How to change the Catalytic Converter and 02 Sensor on a '03‐'07 Nissan Murano 3.5L
Getting poor gas milage? I was, I could see the O2 sensors were beginning to fail and I went ahead and changed all four sensors out along with both Catalytic Converters. This was Preventive Maintenance on my end.
Update: After doing this change I went from 15/16 mpg and I'm now getting mid 20 mpg running around town.

Did your catalytic converters come with all new bolts or did you have to use some of the old ones?

How long did this take? I see you have a lift for your car, but without one I’m guessing this will take a lot longer?

If you don't have a lift, I would say 4 to five hours. I had a couple of bolts break, so, it took me an hour just to try to extract and eventually drilled them out.

Hey could use your help down in Florida if you get this way lol. I have an '03 as well and right now I'm getting rough idle at lights/stop. It will drive fine for about the first hour or so of continuous driving but then will start to rough idle like it's going to shut off when at a light or stop sign. I've cleaned the throttle body, and the MAF sensor and it worked ok for a few days and came back. I am getting P0420/P0430 codes which I've had for about 2 years now off and on. No sensor codes have popped up just the Cat codes.

That's the codes for Cat Converters. When you floor it, does it bog down and make a low drone sound, and have little to no power? Also when was your last spark plug and coilpack change?

@@BentOaksGarage It drives well for about an hour but then it starts huffing and puffing. It will stutter and shake like it's going to cut off when idle and then when I do accelerate it takes a while to go and will jerk and jump the rest of drive until I turn it off. I did a coil/spark plug/gasket change (tune up) last summer. I have had the Cat codes on and off for 2 years, I was just wondering if the cats going bad could cause this or is it something else. I've been aware of the lack in gas mileage as well. Mine does about 15mpg in town when it used to do 20 and high 20's on the highway.

@@RonnRicco when I did that Murano I was getting about 16 and after cat change it want up to 19.5. You can always do a test before buying new ones (not legal) but take the old ones off and punch the guts out of them. A long breaker bar and a 5 pound sledge works great (in theory) but if the car runs great afterwords, then you know it was the catalytic Converters and you can replace them at that point. Lot of work just to test 😉

@@BentOaksGarage Yes, I saw your 7 hour quote lol. I'm just trying to avoid taking it to a shop cause I haven't found one with just generally positive reviews but I will have to cave in to find out what the issue really is. BTW how much of a charge am I looking at just to replace my cats?

There is one thing you can try, I know I'll catch a lot of slack for saying this but dump a gallon of lacquer thinner in a half tank of gas, run it at highway speeds for an hour and around town till its almost empty. Clear the codes and refill with gas. This has worked for me with a Nissan Altima in the past. You can also youtube it, there are videos out there of people doing this, I just dont post stuff like that. All said and done it should help remove the p0420 light.

No, it's able to be removed with both in place.
