2004 Toyota Prius replacing Hybrid Transaxle Oil using ATF WS Fluid

I find it easy to thread a plastic tube down from above the transaxle into the fill hole and put a small funnel into the top of the tube. Then I pour from above with the drain pan still in place until I hear the overflow running out. Peter, your videos are fantastic.

I do the same I use a cut 2 ltr soda bottle with a hose that has a close off valve.

She brought her vehicle to the right person to take care of it. Fluid change always important.

Goes to show how well Toyota engineered this vehicle; with proper maintenance, it can very well last for another 20 years. Perhaps the hybrid battery will eventually have to be replaced, along with other miscellaneous issues that might crop up, but it would be worth the expense in a vehicle like this one. I hope that my 2018 Rav4 Hybrid Limited is just as durable and well-engineered as this 2nd generation Prius is.

Nice video Peter. I DIY maintenance on all my vehicles. I have a Gen2 Prius as well but have been using Valvoline MaxLife synthetic for years without issue. I don't have a hydraulic lift at home so I put the car on jack stands and use a funnel and tube and fill the atf from above the engine. Love your content!

Thank you Peter. Very helpful. I don't own Prius. The new 2023 or 2024 Prius really look nice. Nice styling. Thanks for filming and posting.

I enjoyed your video and commentary! As a DIYer, I like to get under my car just to see what's going on and if anything seems off. Someone recommended every 60-90k miles for changing ATF in my Prius and KZbin is usually my first education go-to for everything from car washing to rocket science. Thanks for your contribution!

I don my Toyota auris hybrid 2015 at 90,000 miles, and I have just don it again at 139,000 miles, it’s quite easy to do but ,to make life better for re filling, I got a small vacuum pump that you pump it back in bye hand pressure squeezing the ball , I got it from my local car parts shop for £20 .

Peter, if you will buy a cheap 1 gallon pump sprayer and install a 1/4 inch aluminum tubing on the spray end of the sprayer, you can fill it up with correct amount of trans fluid, pump it up and put aluminum tube in fill hole on trans and fill her up! Works great and is super cheap to build one

No need for a pump to fill the ATF back in, i used a hose pipe & a funnel from the top of the engine bay....no need to make it more difficult as it needs to be. I did my 2015 Yaris 1.3L CVT (Non Hybrid) and it only takes 2.2L. I got the proper Toyota CVT FE ATF drained & re filled 2x as my fluid came in a 5L bottle, left it a week & repeated it. Cost about £70 (5L bottle) so i won't just leave 2.2L sitting in the garage doing nothing.

I wish all transmissions were this easy to service. Faster than an engine oil and filter change.

My 2008 Gen 2 Prius is at 244K New England based miles and going strong, with zero rust. I've changed the oil every 5K miles and trans/diff every 40K. I might try the trans fluid change myself after this video

I need to do this to my gen1 and my gen3. Glad to see that the job is pretty simple. My gen 1 has service records from the dealer that sold the car new, but I don't see any mention of trans fluid.

I have a 3rd gen with 360,000 miles on it.owned since new and have never changed the fluid. Just changed it and it was black as to b e expected but no burnt smell. I had No reason to change it just decided it was time. I know Toyota says it never needs to be changed, but for the price of 40 bucks it’s good insurance.

That car is good for about 220,000 miles and then the bigger issues come back to back - main battery ($1700), front wheel bearing ($450), replace original brakes all around ($550) and you'll start using oil because the little 4 cylinder wears out with the constant start/stopping. Have 252,000 miles on an '08 and will hopefully retire her at 300,000 miles.

No trans filters to replace? I have an old 2000 Echo and always assumed the Prius and Echo shared many components but I guess not so much. For the record, I switched to Valvoline Maxlife Multi-vehicle ATF (full synthetic) for all my vehicles, except CVT, and they all shift smoothly. Most everything else I select OEM.

Peter, you mention not to remove the coolant plug by mistake. Is it worth changing the coolant while you are at it?

Hey Peter is this Synthetic tranny oil and if not why? makes a huge difference up here in very cold Canada.
@aliendroneservices66217 ай бұрын
Check *_Bob is the Oil Guy._* WS is partly synthetic, but seems to work fine regardless: "I put Toyota WS in my Corolla before I sold it to my son, I drain and fill once a year. Fluid still comes out as red as it goes in. It now has 279,000 miles (446,000 kms) on it now and shifts like new. *_The OEM fluid has performed well in temperatures below -40F (-40C) and past 120F (49C) with no issues._* I am not sure why I would need to choose another."

Unfortunately on newer Toyotas, say 2017 and up, they got rid of the dip stick for the transmission fluid, so you have no way of checking the fluid level
