Before attempting to replace the multi-function turn-signal switch in my 2005 PT Cruiser, I watched several videos. This ChrisFix video was by far the most accurate, easiest to understand and made the job simple, not complex and I completed it in under an hour. The dealer wanted $638+ to replace the switch and I bought one online for $65+. It was this video that led me to tackle this job myself and saved over $500.

Hi Chris, I do see that this video is very old but if by chance you are still reading messages, I would like to thank you for this video because it's the best one out there. You were precise, you explained everything, you have a gentle voice, and this 62-year-old woman just fixed her own damn car! When I got done I had no signals or cigarette lighter or power port. So if that happens to anybody else it's not uncommon for fuses to blow when you're messing with the electrical system. Number 15 fuse on the inside fuse box for wipers and number 20 fuse in the engine fuse box for power ports/cig lighter. AND, the guy who lives here told me to remove the POSITIVE cable, so thanks so much for starting with removing the negative cable! Now i just need a brake light and im good to go. Thanks again!
@blueplasma558924 күн бұрын
Removing the negative/ black cable is common practice instead of the red cable to reduce the chance of sparks to ignite the battery fumes or touching a metal part with your wrench. Go Forward and Conquer!
@MarioDallaRiva8 жыл бұрын
Safety related suggestion for your viewers that are new to auto repairs: it's a good idea not to place wrenches between the battery posts to avoid a direct short. I know someone that bridged the battery posts with a wrench while wearing a ring on his finger. He ended up losing the finger. Good idea to remove rings too actually when working on the car. Great videos you produce, btw. Tons of excellent information. Keep 'em coming 👍🏻

I replaced one of these switches years ago on a different PT and watched another video that was not nearly as good as this one. Now I'm back to replacing this on my new/old PT GT. Chris I thank you for your great videos. One of the things I do when I clean a battery is put the red and green felt washers under the connectors. I have found it really slows down the battery acid billed up on the terminals. they are usually only a couple of bucks and they also aid in positive and negative pole identification at a glance. I have learned a lot from you and thank you for making it simple enough for non mechanics.

Good job, as always. One thing. It's a good idea to check for any drain after the new stalk is installed. The battery was exposed so it would have only taken a minute. This is 45 years in the electronic telephone business talking and I more than once installed bad "new" plugs. It only took me a few screw-ups to learn.

Thanks man! How many miles on the car? You might consider a flush (check out "How to: Flush and Change the Coolant in Your Car" video). Also where do you live and how much do you need to top it off? I might just add some water instead of coolant, especially if you dont know what coolant it is. I know on my Vette it is Dexcool and that cannot be mixed or it creates sludge.

Thanks for this video. I recently got a used cruiser that had been neglected. Changing out this switch was easier than changing the headlight bulbs. Thanks again! You saved me some money!
@poundinsound6 жыл бұрын
was you headlights not turning on?
@bilzarkz6 жыл бұрын
Attaturk, I’m not sure if the headlights worked or not since the bulbs were bad and I didn’t change them until I put the new switch in. I assumed that the fog lights were stuck on since the green indicator light on the dash was continuously lit. If I pushed the knob in it would go out. When I released the knob it would come back on even in the “off” position. The connection wires for the fog lights were also dangling from the bumper so I figured the previous owner just unplugged them. After researching some of the forums through google and videos through KZbin I realized it was probably the switch.

I watched it, ordered the "multifunction switch" from Amazon.com and with Prime shipping it was here in less than 48 hours at a cost of $60.00. I followed you expert directions and the time from negative battery terminal disconnect all the way through change out, testing and reassembly...including putting the tools away I had invested 20 and 1/2 minutes...and I saved AT LEAST $250. All is working again from fog lamps to turn indicators to 4-way flashers. I guess after 13 years...electrical stuff just wears out.

Great video - very clear. One thing to keep in mind with ANY Chrysler (probably other makes as well) whenever you are replacing electrical parts, always use genuine MOPAR parts. It seems that for electronics after-market parts are not as reliable. I have heard this from many mechanics and it seems in my experience to be a reliable concern. I now you pay a bit more but it is worth it, rather than replace the same part multiple times.

I didnt use a mopar part for the multifunction switch because they designed it poorly which is why it shorts out in the first place.

Omg your video was so great and helpful..loved it..I've been having all the usual problems that went along with my switch..even to it to the dealer and was telling them about my issues and at the time all they found was a exploded tail light. .so they figured that was the problem but I knew it wasn't..ordered the part from online and installed it myself..so simple..thanks again for the easy step by step☆★
