Thank you so much for putting this information on KZbin. I'm a 69 year old widow who is trying to get my lawn mower to start. I put in fresh gas and oil but nothing happened. My next step is to put in a new spark plug. But I didn't have a clue how to do it. Your video was very informative and took some of my fear away. I have no one to maintain my lawn mower. That was always my husband's job, but he passed away last year. I am on a fixed income and I have to be smart with my money, so I'm not interested in hiring a lawn service. I just hope that my lawn mower starts after I put in a new spark plug and air filter. Thanks again for making this job a little easier. (I guess I'm lucky to still have my husband's big tool box, on wheels. It's got all kinds of ratchets and sockets, all placed neatly in their own spots.)

These videos make such repairs look so easy. Recently the boot's been coming unplugged from our lawn mower. Someone said that the spark plug cap may be gone. I'm not sure if we have the necessary wrench. My dad usually handled such matters. He passed away 2 years ago. We recently got work done on all our mowers. Our yard's huge!

Whoa i did it with an spark plug tool which was too short to really turn , Yes i could use a longer extension , it took me like 30 minutes to get it on right , I could had used another inch, Good Grief, Thanks for the video. I did it right . Amen , single woman in a house with a lawn to mow

Remove the old spark plug. It will have a make and part number on it. Take it to a local auto parts or lawnmower dealer and have them sell you a new plug. They should also be able to gap the plug for you if it needs it.

To remove the spark plug on my Briggs&Stratton lawnmower I needed a 5/8" inch wrench, not 13/16.

If the spark plug boot will slide off the connector, you can take some pliers and carefully squeeze the metal connector a bit so it stays on the spark plug. If the boot won't slide off the connector you can use needle nose pliers and compress the connector a little bit. Careful here and just do a little at a time, don't compress too much or the connector won't go on the spark plug. Thanks for the comments.

One more thing to check here, make sure the oil level is in the correct range. A lot of newer mowers have a low oil shut down, that is if the engine oil level is too low the mower will shut down. Check the oil level to make sure this isn't the problem.

If a new spark plug doesn't help you might want to check the settling bowl on the fuel to make sure it isn't restricting gas flow.

1316" deep socket and extension for the ratcheting wrench. Plug is slightly tilted to the left of the motor face... not square to it

You can buy a spark plug socket for the size of spark plug you have, or if you have a deep socket set use one of those sockets for changing the spark plug. If you buy a spark plug socket take your plug with you and try it in the socket to make sure you get the right size. The spark plug socket is probably around 3/4" or 13/16" in size. If you don't have an extension for the ratchet, I would pick up one of those also.

The square post (drive) on the ratchet that accepts sockets will be 3/8" wide for a 3/8 ratchet and 1/2" wide for a 1/2 ratchet. A 1/2" drive ratchet is more of a heavy duty ratchet, I would guess you have a 3/8.

I left my lawnmower on its side for about 10mins and oil spilled out everywhere.. is the sparkplug bad now too? The lawnmower is only about a year old.

Check the oil level and then try to start the lawnmower. If it won't start pull the spark plug out and check if the electrode is wet. If it is clean it up, dry it off, and try starting the mower again.

How to remove a metal cap from a spark plug to remove it.

Twist and bend the boot back and forth while pulling up. If that doesn't work you may need to try a flat blade screwdriver to pry the boot off.

What kind of spark plug ? and what kind of oil do you recommend for a oil change

Owner's manual or Honda dealer can give you the right spark plug. I believe 5w-30 oil is recommended for this mower.

Try twisting the spark plug boot back & forth as you pull up. If that doesn't work you may have to try pliers and a screwdriver but you risk damaging the wire coil inside the boot.
