How to Change Your Sewing Machine Needle and Why. (What is a Needle Scarf)

How to change your industrial sewing machine needle, which direction it goes and everything you want to know about installing needles, even in machines that you may not have a manual for. What is the difference between a needle groove and a needle scarf. What direction do you thread the needle.
I covered some of this in an earlier video but to help folks find this helpful information I thought that a dedicated video was appropriate. I have added some additional footage to help fill out the information some more too.

Another excellent video. You remind me of détails I might overlook, at times. Who ever would have know there were so many needle systems ? I finally learned this a while ago, but it did surprise me. Kudos for comprehensive explanations of what goes wrong. I can't say how happy I am find this comprehensive explanation. I would love a whole play list on making minor adjustments, and why things are set up as they are. I was hoping you would do the same kind of explanation on thread/needle size. EG: what it looks like when the needle is too big or too small. It would it be helpful to know when to try the needle a size up or down. Ditto on timing. I go by the book and the machine works pretty well, but still misses a few stitches... Where to now? I would be glad to feed you a whole series of questions like this. I am newish, and these answers are so hard to find.

I've never understood why some (most) needle systems make it possible to insert needles incorrectly. It seems so simple to just have the shank flattened on one side the way it is on most domestic machines. Any idea why other needle systems don't do this?

How do you know when a needle needs to be replaced with a new one?

Some of the things I covered are Bent, Damaged, wrong size for your thread, sewing machine not stitching properly, improperly installed, wrong needle. Hope this helps you.

The needle is such an important part of the sewing knot process. If you put a sharpie pen mark on the the thread, you will see that the mark on the thread will travel through the eye of the needle about 31 times, before it becomes incorporated into the knot. When needles get worn out they become abrasive to the thread and fray the thread, or melt the thread. Change the needle first on a machine that is working poorly...
