Wow great video. Ive worked in quick lubes for quite a few years and Im a bit of an oil snob. So nice to see someone do a proper oil change and this comparison with extraction V drain plug was surprising. If the mk7 leaves a quarter of a qt after extraction, then thats enough for me to use drain plug only. But if I had a mk8 I would see no prob using extraction.

Thank you for the kind words. We find the mod of cutting the tip of the extractor works wonders as well to make sure they is as little oil left as possible.

Note for any mk8 R owners, it doesn't take the same oil as the gti. The R uses the older 0w30 weight 504/507 rates oil. The gti uses the 0w20 508 weight oil.

Do I need to use an oil extractor or can I just drain it from the bottom?

You definitely can drop from the bottom. But this engine was designed to be extracted from the top. That being said, you will do no harm from dropping the oil from the bottom.

Brian, great video for us, many thanks. How do you remove that excess oil in the oil filter housing? You mention this about 1:50 in. Peter
@rosslarkin67423 ай бұрын
I use the tip of the extractor hose to suck all of the oil off of the oil filter housing cap and then also stick the tube down into the housing and suck the oil that is still in the engine through those holes in the engine as well. You will remove about 250ml more oil this way.
@Tube-bank3 ай бұрын
That’s a great tip to get that 250ml oil out - that’s a lot of used oil. Thanks. But instead of “use the tip of the extractor hose to suck all of the oil off of the oil filter housing cap”, could you not just invert the cap and let gravity take the old oil away out of the cap? Have I missed something? Peter
@rosslarkin67423 ай бұрын
@@Tube-bank you could just use gravity, I just use the suction from the extractor since that is faster and it is only a few mls of oil in the actual cap. Most of that additional oil is still stuck in the part you screw the cap into (part of the engine). Perhaps I am not explaining it right, I don't know what the technical name for the part I am talking about.
@Tube-bank3 ай бұрын
You are explaining it right, very well in fact. I understand it. “it is only a few mls of oil in the actual cap”. That’s it, and the majority of the 250ml is in the part of the housing that’s part of the engine. Got it. Can you imagine a dealer/workshop doing this when they change oil for you with the extract method? I don’t think so. Many thanks.

I bought a oil funnel kit and was let down by the fact the 4th gen has a new designed oil filler cap :-/ I was still able to use it, but not carefree like it would of been had it fit snug on top. Greetings from Vancouver, BC. At what mileage would you recommend the first oil change? My 23’ GTi has 6,923km at the moment and I’m getting conflicting info on when to do my first oil change. I noticed on your video, the car has 6,944km which isn’t far from my mileage. The conflicting info I got was to either change my oil at 8,000km and techs at the dealership told me to run with it till I hit 15,000km or one year. It’s been exactly one year this month that I took delivery of the car and there’s an oil change reminder on my dash.

Just did my MK8 R with an OEMTools brand 9.5L extractor and had about a full cup left when I drained it after, and I sucked bubbles and air for a while towards the end of the extraction, wonder if it’s the standard angle cut on my extractor, so next time I’ll try the flat cut with the notch, but I was disappointed when I pulled the plug after watching this, glad I did tho….didnt trust myself more than anything 😂
@rosslarkin67423 ай бұрын
You have to push the air bleeder and let some air out of the extractor. Then pump a few more times and some more oil will flow. Then as the flow slows again, you take the tube and move it up and down in the dipstick tube while pumping. Force the extractor tube down every time as you push and do this for about a minute. Continue pushing the air bleeder. Then you can even use the end of the extractor tube to suck the oil that remains in the oil filter housing (the metal part of the engine) before installing your filter. If you do this, there will be no oil dripping out when you remove the drain plug, and you will actually get about 250ml more oil out of the engine.
