I can't tell you how happy I am to see you leave the SMB example at the beginning. That is indeed the way every basic CE cheat I make goes the first time until I figure out what weird thing the game is doing or I do the exact same thing the same way and it just works which can also be annoying. Also I just love that you made this video and hope you make more like it!

A double in assembly is an integer with twice as much allocated memory as a regular integer (so it can be BIGGER)
@TreesPlease427 ай бұрын
A double is double the size, from 32bit to 64bit, but it has a decimal place allowing fractional numbers. The decimal can be shifted using an exponent, kinda like scientific numbers eg 3.7 * 10^3 = 3700. How this is handled varies by machine which can lead to unexpected issues. It also makes determinism more difficult in physics engines.

I learned the color palette of Mario's sprite is independent from the sprite, which I assume is why small Mario also had the fire flower outfit. Makes sense when you think about Luigi as just being a palette swap.

Stated before: this captures both the usage of memory addresses in a game's state and the fun ways in which it is impermanent and a challenge to sift through depending on the game. I'm all for reimplementation of cheat codes in singleplayer to reduce the need for using memory editing, but for situations (most modern ones) where they're not available this is a great skill to have and opens a window into how games function

I've played plenty (PLENTY!) games, where figuring out how to cheat in them was more fun than playing the game with or without the cheat.

I used to love entering random values into Game Genie as a kid and seeing what happened. I had no books, internet, or any idea what a Game Genie was outside of a few codes

Video games ARE cool! I also use Cheat Engine to release myself from idle games when I'm done with them. The Crazy Taxi one on phones is pretty good and fyi, the premium currency wasn't protected in any way when I played it.

I had two Action Replays for SNES, the original that allowed 4 codes at a time and the upgrade that allowed... I forget, but it was more. SFII was where it got most fun use for me, moves in the air, new palettes etc. I actually don't remember using it much for anything else though I got good at finding my own codes.

Two modern games with built in cheats come to mind: Control, and Tunic. Both games have the same problem for me in that the combat is _okay_ , but when the damage-sponge enemies start showing up, it just becomes a chore. I would have put both of these games down had they not had built in invincibility options. Is that technically considered cheating if the game itself gives you the option? 🤔 But yeah, I wish more games did this. It's great to be able to turn off the parts of a game that I'm not enjoying so I can keep enjoying the parts that I do... enjoy. (P.S. I wish the Monster Hunter series had built in cheats to disable their terrible non-story and obnoxious paper thin characters and actually just kinda everything that isn't the actual hunting of monsters, god why do I like the monster hunting part so much when every other aspect of those games is a sucky time waste 😭😭)

cheating is THE BEST! for me it's almost always in a resource game where you do all the story you care to and just want to see the end of game tech or build a big dumb base or whatever without spending 900 hours gathering stuff up. if I end up cheating in a game it's to just squeeze the last bit of juice from a fun thing
