Thank you soo much for teaching us. We are so lucky too know about the same issue how to measure right temperature in that small bowl water. Your guide made me feel refreshed. I am so pleased now after knowing this setting temperature problem solved. Because I have sm digital thermometer. Kind of same hand size. Thanks buddy. 🥰🙏🏻👍🏻

That water would be warmer than 0° as it's not frozen wouldnt it?
@Phoenix88.3 жыл бұрын
Nope, a mixture of water and ice is at 0º exactly per definition.

No problem! A lot of the thermometers out there are honestly not that good :/

I've been having guppy deaths every time I add them to my tank. My neons and pleco are OK and water always tests good. I decided to double check water temperature and found my glass thermometer is out by 5 degrees C! Tested against 3 other thermometers, my water was at 31C since my heater thermostat is also way off on it's scale. I'm running the tank at 25.5 now and I hope that was the cause of the deaths. I bought a glass thermometer because I didn't trust the little cheap stick ons. Now I won't trust glass and will verify any I buy

I suggest doing it while it’s in the freezer, outside, or wherever you got the ice from. When I tried this out with my thermometer inside it was reading 33 or 34 degrees, but when I did it outside in the cold it was reading 32 degrees, which is what it should show.

Thank you for sharing this! I was driving myself crazy trying to figure out what was wrong. What added confusion is I accidentally added some warmer water to aquarium, so I expected the watee to be a bit warmer. But then the temperature never went down. Once I realized that the water temperature seemed to be coolee than what thrme thermometer was reading I figured there might be something wrong with the thermometer itself. Turns out it was off by 4 degrees, which makes sense because it kept showing 84F when i had the heater set to 80F. Poor fishy had to go through so much messing around with the temperature. Wah.

I just bought a glass thermometer looks like that one and it was in the sun for a few hours in the shipping box I let it cool down in water and put it in my tank. It says my tank water is 81 degrees F and when I touch the water it feels much colder than 81
@TheFishTankGuy8 жыл бұрын
Well, 81 degrees outside and 81 degrees in the water are very different. Consider going swimming...a pool that 81 degrees might feel pretty cold until your body gets used to it. Maybe try a 2nd thermometer just to re-assure yourself. By the way, 81 is pretty hot for a tank, I would recommend cutting it down to 78-79.
@sergeileshchinsky3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately that does'n not guaranty that it's still showing accurate +20 or +30C. Deviation could be significant and keep increasing further from 0C.

I was worried my tank was too hot per my thermometer. After trying your test, I think it's okay. Your reading was below target mark. mine is like three dashes above the mark. Am I right in that the water in cooler then what the thermometer is saying by this test?
@TheFishTankGuy7 жыл бұрын
Yes...that likely indicates the thermometer if off by a bit, erring on the side of heat...basically your tank is a few degrees cooler than the thermometer is reading :/

Hello! I bought that same thermometer from Imagitarium. I set it up inside the tank like a week ago, and it's usually at 81, even if it's night, day, cold, hot or if I turn on the a/c. I think I''ve only seen it at 80 and 82, but mostly 81. Btw, I live in the Caribbean, so it's usually hot, even at midnight many times. I don't use a heater. Mine doesn't have the yellow lines, it's all green from like 76-80 I think. So I'm usually 1 or 2 above the perfect green recommended area, which I'm guessing is not that bad. But anyway, I hope my thermometer is working well... Seeing it not change/at 81 all the time, worries me.

What happens of the bottom of that thermometer falls out in your fish tank? Is it just metal the small balls?
@practicalguy9736 жыл бұрын
I dont think its that easy. Maybe the sweet spot is 0C on your thermometer. If the tube that the red liquid shoots up is just slightly bigger or smaller in diameter the red fluid that goes up for hotter temperatures could be far off. I think you need something that can calibrate high temps also. The the ice test works for the bottom of the scale and if something confirms the top part of the scale then all in the middle should be accurate.
@practicalguy9736 жыл бұрын
Realizing that is sort of confusing to read. All I'm saying is if the cylinder that holds the red liquid is example 0.25mm larger diameter due to manufacturing defects then as the liquid fills the cylinder it wont read accurately. Simple math, volume of a cylinder!

Hello there friend where did you buy it thanks please let me know so I can go ahead and purchase one right away thanks
@magencrisis16824 жыл бұрын
I came out with a way to check the accuracy that _in theory_ should work. First you get a mercury thermometer from a pharmacy. Those go through very strict standards for accuracy. You get water that's 35 degrees Celsius or above, put both the pharmacy thermometer in there along with the aquarium one, wait for 6 minutes or so and compare the readings.

I have one just like that and the temp says the same thing. Like my temp was pretty warm when I put my hand in it and it said 80. It didn't feel like 80 so I got a cup out some ice for a few hours and it still says 80

Busted thermometer eh?
@showeryourselfwithhappines16274 жыл бұрын
I have one just like that but I just noticed on the bottom with the balls there is some kind of thing barrier around it and on the red .. It looks like when water evaporates and creates fog. But it isn't fog its some kind of substance
@DeLoMioRD2827 жыл бұрын
Do i read where the red line is? And for some reason the red line on my thermometer has stayed in the same spot for more then 2 hours is that accurate?
@TheFishTankGuy7 жыл бұрын
Top of the red line is your current temperature, yes. If it's been in the same spot in the ice water...yeah, that's fine. If you've changed where the thermometer is and it's still not moving...yeah, it might be a bum one.

Not all thermometers (and heaters) are created equally. If you have confidence that your thermometer is reading the proper temperature, just make sure your heater maintains that temp, despite what the heater thinks it's set at!
