I don't understand the negative comments. This is a great video. Not everyone lives near an archery shop and not many shops will put up with a customer spending hours tweaking his bow on their press. I have been considering buying my own press so I can work on my bow at home. After watching this, there is no need. This is a great solution to a universal problem. Thank you so much for making this video.

This works on most bows I've seen. You won't damage your cams. I use an aluminium rod wrapped in duct tape. Works pretty well just make sure your strings are in the cam runners BEFORE you begin putting pressure on the string. The prices some shops want is absurd. Its a 10 minute job to swap a string, yet some charge anywhere from $15 - 150.
@DravesArchery11 жыл бұрын
Cont. When you chalk a cam, you're only using about 12 lbs. of pressure; when you use a bow press - you're probably using around 100+ lbs. of pressure.. Which can flex & bend your riser if not pressed properly. We have literally done this to THOUSANDS!!!! of bows over the last 27 years -- we have had ZERO problems or complaints from customers -- whom we have done this in front of! They appreciate someone who knows what they are doing to correct & fix their bows.
@rosspatterson86714 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I'm sure that Mathews would love to see this video. How do they recommend working on their bows? I'm positive they wouldn't warranty any issue or damage you would possibly cause to the limbs while doing this. (Split fibers due to sharp edge of Allen wrench). Your reasoning for doing this makes absolutely no sense. The limbs literally flex more when it's drawn to full draw, then when pressed to remove the strings. Not only is this completely unsafe, but it shows that you are a hack now technician.

just the same as breaking down a APA bow really. one improvement...you can stand on the center serving (protected between clean ply or summit) and pull the bow up to insert your allen wrench. I use this method on a PSE stinger I own except I also place rubber protectors on the limbs after inserting the hex wrench and let down the hex wrench on to those protectors (made out of thick bicycle tyre cut offs). the protectors have the added benefit of increasing the string let off a tad more. the hole you are looking for on a stinger x is the small round hole visible just to the inside of the limbs when fully let down. about 3mm in diameter on its own between the limb and timing mark for performance setting. hth

There is a way to press your bow without using a bow press that is easy, simple and cheap. First turn your limb bolts down to the lowest poundage allowed. Then on both limbs, take some soft sash cord or nylon rope and at the bottom of the fork where the limbs split apart for the cams, tie the same type knot as used for a string loop with the rope ends coming out through between the fork split and tie the 2 ends together (a square knot will work). Then take a ratchet strap with hooks, hook the ends to the loops you tied to the limbs, pull the ratchet strap tite and ratchet your limbs together until your string and cables are as loose as you need them to be, while making sure your ratchet strap is clear of all bow mounted accessories. Works like a charm...done it this way numerous times with zero damage to cams or limbs. On spit limbs, you may have to make 2 wraps around each limb to keep the rope from slipping if your bow doesn't have completely parallel limbs.

Aren't a lot of the people freaking out here missing an important point ? The video poster gives the only mention about halfway down the comments... You are not doing a full draw, you are just pulling enough to chock the first available hole on the cam. This is only going to be a fraction of the draw weight. That said, I am not crazy about the small allen wrench method. I use a long, fat as possible wood dowel. I am very safety conscious, but I am not paying a bow shop to work on my Amazon budget bow for something as simple as this.

Thanks for the video, I was already doing this before I found it though. To all the naysayers, my wife's bow has camo vinyl decals covering the entire limb, the Allen wrench doesn't even indent the vinyl. Like the man says, if you don't feel comfortable, don't do it. If you have Velcro closures on your shoes, because you cannot tie them yourselves, this method may not be for you.
@ssn7089 жыл бұрын
AngelDeVille You might well need velcro closures on your shoes if you try this shit. Good way to maim yourself. There is a reason pros use bow presses. Inbred hicks stick tools in precision made cams.
@ssn7089 жыл бұрын
Jason Bequette I am neither scared nor ignorant. Those who chock the cam are stupid and careless. The bow manufacturers agree. The overwhelming number of people on here agree with me. The vast majority or archers agree. Anyone with an IQ higher than their shoe size agrees. Just because you have no brains or sense, does not mean you should announce that to the world, as you just have. Wanna wreck your bow and lose some fingers, have at it, dipshit. Those of us with common sense and intelligence will do it the RIGHT way.
@ssn7089 жыл бұрын
Jason Bequette The manufacturer's have to agree? No. The manufacturers know how their bows work and what damage can be done by idiocy, such as this. Bow manufacturers do not profit from you bringing your bow in for service, so your "economic reasons" is simply bullshit. It is some rare, inbred dipshit doing this in a shop, because of "economic reasons". Namely, insurance. Shops are required to be insured, and if some idiot did this, and lost a finger, insurance simply would not pay. Then the shop owner becomes directly liable. This is why any shop owner with an IQ number higher than his shoe size would fire an employee in a second if he pulled this shit. Not to mention, he would void the customer's warranty, opening them up for a lawsuit from the customer. So no, this is not "common" in shops. I am neither ignorant nor naive, that's all you. You are simply wrong, nothing more to it.
@ssn7089 жыл бұрын
Jason Bequette Nice to see you go on an insane rant that discredits any point you may have possibly had. You clearly have never owned a business. One lawsuit for allowing (not even ordering) an employee to do something this stupid would cost the owner potentially MILLIONS, and his insurer (who would not pay a claim) would drop him like a bad habit and no other insurer would touch him. No, only morons and inbred hicks would ever attempt such a thing vs. a bow press. "In a survival situation"??? Right, because taking tension off the bow is often the difference between life and death.
@ssn7089 жыл бұрын
Jason Bequette if you owned businesses either you know I am correct, or you are a complete idiot. As the guy in the video demonstrates, even complete idiots can own businesses. I am neither naive nor am I anything other than grown. Try 43 year old decorated submarine veteran. You are the one advocating stupid, irresponsible behavior that could get someone killed or maimed in order to save time, and supporting someone whose advice will put many people at risk. there is a reason pretty much no one on this video discussion agrees with your position, and it is not because you are correct. Maybe once you actually grow up yourself, you will understand. But not likely.

