Why does everyone HATE the MK8 GTI and MK8 Golf R? Well not everyone does, but a whole lot of folks really hate the MK8. MK8 issues like bad software, MK8 steering wheel, MK8 haptic, MK8 buttons and of course the dealer markups lead to a lot of bad feelings about the MK8 GTI and MK8 Golf R! I have really loved a lot about this car in the 2.5years ive had it.

Great Vid BTW!!! They have these in Delray Beach Florida.. well.. ONE.. for $45,000.. and a (GTI -Sfor $39K) they can't sell these. VW needs to wake up. Exactly -- they're cheaper to manufacture. They also advertise well and look good in photos of the car, and the company can market all the crammed-in features and functionality. To me, eliminating buttons for touch-screens generally makes a car feel cheap. Luxury is now having buttons and switches. If you look at super high-end cars like Rolls Royce, they actually have really good buttons and switches. The opposite end of the spectrum is newer Teslas, with super cheap touchscreen-only interiors.

It's also a matter of feeling they must pile on all kinds of additional functionality/features and need some way to access it all. Many of these 'features' most drivers will never make use of.

I think a lot of these issues wouldn’t have been such a big deal if it wasn’t following up the mk7, which did such an amazing job of getting the basics right. The obvious cost cutting felt like a betrayal of the GTI/R’s reputation of feeling like it was a class above its price point

It's not even a problem for reliability's sake. The problem is that you can't literally do ANYTHING while driving, without removing your eyes off the road. In my 370z; while driving, I can effortlessly touch and feel exactly where the buttons are for adjusting volume, station, heating, climate, ventilation, seat heating, seat adjustment, mirror adjustment. Everything, without taking my eyes off the road. Not that I need to do those things constantly...but the mere fact that YOU CAN'T do it in these new cars is morbid. We recognize the hazard of texting while driving, using mobile phones while driving - while at the same time, we completely ignore the fact that people fiddle and play around on the screen in their car to do a basic thing such as OPEN THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT (fckn tesla).

I think there are a few reasons. 1. The Toyota GR Corolla exists. 2. Honda Civic type R exists. 3. VW can't make a water pump that won't leak. 4. VW brand reputation of being unreliable really hurts the brand. After owning 2 GTI's a MK6 i bought new in 2013 and currently driving a MK7.5 GTI S i just prefer my car inside and out over the new car. So the people that are willing to put up with Volkswagen quirks aren't willing to trade their current cars for new ones.

I must be in the minority because I love my MK8 GTI (2023 40th Anniversary Edition). I do have the infotainment with the knobs but I really don’t use them. I was a little nervous about no manual controls for HVAC but I haven’t had any issues so far and I just set it to AUTO at like 65-70 degrees and let it do its thing. I don’t accidentally trigger any buttons on the steering wheel and the I’m used to the shiny black plastic by now, if it gets scratched up I’ll wrap those pieces with vinyl. My previous VW was a Kerma tuned Golf TDI which was fantastic in its own right, but definitely showing its age on the inside after 12 years of use. I test drove a couple lightly used MK7.5’s before finding my MK8 new and the MK8 won. I guess I’m just the odd man out.

I picked up a 2024 GTI 380 SE a couple months and so far it’s been an absolute blast to drive and own like he said. I have actually got the rear end to come out on multiple occasions! A couple gripes I have were included in this video like the infotainment system is slow to boot and overall is a melancholy experience. I could complain about it for hours, but to me this car is about driving. One of the gripes with driving is the shifter is not that great for a 40k hot hatch. The first 600 miles its was very hard to shift into gears before break-in and only about mile 600-2000 did the shifter feel okay. But now at 6k miles it feels sloppy and sluggish and it’ll make me miss shifts because Im not trying to force it into gear. Definitely going to upgrade the linkages/bushings soon. I put an APR Stage 1 tune on the car at 1500 miles and never looked back. Smoothed out the cars power band in every mode (including twitchy sport) and added a significant amount of healthy power. It pulls hard all the way to redline and peak torque at 2000rpms kicks you in the seat! I added a CTS intake for more turbo sound and I plan to add lowering springs soon as well as the clubsport muffler. If only this car wasn’t so ******* expensive. I remember when a brand new E-class started at 40k…

I love my Clark plaid, but I do find both the cloth and leather chairs in the MK8 to be comfier. But... the MK8 interior overall feels a bit cheap. The screens are sharp and the touch controls really aren't that bad, but climbing back into my 7.5 after sitting in a MK8, the older car has a certain "rightness" about it that's hard to quantify. The MK8 is good enough that I've seriously considered trading in to get one, but the MK7 is just that much better (to me) that I can never quite go through with it.

