How to change the PCM/Computer in a PT Cruiser

This is a How To Video on how to replace a PCM/Computer in a 2005 Chrysler P.T Cruiser.
Remember that the PCM needs to be programmed. You can get them Pr-Programed from a shop with a Chrysler Perscription, OR you can use the website we had gotten ours at: autocomputerperformance.com/ch...
This may or may not work for other models of P.T. Cruisers. Please use Caution.

UPDATE: The PT is still going strong, 202,000 miles and running well. We had to change the PCM a second time, but it was a bad PCM and under warranty. Our original problem code were O2 sensors p0031,p0037. Car would stutter and stall at idle. So far so good after changing out the PCM.

You're actually supposed to remove the negative terminal from the battery and let it sit for at least an hour so that they keep alive memory will go to sleep so that there is no communication before you disconnect the computer.

You got the screws backwards the longer pointed screws are for mounting the bracket to the ecu and the short bolts mount the bracket to the firewall.

I know this is a year old but was it the heaters for the o2 sensor code p0031,p0037. The ecm's are common to bad on the pt cruisers. Also is the ecm still working/

That PCM has to be programmed unless you got it pre-programm from a shop with a chrysler subscription..

Hello, I have heard that only a dealer ship can program the pcm for a cars vin number. How did you get it preprogrammed without dealership?

Most dealerships want you to exclusively use their services. You can use 3rd party auto techs, We used the website listed in the Description. autocomputerperformance.com/ after talking with them you just give them the VIN number, Make/Model & PCM code (on the dashboard ) which on certain models you flash the key a certain number of times. I don't remember the exact error code number. But I remember getting errors for the Oxygen Sensor even though we had all three sensors replaced. along with the stuttering and the complete shut off while idling. Hope that helps

I have a 2006 PT Cruiser and consistently had this issue for a while. All the mechanics said to replace PCM. However this is not necessary. I discovered plug 4 on the TCM had a damaged red secure clip, and the plug was loose. I sprayed contact cleaner on the pins and ziptied it in and have recently replaced the plugs on all 4 connections by using some used ones from a salvage yard and soldering the new plugs on and wrapping in electrical wire tubing conduit and electrical tape. Issue is now gone. An alternative would be to simply have the PCM wiring harness replaced at the shop, but I was aiming for low cost and I have the repair skill.

No, when we bought the PCM we had it pre-programed to our EIN number the same as the keys. when you turn it on the first time we had to start the ignition a couple of times and wait a few 'minutes while the PCM updated to the car. No need to change keys. :)

I don't remember the name of the company we got it from now, but googled Pre programmed PCM and picked a good rated company. Worked perfectly. It was remanufactured, and we had to send back the old one for a cheaper price.

I went to the dealer and asked for the part number ( pcm ) and went on eBay to search for it , there's a lot for sale , some even reprogramed to your car's Vin number for plug and play , very easy to swap it out , save me ton of money ..

No Pliers!!! Never use pliers to disconnet battery, and disconnect negative, NOT positive. You left those PCM plugs very lose, and did not lock them,.....will have problems!!!The way you connect that positive battery connection....with pliers,....I was just waiting it to blow up!!??? You touch negative several times with your pliers??????, that is the reason, you disconnect negative, NOT positive !!! And use correct wrench/tools!!!!
