Hey Scotty, I am a retired Ford International Field Service engineer. (1969-2016) Which just means Ford has sent me all over the world to repair cars and trucks the no one in country could repair, or to find the root cause of issues plaguing a certain component or model. I love watching your videos and agree with all most all of your opinions. I like that you stress verifying the basics before checking the electronic systems. Almost all of the issues I have solved were done by checking the basics first. Most techs check for codes and start replacing parts starting with the first code and ending with the electronic module or modules and the issue is still present after breaking the bank and wasting a lot of saleable time.

Well said.lucky you can retire and get out .as a mechanic myself(still have few years yet). There's no more thought process it's gone.they grab a laptop or scanner. Look for hours into the screen. Waiting for an answer. The basic mechanical knowledge is not there. Actually sometimes my job is easy. All the parts changers have changed all the not failed parts.then I'm asked to finish it.i tell them where to look.or what the problem is. It goes in 1 ear out the other. I let the boss tell customers why we changed unnecessary parts.

Mom has a 08 she was given brand new. It's been a great car for her and no major problems yet. I have a 95 Neon my lil sister bought brand new after I told her what options to get. It has 185k on it now on the original engine. I got it in 05 and I have replaced the timing belt and water pump at 155k, the rear main at 165k, and the front brakes a few years ago. It is easier to work on than the pt due to more room but they drive pretty similar through the pt is a bit smoother running because of the balance shafts and smaller cam profile. 95 neons had a hotter cam then the newer models just like 68 340 4 speed engines bad a hotter cam then the auto cars so slightly more power. Moms we had to replace the fan set up due to the controler going bad and it dying when she turned on the air and the second fan didn't so the compressor froze up and killed it. Bought a aftermarket fan on Amazon and it works great again for 90 bucks. People going to hate and many have no real world experience with the things they hate. They did have the head gasket recall on the 95's because Daimler wanted to use a cheaper gasket and that gave them a bad reputation but it was the crappy gasket they used. I haven't had to replace it since sister did at 70k, the better gasket truly was a quality part and they had no more issues with them after that.

Motor mounts wear out fast and have had to replaced multiple times to fix excessive vibration in the passenger compartment, but other than that has been an amazing car. I’ve taken the thing all over the country, up and down mountain highways, the whole gambit and it still runs well! Currently drive my Neon 80+ miles a day commuting at freeway speeds.

A thermostat is like the easiest thing to figure out. Imagine just how many cars died cause of this.. My 1998 Hyundai accent died at 60000 miles cause the gage was placed AFTER the thermostat, not giving you any chance to know your car is overheating if your thermostat failed. Way worse cars imho

Thank you so much for making this video! Sadly it is probably too late for many owners. My family’s 2001 PT cruiser had a constant overheating issue. Out of several mechanics, NONE could diagnose the cause. My sister was driving it as it overheated & caught fire on the highway, eventually totally englufed in flames! She barely got out with no injuries. I hope your video helps others to prevent this. I will never buy a Chrysler product after that!

I had a PT Cruiser rental about 11 years ago when my Toyota was in the body shop. To be fair it was a decent car. Roomy and decent driving. My only complaint was the automatic transmission only allowed manual shifting in gears 1, 3 and 4. When going up grades I wanted to downshift to 2nd. 1st was to low and 3rd was too tall. It wouldn't stay in 2nd. The 3 weeks I drove it was a decent experience.

Probably because it was a new car, most all cars are nice when they are new, the real question is what's it's like 10 years later with 120k, is it just about junk or is it ready for another 100k
@wolfman9999999
@wolfman9999999 5 жыл бұрын
@@thetechlibrarian I bought one cheap for $500 with over 140k on it. It was suffering from the neglect that the last couple of owners had given it. A bit of TLC made it a car solid for a cross country trip, in which it did happily. No squeaks, no rattles, no complaints. As has been mentioned elsewhere in the comments, just take care of them and they'll last. The only true issue with working on these is the fact that the engine bays are tight due to the "retro" styling. It makes some work harder than it needs to be as you have to remove parts to make space to work. One of those things is the timing belt, as it requires removing a section of the frame to gain full access. Since it's a "deep" repair, there's a list of seals and the water pump are included in the swap list making it expensive. You have to learn to fix these yourself as nobody wants to touch these anymore due to the labor cost. My first timing belt job was an entire weekend with three of us taking a very systematic and careful approach to ensure that we got everything together correctly, and not have to repeat the process. I could probably tackle it solo now in about a day.

I am also changing the spark plugs and coil even though they were changed 10 years ago and the car is running fine. Don't know why everyone dumps on PT's. My '03 has 208k miles and runs fine. Yes, I did need to rebuild the tranny at 165k, but other than change the timing belt (and water pump-you do both) at the 100k intervals (twice) I've done no other major work. Body is still tight and interior has held up really well. It's a daily driver that simply always works. OK, I am the original owner and yes, I do change the oil every 5k and have regular maintenance done. I do work on it myself for the small stuff and find it easy to get to things. Like any car, if you take reasonable care of it, it will last.
