So how often is low oil pressure the pump compared to other causes. I have found multiple causes but no data on how often they are the problem 1) Oil pump 2) Oil Cap failure of some kind 3) Pickup screen for oil pump partially clogged (requires removing oil pan to investigate which cost you a gasket as well as the oil if not reused.) 4) Idle speed too low. This could be caused by many factors from spark plugs needing cleaning or replacement, to filters, to many other things. Easy test would be to slightly increase idle speed and see if that solves it. 5) Low Oil 6) Incorrect oil. If the oil used is thinner than the type needed for the vehicle it can not pump properly. Often caused by high school drop outs working at oil change shops. 7) Faulty Oil Pressure Sensor 8) Faulty Wiring to Sensor I'm sure there are more causes and most of these are far less expensive or difficult to fix than a bad oil pump. Reason I ask my friend has f150, had low oil pressure warning when idling. He takes it to dealership they supposedly put a pressure gauge on it, determined the pressure was low, then replaced the sensor, charged him $300 and sent him on his way. I'm like? WTF? if they checked and the pressure was low then that proves the sensor is working right. Needless to say the next day the warning light comes on again. He takes it back, they say. Its the oil pump and estimate repairs at $3,500. The most expensive estimates I can find elsewhere run at most $1400 to change the oil pump. Furthermore they have no investigated any of the other potential causes for low oil pressure. They just jump to the conclusion that it must be the pump. I find this incredibly suspicious.

Mine is number 3 that pipe strainer inside the oil pan is clogged. I cleaned it snd back to normal.

I realize this is an old comment but I just had the same issue with a 2012 f150. The electric connector that plugs to the sensor gets oil in it and needs cleaned with an automotive electrical cleaner. Once that’s done the low oil pressure at idle warning doesn’t get triggered by a fault in the connection.

@@MrLaydownsally In this case it did actually turn out to be the pump. They were still asking about 4x more to repair it than it should have cost. It's a fairly simple part to change out.
