Thanks Brother. I just put new aluminum heads on my 350 rebuild, and realized that I had to install a weak valve spring to measure for correct pushrod length after having the block decked. The ol "rope a dope" trick looks good to me. 👍

Hey man THANK YOU SO MUCH you just saved me at least 6_8 hours of back breaking knuckle busting to replace an exhaust valve spring on #1 of an 2004 4.0 I6 jeep wj I just bought at auction for 600. Great shape other wise. I did comp. test 1st cyl. 65 psi all others 155-165. Once again THANKS FOR THE ROPE TRICK. Cheers from Jacksonville Florida

Nice video, I was wondering if that cheap leverage tool would work (1995 K1500, 350/5.7). What do you mean at 6:22 when you 'cut the threads' on the nut? Do you have to do this in order to use this tool?
@SquarebodyStuff Жыл бұрын
You don't have to, it just makes the nut easier to turn . Or find a regular nut that fits.

My headers are tight to the spark plugs and I need to use a box wrench on a couple plugs. For that reason, a compressed air fitting won't work. I like the rope trick a lot - it should work fine for me! Thanks!

hi there , how you identify your valve spring need replacement?
@SquarebodyStuff Жыл бұрын
If upgrading the cam you'll need the correct springs. If it is a high mileage deal then I use the when in doubt, change them out thought process. You can also use a spring pressure gage to check the spring pressure

Have you had any problems with the studs pulling out say with a comp cams high energy 268 cam with 454 lift
@SquarebodyStuff4 жыл бұрын
Nope. Should be fine with that cam. The 268 is a great all around cam for small blocks and big blocks.

Thanks for the video! I think I've done the valve springs with every method possible, I personally like the compressed air method best because it's faster for me, but if there's no air, the rope is second best way, I also like the bolt on handle better than the twist-up spring compressor, because it's easier for my big fingers to get to the keepers, nor do I have to use grease to keep the keepers in place, but either way, both methods wil get the job done. I wonder how many inexperienced diy's didn't leave enough rope hanging out so they can pull the rope back out? Lol
@SquarebodyStuff2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Several different ways to skin this cat, but wanted to show how I do it. Not leaving enough rope sticking our is a good learning experience. Lol

Hey I’m going to change valve springs on a 350 chev and I’m just wondering how much air pressure I should put in the cylinder or if I should just leave it continuously pumping in like he did? Thanks
@SquarebodyStuff2 жыл бұрын
You'll have to have continuous air going to it.

What’s the best way to know when to put your rope in (just before TDC) if you can’t see your crank because you’re pan is still on?
@SquarebodyStuff4 жыл бұрын
I like to use the plastic straws off of brake cleaner or carb cleaner cans to stick in the sparkplug hole to get a feel for where the piston is at.
@nicotoscani82704 жыл бұрын
@@SquarebodyStuff Ah ok. Good idea. Thank you. Any risk of damage to the valves or piston should you go past TDC with that little straw in there?

Do you ever have any issues with shimming the spring height?
@SquarebodyStuff3 жыл бұрын
No
@cmdr_scotty3 жыл бұрын
Not sure if it's been mentioned in the comments yet, but using the compressed air method, it's best to do it with the engine still bolted to the trans in the car. Put the cylinder at TDC, put the trans in 5th gear and then apply compressed air. Having the trans in 5th gear will help keep the engine from turning over, that way if you do drop a valve, it likely won't fall all the way into the cylinder and you may be able to grab it (depends on the size and shape of the combustion chamber)
@josephastier74213 жыл бұрын
Yeah the compressed air method, aka "the way the pros do it" comes with its own risks.

In a 4.6 Chevy, can one or two valves be changed, or does all the valves have to be changed? Thanks anyone. Just trying to do it myself, and not spend a lot of money.
@SquarebodyStuff4 жыл бұрын
You can change just the valves that are bad, but its a good idea to replace them all while you have it apart if the budget allows.