Draves Archery will this technique work if your bow string has derailed after a dry fire
@renatugaming57304 жыл бұрын
@@charlie-8969 1. Dry fire and derail is 2 different things. Take your to the pro shop and they will be able to fix your bow for you, you might have to order parts for a derail, other times the shop can put the strings back on. 2. DON"T DO THIS! This is so stupid and so dangerous that you will need to replace parts, and who will be saying "I told you so" after you have to tell your shop what you did so you can get new parts?
@renatugaming57304 жыл бұрын
@@charlie-8969 derail is when you torque your bow and the string gets off the track of the cams, dry fire is when you have the string in the line of the cam and you don't have any arrow to absorb the shock of the limbs setting back after flexing. BOTH AREN'T covered by bow manufacture warranties and are considered user error, you don't magically derail or dry fire your bow, you put a death grip on your bow, you use fingers to shoot instead of a release, you pull your bow back without an arrow and it happens. It's not a defect in manufacturing and it's not the company's fault, it's YOUR fault.
@renatugaming57304 жыл бұрын
Then why the hell did you post it? Jessy has done a disservice to the archery community for trying to spread that you can do this without a bow press, when in reality, you'll be the one needing to tell a shop if you ever need to order parts, and your viewers are going to have to explain to a shop why they need new parts and what happened. 20 years of experience ( now on 27)? How about 0. A legit store with 20 years of experience would know better not to replace bowstrings without using a bow press. For the love of all that is archery, tell the DIY archers to get a bow press and do it themselves. Please pin your comment so it isn't just sitting in the middle of the comment section so that your "DIY archers" get to know why the hell you fucked up by posting this. that sketchy huh? dang i know all i need is one turn on my string to get my cam in time, would you say the bow master bow press is less sketchy than this method?

If you're going to chock cams like this to replace a string without a press.. would it at least be best to use something softer than solid metal? Hard wood or pens with rubber grips would be perfect maybe? The metal could buckle it. Anyone have any better approach to this rather than jamming allen keys into the holes? I mean, maybe that's still fine? As long as you gently let the cam rest on it, not let it clunk right? :f

i agree with you...i use a rubber coated small metal rod...works great and ive changed strings,cables and done many things on bows this way..

I would advise against this method. After viewing another video similar to this I tried the method several times on my Parking Blackhawk. I ended up damaging the cam. The cam is still fully functional, but there are large indentations from where the cam was braced up against the limb. I used a large allen wrench that I put tape around. I figured the tape would help reduce any marks to the cam. I was wrong! The marks look so bad I'm contemplating on getting a new cam. The cam appears to be made out of aluminum and the metal is soft. I’m afraid that further use of this method may permanently damage the cam.

+Paul S. , I am contemplating attempting this, did you loosen-power down the draw weight first? if so what was the lower end of your draw weight? My bow's minimum poundage is 60lbs

if bow presses aren't needed, why would pro shops, whose typical life span is 5 yrs and struggle constantly with finances invest in an expensive press? Oh and you can get a pocket press for field use or at home for $50-100 with much less risk of damage to bow and a whole lot safer.

Because some people can't figure out how to do anything for themselves, so they throw money at it instead. I could pay someone to laser zero my rifle, or I could take a few rounds and do it myself better and save that cash, it's the same thing. Perhaps if those struggling so called Pro Shops learned how to do things themselves, they wouldn't be struggling with their finances, then they wouldn't be over extending their check book, and they might get to be in business more than 5 years. Btw you said: "Oh and you can get a pocket press for field use or at home for $50-100 with much less risk of damage to bow and a whole lot safer." So my question to you is, if it can be done with a $50 pocket press, then why did those struggling Pro Shops over extend themselves and get the expensive press? Why not just buy the $50 pocket press? See how that works?

I'm going to answer your question though, one word, INSURANCE.

***** Time actually, pocket press 2-5 minutes, bow press- 10-25 secs. Time = money especially during this time of year when shops are packed and an average person's patience is minimal

I've done this succesfully. But please use something stronger than allen wrench. I used a big screw driver in place of allen wrench. Good video though. Nice to have something to irked some of those greedy pro shop. Imagine, they charge like 100 dollars to replace the strings which I provided btw.

Everybody I've seen says to never, EVER stick ANYTHING in a cam to immobilize it. While the cam as a whole is built to withstand the weight of a drawn bow limb, a single spoke is not. You put a whole new kind of torque on the limb and cam. I just bought me a bowmaster portable bow press. It's actually one of the only portable presses that is approved by Bear Archery that won't void your warranty if you use it on the bow. Just a thought.

I fully understand the idea of chalking the cams but to support this idea as something you can do anytime is not right. If this was something supported by the industry than many people would be doing it all ready and there would be chalks made specifically for this (like there is for car tires) but they don't. if you want to do your own work on a bow go buy a bowmaster bow press or someother portable bow press. maybe you guys should make a video showing how to use one of these. THE PROPER WAY.
@alexdelara985810 жыл бұрын
Bad.. while the press is pressing where it should (the limbs) what you are doing is adding stress to the cam spoke... bad.