I have had a new 2024 GTI for about 4 months now, after having had a Mk7, and many other cars, including several Porsches. Dynamically, the new GTI is excellent. Nothing else has that perfect suspension blend of not too firm, not to soft, but just right for spirited street driving. The car is comfortable, quiet, has a decent motor, great brakes, good handling, excellent suspension, a great size, and practical with 4 seats. Of course the mk7 sport had the perfect interior, with 3 simple knobs for climate, real gauges, and a real parking brake. On the Mk8, those stering wheel touch things are garbage, but I don't touch them too much. The center screen is annoying, but mostly fine. The hill hold is the worst thing about the car. They should issue a recall on it, it is that bad.

Thanks Charles - great summing up (as usual). I can get used to pretty much anything as long as I have a good driving experience. What I cant forgive is a boring color palette and dealer rip-offs (I mean "mark ups"). I was fortunate that my local dealer wasnt attaching a mark-up when I bought my Spektrum but I am certain that when the 8.5's come around he will go for the gusto - cuz, you know, GREED is the in thing

I was unsure of the mk8 till I seen one in person, then I drove one and the pros outweigh cons imo. The seats are much better than the 7.5 as is the streering wheel, I got over the haptics in a couple of hours due to how good the car drives. I also enjoy the way the interior looks in comparison. Is it perfect nope, but I think its a improvement in all the areas that are most important to me.

My wife’s ‘22 Tiguan is now on its third haptic button steering wheel. Travel assist error was the reason for the first replacement and probably why it was originally traded in at a gmc dealer. Originally the steering wheels were back ordered for over a year which given the incessant travel assist error I can under why someone would dump a one year old car at a gm dealer. The second replacement was due to faulty steering wheel heating. It just comes on at random and immediately at startup even in 100 degree temps. Really just a failure of engineering and execution on vw’s part. And the egregious omission of illuminated controls on the head unit for volume and climate still continues in the 2024 atlas. Really a head scratcher they’d continue to push out such garbage knowing that everyone hates it. I’ve owned something like 10 VAG vehicles over the years but these last few years of poor design and execution really make me wonder about them.

I love mine. I never had a MK7 but had a 6 GTI, 6 R and 4 GTI and they were all great. I wanted a GR Corolla but after test driving it, feeling how unapologetically rental car the interior is and a 10k ADM, I walked on it . Found a MK8 GTI 40th the next day for MSRP, drove it and realized how I love VW and drove it home. It took just a couple days to get used to the interior functions and I love them now. Crazy thing is my 24 Rav4 Hybrid has a way worse functioning infotainment and a much cheaper interior (and for much more money spent.).

@@hovan2yourjunk If I would ever buy a Mk. 8 with a haptic wheel, the first thing I'd do is see if they could swap the steering wheel for the one with buttons. I must have a lucky one. After 46,000 miles in my 22 GTI SE after almost two years now I still do not regret it to this day. Only issues I had was the steering wheel, door speakers, and a broken gas door flap from running through a car wash and a puncture in the OEM Goodyear tires. That’s it. I never complained about the haptic buttons or infotainment. In fact I quite liked it. It was something different than what every other manufacturer is doing. I always like to say…remember when we had buttons on our phones? Apple or Android? Look at where we are now and almost everyone has one without buttons. In conclusion I enjoy every minute of my GTI and plan to keep it as long as I possibly can. Hopefully forever so that way I can pass it down one day.

The biggest flaw are the driver's assist functions. The car slams on the brakes on the highway if you get too close to traffic when you need to make a maneuver. Unfortunately, VW, like the rest of us, is captive to choosing from blah to awful. Engine covers. Isn't the job of the engine cover to hold heat in? That's great for first start up in cool to cold weather. After that, not so much. My wild guess is that the engine actually performs better without it. Have a great day, Charles!

My MK8 R manual is as good as and in someways better than my S4 and TTRS. I loved my TTRS, sorry it’s gone, but the R is pretty darn close and again some ways better. I had 22 R and traded it for a 24 R; something extra special with the last year of the manual. In my opinion, the 24 is a much better build quality than my 22. Do I think more buttons would be better, yes, however, the infotainment screen is pretty easy once you own the car for a while. I look forward to every time I get behind the wheel. For the 30 year olds who haven’t reach a financial status to buy a new R, that’s why there are used cars. You can buy a new GLI decked out for low 30s and a GTi s.
