Brenden...the battery under the seat behind the passenger seat is NOT the hybrid battery...that battery is a 12 volt battery... The 450 volt d.c. hybrid battery is located under the vehicle on the passenger side covered with a shield...don't EVER mess with it or ANY orange wires under the hood !! ... please watch you-tube videos on this subject....

Doug, you are right (and Brenden is wrong). A bit more info: The floor stamping for the Maverick Hybrid is nearly identical to the Escape Hybrid, and both have the hybrid propulsion battery in an indentation under the floor, roughly under the rear seat on the passenger side. For extra credit: That same stamping also provides space for the larger PHEV battery used in the Escape plug-in hybrid (that space is currently unused in the Maverick). If Ford ever fixes its production problems with the Maverick, it is a near certainty that we will see a Maverick PHEV. However, because of certain underside geometries, it will likely be limited to FWD only, just as it is in the Escape.

Ford did the right thing by bringing back this engine in a hybrid (see 2008-2012 Escape hybrid). You can drive in battery only with a gentle right foot and under 40MPH. Question: I drive my '23 XLT MAYBE once a week, and that trip rarely amounts to fifteen or twenty miles, half of which is 35mph on average. The battery stays so low that the truck "goes dark" until the key is returned to the ignition and turned on, at which point the gas engine comes on. Should I be worried that the 12v battery will get so depleted that the truck won't start? Should I be occasionally charging the 12 volt battery?
@brendandrives

I mean, the truck still has an alternator that charges the 12v battery so I can't imagine you need to intervene as long as everything is functioning as intended.
@aldenpines

@@brendandrivesYeah, but the alternator only charged when the engine is running. When it sits in the garage for a few weeks, there's all kinds of electronics constantly sucking the battery. That's the weak link in a pure hybrid.

@aceroadholder2185
@aceroadholder2185 Жыл бұрын
There no dedicated starter for the engine. The engine is started by the smaller motor-generator. The engine has no alternator or belts of any kind. The 12v battery under the back seat is charged from the inverter that controls the hybrid battery under the floor. The 12v battery runs the vehicle's accessory electrical system. The headlamps, wipers, etc. The air conditioner is electrically driven from the hybrid battery. The transmission is very simple. It is a CVT transmission, but it has no torque converter, steel belts and cones, no clutches or bands, no high pressure pump. There is a low pressure pump to lubricate the bearings. The trick is that there is one planetary gear set in the transmission...that's it. The smaller motor-generator is hooked directly to the sun gear in the planetary gearset, the engine is hooked directly to the planetary gear, and the main motor is directly hooked to the to the ring gear. The ring gear is engaged with the standard issue differential that drives the front wheels. The computer controls both motors and the engine to give a transition between the motors and the engine that is so smooth you can't feel it. The transmission has no reverse, so backing up is electric only.

To be a useful plug in hybrid the battery would have to be 5x bigger. Like on the Ioniq hybrid the battery is about 1.5KWh and on the Ioniq plug-in hybrid the battery is about 8KWh (I have one and can do between 40 and 50KM on full electric, after the battery gets down to 17% charge it then drive as a normal hybrid).

If someone buys a truck just to drive 5 miles to work, and 5 miles back, there is not really a reason to get a truck. For most situations, a truck is actually worse than a sedan, or hatchback, or station wagon. Buy groceries, your stuff is either in the back seat where people sit, or it's in the bed of the truck sliding around, or blowing out. Sure, there are covers for the bed, but then your stuff still slides around. So then you need to get a tool to hold the stuff in place, so you don't need to climb up into the bed to get your cans of food, or what ever you have back there, which slid all over the place. Sure, you can put a bike in the back of a pickup truck, but you can also get a bike rack for your car. Or roof racks, for the rare occasion you take something big with you. Honestly, the only 2 situations I can see a truck being useful is to move tall objects, like a fridge. But even then, it's hard to lift it up into the truck. A small trailer would be easier, as it's lower to the ground. Sure, you can put something like plywood in the back of a truck, or long boards.. But roof racks again will solve that. Or maybe, if you move smelly stuff, like mulch, then sure, it is better in the truck. Something like the Nissan Leaf would be a better option for most people. Or maybe an older BMW i3 with a range extender. Not sure, but just some ideas. But America, being America, most of us buy a pickup truck to look "Cool", and come up with very small reasons to ever need it..

@djdickey
@djdickey 6 ай бұрын
@@matt45540 except Prius relies on a large battery that can be plug in charged that keeps the underpowered ICE motor at a constant speed which is better for the ice motor itself and better for fuel economy. Ford decided that the battery could be smaller (probably to keep weight low) so they could put in a bigger ICE motor. They won't let you charge the battery putting more work on the undersized battery that absolutely will wear out faster than a Prius battery. On the upside the Maverick battery is cheaper, but you'll be replacing it sooner. The Maverick doesn't even use battery only mode if it's cold (a safety feature to maintain the battery) this means you'll be burring 25% more gasoline than a regular ICE only model during these times. You could heat the battery, but they could have installed a larger batter to accommodate temperature regulating equipment. External heaters are worse for the battery than integrated systems. In short, this is a buy drive and dump vehicle before the maintenance bill in 100k miles costs more than the value of the vehicle. I suggest holding out for cheaper sodium ion battery technology that has no extra benefit than simply being cheaper than lithium, meaning adding battery maintenance tech would make the car the same price as lithium ion without and then cheaper to replace (in comparison to lithium) in the future. (There's talk that sodium ion is better for the environment in disposal but that hasn't been proven yet.)
