I recommend Chelating your hair once a month or whenever you feel a build up of products. personally I haven't actually done it since I started using the Monat products in my hair about 6 month ago because they're so natural and cleansing for the hair, there's no buildup of "gunk" which is what Chelating helps remove. if you want to learn more read my section on monat on my website: ellebangs.com/ellebang-monat/

I am upset that you claim to be a professional hairstylist trying to sell people your monat products, when in fact you should know better!! And I'm angry. I'm angry that I have seen a lot of people selling Monat lately, and I've encountered it at work, with very bad results. Results that mean I have clients coming back in to get their colour redone because it won't stay in their hair. And there is NOTHING I CAN DO. There are up to FOURTEEN oils in Monat products. 14. Most of these are too heavy for the hair to absorb, so they sit on top of the hair, coating it in the same way Head & Shoulders or Pantene would coat the hair. It makes it very hard for us hairstylists to colour or lighten the hair, because we now have to somehow strip those oils off the hair. Meanwhile, the hair is getting so heavy that it will fall out. Remember Wen? People are suing Wen because their hair is falling out. Same thing with Monat. There are pages and pages of complaints with the Better Business Bureau about Monat. Please don't waste your money on something that could potentially ruin your hair. I don't care how soft and shiny it makes your hair. It is not a miracle product. It is a bunch of oils coating your hair and hiding the dryness and the damage. I don't care what your home-based rep tells you. I can't guarantee your colour will turn out, I can't guarantee anything once you use this garbage. If you want to spend 2-300 dollars on products, come see me and I'll recommend some really awesome, ethically sourced, naturally derived, plant based products. You'll get twice as many for your money, and you'll have peace of mind knowing that licensed hairstylists back these products, instead of your friend/coworker/random stranger who decided they'd like to get a piece of that pyramid scheme.

Heartly Chase look at your behavior calling her out in a public forum. Proper chain of command is to consult with your colleague give her a chance to correct, if she agrees. If not then come out with your opinion. Your weak ethics and lack of loyalty is not someone I would trust to do business with nor my hair.

Heartly Chase you mention law suits, pages and pages of complaints? This is how mass hysteria starts someone screams the sky is falling and everyone runs. First off do you know how many products you currently endorse that have lawsuits pending? Do you know how many complaints never see the "pages and pages" you mention? And of all the lawsuits how many were substantiated? And of those awarded what was the reason? Mislabeling, mishandling are common product suits that are won. Common in many products you currently use. Not the fault of the product. Oh well I should probably find a cave to live in considering ( insert heavy sigh and eye roll)

Step one: Wash hair throughly with Dawn scalp to ends. Leave in then rinse. Step two: Put in lemon juice starting at the scalp to ends don't touch hair too much once it's in. Leave in about a minute. Rinse. Step three: Use hair mask or deep conditioner or regular conditioner. Leave in hair about 5 mins. I wrote this out for myself. I don't remember to do it often enough to remember the directions.

I cannot express how grateful I am, to have found your video! I am a naturally platinum blonde but wanted it whiter - then had an overtoning episode with some T18 and wound up purple. I did this exactly as you suggested and it is 100% fixed! Looks and feels healthy and bright platinum, all the lavender/grey is gone! So appreciate the great advice!

I used Elle's treatment above. Dawn dish detergent and lemon juice followed by a moisturizing conditioner. I followed her directions and my hair feels like I have used very expensive products. Her timing is important on how long you leave in your hair. In one of the comments it writes out the directions or you can take the time and listen to her directions carefully. I did use a cheaper dish soap than dawn and a cheaper moisturizing conditioner - but it still works amazingly.

ellebangs you mention not to do this on dyed red hair, I assume because it will strip the colour.... would this work as a less damaging way to start stripping red pigment out of the hair? (I'm tired of the red - it's about a 6RV right now). I was going to do a bleach wash but thought about trying this first to get rid of some of the pigment so that there's less to bleach? I watched your colour and toning videos and learned a lot (all of it came out great) when I was blonde. I know I'm going to have orange hair when I remove the red.. just hoping to find a way for it to be less orange lol. My plan right now is to either do a colour remover or bleach wash then do a demi dark ashy blonde to try to counter act the orange...

I just had to comment that I followed the directions exactly this morning and this works amazingly well! Dawn is less than $3 for a big bottle, and you only need a bit. After I put the lemon juice in, I thought it would feel awful and dry, but it immediately felt like silk. Then I followed with a deep conditioner from a hair color kit. My hair is very thick, color treated, and very wavy, so I usually have to add lots of products to tame it. After this, I only added argan oil to the ends and blew it dry. It even seemed like it took less time to dry and it looks beautiful and silky. Thank you!

