballpark figure, there is about 10 kw of energy per liter of diesel. From your results it looks like about half of the energy content is going to the exhaust. A heat exchanger could recover some of this heat, but would complicate everything and may lead to other reliability problems. I expect to have one of these 5 kw heaters installed in a simi-insulated barn soon, so iI might experiment with my system.

No wonder the factories install coolant heaters and radiant heaters to run off of a diesel heater, instead of warming up air and circulating it around. It's simply not efficient enough. Too much disappears through the exhaust. I'd recommend getting a kit from "bobil heater". They have water heater kits, so you can utillize the energy gathered from the heated water too.

Thanks for the video... you can put a code in to change the pump settings to 0.8 beats per second as opposed to the 1.4 beats per second which is the lowest setting H 1 .. only problem is after a long while of running it on this 0.8 setting it tends to carbon up inside and down the exhaust pipe .. because it's not quite hot enough to burn of the carbon .. I would imagine this will happen if you use it on alpine mode continuously.. might be a good idea to crank it up for half an hour every now and again to burn the carbon out.. also maybe trying out heating oil instead of red diesel. As it's about £0.75 per litre just now. There is a bit more energy in it too.. cheers

one thing you can try to increase the flame temperature to prevent soot build up while running on low is to obstruct the air inlet. i created a cylindrical jacket of tape around the outside of the air inlet filter that i can slide up and down to expose more or less inlet holes. i know many diy videos say never obstruct the air inlet, but you can test it yourself using the case temperature reported by the heater and a separate CO meter. partially blocking the air inlet caused the case temperature to increase and brought my exhaust CO from 80-100ppm down to 0ppm indicating i was getting more complete combustion.

@@jm47 if you obstructing the air inlet, you are puttig unnecessary stress to motor that drives fans, so motor will last less. There are controllers that can be set up correctly by changing fuel rate in Hz and RPM of motor, that will give you leaner mixture and less carbon builtup.

The only thing that matters is pump pulses per secon(hz) each pulse delivers a dose of 0.022ml. Pulses per second x60 x 60 x0.022 gives you ml per hour. divide 1000/ml per hour to get runtime per litre. You can use an app to accurately measure pump frequency.
