Chris, cannot thank you enough! Your instructions were perfect....bought the switch for 60 bucks from a local parts store, then installed it myself in less than 30 minutes. Cheapest price I found locally to fix it was $200....so many thanks for saving me $140!

Before attempting to replace the multi-function turn-signal switch in my 2005 PT Cruiser, I watched several videos. This ChrisFix video was by far the most accurate, easiest to understand and made the job simple, not complex and I completed it in under an hour. The dealer wanted $638+ to replace the switch and I bought one online for $65+. It was this video that led me to tackle this job myself and saved over $500.

Hi Chris, I do see that this video is very old but if by chance you are still reading messages, I would like to thank you for this video because it's the best one out there. You were precise, you explained everything, you have a gentle voice, and this 62-year-old woman just fixed her own damn car! When I got done I had no signals or cigarette lighter or power port. So if that happens to anybody else it's not uncommon for fuses to blow when you're messing with the electrical system. Number 15 fuse on the inside fuse box for wipers and number 20 fuse in the engine fuse box for power ports/cig lighter. AND, the guy who lives here told me to remove the POSITIVE cable, so thanks so much for starting with removing the negative cable! Now i just need a brake light and im good to go. Thanks again!
@blueplasma5589
@blueplasma5589 24 күн бұрын
Removing the negative/ black cable is common practice instead of the red cable to reduce the chance of sparks to ignite the battery fumes or touching a metal part with your wrench. Go Forward and Conquer!

Safety related suggestion for your viewers that are new to auto repairs: it's a good idea not to place wrenches between the battery posts to avoid a direct short. I know someone that bridged the battery posts with a wrench while wearing a ring on his finger. He ended up losing the finger. Good idea to remove rings too actually when working on the car. Great videos you produce, btw. Tons of excellent information. Keep 'em coming 👍🏻

Thank You!!!!! Great job of explaining and showing how to change the multifunction switch. After watching your video a couple of times. I felt it was something I could do. I did however play the video, paused it while I did one step came back to the video played it again for the next step and it was done before I knew it! I'm a 61 year old grandma that is not the least bit car repair savvy but thanks to you my car now has low beams and, high beams (neither was working before changing the switch). Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and skills.

Great video and very helpful! One thing I was surprised about was that you didn't do a final parasitic draw test. You could have done this just before connecting up the (-) battery terminal. Who knows? You might have another issue with parasitic draw!

Thank YOU Chris for all the awesome videos. I have a 2002 PT Cruiser Limited. Never thought of buying one of these but my neighbors widow wanted me to take it for a grandkid. Neighbor paid cash and ordered it 20 years ago. Kept it garaged its entire life. The grandkids dont like it, and it's that lovely Pearl Taupe! I really have come to like the car. I am using your scratch fix tips to fix a few scratches. I so enjoy the car now that I'm looking for a 2003 GT manual so I can tune it! All your videos are the best, so detailed! I'm having the grandaughter watch your videos as part of learning to drive. I told her if she cant change the oil, flat tire and plugs in the PT then shes not going to have a car. Wow did she get interested in the PT then! Thanks for all your work!!!

This video is excellent in showing closeup detail and providing explanations. I replaced one of these switches years ago on a different PT and watched another video that was not nearly as good as this one. Now I'm back to replacing this on my new/old PT GT. The only thing I would add is that while you are waiting to get the switch you should probably remove the fuse for the fog lights. That could save your battery.

Chris I thank you for your great videos. One of the things I do when I clean a battery is put the red and green felt washers under the connectors. I have found it really slows down the battery acid billed up on the terminals. they are usually only a couple of bucks and they also aid in positive and negative pole identification at a glance. I have learned a lot from you and thank you for making it simple enough for non mechanics.

Yea, there should be a relay somewhere (under the hood is a fuse box, check the owners manual to see where the relay is. You should hear a click when you turn the fog lights on if it is working.

Good job, as always. One thing. It's a good idea to check for any drain after the new stalk is installed. The battery was exposed so it would have only taken a minute. This is 45 years in the electronic telephone business talking and I more than once installed bad "new" plugs. It only took me a few screw-ups to learn.

Thanks man! How many miles on the car? You might consider a flush (check out "How to: Flush and Change the Coolant in Your Car" video). Also where do you live and how much do you need to top it off? I might just add some water instead of coolant, especially if you dont know what coolant it is. I know on my Vette it is Dexcool and that cannot be mixed or it creates sludge.

Hi Chris Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. If you remember I had a problem with all my warning lights would come on the go off and the gauges would go berserk then go Ok on my 06 PT. Played with the fuse control bus and worked for a while but came back. So about a month or more ago I replaced the ignition switch and so far so good. Of course I broke the pin on the lock assembly but only lost the chime when the key is in with door open. Promised I would update you. Mike

Honestly just add water. It doesnt get below freezing there does it (even if it does, a little water wont hurt)? Water cools the engine better anyhow. It's not that low either because you still have coolant in the reservoir.

@bilzarkz
@bilzarkz 6 жыл бұрын
Attaturk, I’m not sure if the headlights worked or not since the bulbs were bad and I didn’t change them until I put the new switch in. I assumed that the fog lights were stuck on since the green indicator light on the dash was continuously lit. If I pushed the knob in it would go out. When I released the knob it would come back on even in the “off” position. The connection wires for the fog lights were also dangling from the bumper so I figured the previous owner just unplugged them. After researching some of the forums through google and videos through KZbin I realized it was probably the switch.

Thanks for the video. My PT had a short in this switch that kept killing my battery. When I shut the drivers door the driving lights would come on. Bought the new part online for 75.00 and after watching your video I changed the part out in 20 min.

Since the original diagnosis was on the multi-meter, It would've been cool to show the amp draw comparison on the multi-meter before and after the part change.... I absolutely love your videos, and I'm definitely a fan...#KeepUpTheGreatWork

Your channel is an incredible help for me. Thank you so much for patiently explaining details for repairs to what would be complex to non/mechanics like me. I hope you make a profit from ChrisFix merchandise - I”m definitely buying something to support you.

ChrisFix: Thanks for the video. It was top notch and right on. I watched it, ordered the "multifunction switch" from Amazon.com and with Prime shipping it was here in less than 48 hours at a cost of $60.00. I followed you expert directions and the time from negative battery terminal disconnect all the way through change out, testing and reassembly...including putting the tools away I had invested 20 and 1/2 minutes...and I saved AT LEAST $250. All is working again from fog lamps to turn indicators to 4-way flashers. I guess after 13 years...electrical stuff just wears out.

Very helpful thank you so much for a very well presented vid, it would have been nice to have shown that the amps drain had all but gone, or show what was left being drawn. I really wish I had seen this before I got rid of my old motor. had a big drain problem and garage would only say replace the battery (already tested good, and only 3 months old) I am disabled and on a low budget, it is so great to see people like you putting in the time and effort, top marks....

Great video - very clear. One thing to keep in mind with ANY Chrysler (probably other makes as well) whenever you are replacing electrical parts, always use genuine MOPAR parts. It seems that for electronics after-market parts are not as reliable. I have heard this from many mechanics and it seems in my experience to be a reliable concern. I now you pay a bit more but it is worth it, rather than replace the same part multiple times.

I didnt use a mopar part for the multifunction switch because they designed it poorly which is why it shorts out in the first place.

Omg your video was so great and helpful..loved it..I've been having all the usual problems that went along with my switch..even to it to the dealer and was telling them about my issues and at the time all they found was a exploded tail light. .so they figured that was the problem but I knew it wasn't..ordered the part from online and installed it myself..so simple..thanks again for the easy step by step☆★