So I have been in a weird hair faze lately. I went from ombré blonde to red recently and decided just recently to go back to full blonde. Biggest mistake ever to do it on my own for the first time, but definitely a lesson learned! The blonde came out super yellow and burned my hair sooo bad! I had super damaged and dry hair. I was to the point where I wanted to cry! I ruined my hair! I ended up putting a toner in and hated it even more. The color wasn’t what I wanted. I’m very impatient and wanted to fix it ASAP but couldn’t find any videos on KZbin to tell me how, until I came across this video! Oh My God! People this feels like legit magic in a matter of minutes! I am a true testimony to this. I used Dawn, Lemmon and a hydrating conditioner mask. My hair feels super soft, shiny and the color even looks beautiful! Just the color I wanted! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! A million times! Try this people!!!

I love your videos! Since my amazing French hairdresser retired who I was with for 10 years I’ve had a hard time getting an appointment with highly reputable hairdressers in the south Florida area so I gave up and started doing my own cut and color. All was well until I decided to tone. My hairdresser always told me that ash was not good for my skin tone and OMG! He was so right.I followed this video, but decide to add conditioner to the lemon and I also kelp it away from my scalp because it can irritate the scalp. I left it on for a couple hours spaying water periodically to keep it activated and voila! My hair is back to a level 9 buttery blonde. I’m so grateful!!! Thank you so much for all you do to help us diy’ers get excellent results. 💖

I've been struggling so much going from dark brunette back to blonde and my hair has never been so stiff and lifeless. I watched this video after I got a third highlight done just yesterday and tried this the same day (my hair dresser had not washed out all of the bleach by accident); I was so amazed I literally was yelling "yes, yes, yes" and was finally smiling about my hair again into the mirror after months of continuous bleaching and hair treatments. It brought my hair back to its soft and silky self and I followed with a purple shampoo right after the lemon in the shower and I just can't thank you enough. Throughout this entire process of going back to blonde, you have been so encouraging to me. The way I chelate is to put about 10 drops of essential oil in my shampoo (I usually use teatree) and let the shampoo sit for a couple of minutes. Then when I condition I put about 10 drops of lavender essential oil in the conditioner. It totally removes buildup and won't damage the hair at all.

This is not chelation. Chelation is the removal of heavy metals. Trust me, I taught science for 20 years. This is simply a way to remove build up on hair.

If I could give this video a million thumbs up, I would!! I had done a high lift color on my hair and then toned after to neutralize my roots to match the rest of my hair and somehow all of my hair ended up a streaky lavender/violet. After frantically googling how to get rid of the lavender, I stumbled upon this video. IT WORKED AMAZINGLY!!! I color and tone my hair a lot and often over-tone, but this time it was just too much and hadn’t toned my roots at all. Chelating my hair removed ALL of the over-tone and left it silvery white and soft. (I still need to correct my orange roots with blue shampoo, but I’ll take what I can get.) Although it didn’t leave my hair as soft and frizz-free as I’d like, I was amazed at how well it corrected the color/over-tone. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Keep in mind that this is only going to work for certain types of hair, as a hispanic woman having more of a reddish hair pigmentation(as many other ethnic backgrounds do) it did quite a number on my hair! My hair turned orange and brittle. Almost two years later, I’m still working on getting rid of the orangie undertone. I really wish that there would have been a type of comment or disclaimer disclosing that this isn’t for all hair types.

I tried it and the result is amazing! I had my hair coloured last year, have my own hair growing now so the dyed part has become dull and unmanageable. After chelating it's soft, manageable and shiny. Like the hair I had in childhood. Being in UK I used Fairy original the green one, lemon and after rinsing used conditioner for about 10 minutes. Will be applying this method whenever needed, to bring my hair back to life. Thanks, ellebangs!

carefull to do this and then put a silicone product ...of course it wil feel that way...it is silicone! (dimethicone and other names)... it coats your hair, is water-resistant...in the lond run there is hair breakage cause hair can´t get hydrated, it is isolated because of the silicone... I only use silicone free conditioner, never going back... so then hair can get moisture :)

So before I went out and bought dawn, I did a little research on chelation. I looked at dawn's ingredients and while I see sodium lauryl sulfate, which is great if you want to clarify your hair (it will also strip all natural oils which is kind of a necessary evil if you want to strip all residue from your hair), it does not contain any cheating agents that will bind to minerals from hard water or swimming. If you truly want to chelate your hair, the most common chelating agents in cosmetics are disodium edta, tetrasodium edta, and trisodium citrate. While trisodium citrate and citric acid (found in lemon juice) are related, sodium citrate is the salt of citric acid and so it has different chemical properties. If you want to chelate your hair I would recommend a chelating shampoo such as pureology purify or a cheaper one that has good reviews. Please correct me if I messed up my research. I do appreciate you taking the time to do this video since I didn't even realize the reason my hair is so dull is from my hard water, thanks:)

Melissa R you really should only use this method if your blonde hair is dull or overly toned or you have natural color. For most people, it leaves the hair a brighter blonde but if your hair has underlying yellow or brass, it will expose it!

I was skeptical, even with all the people who said it worked. The only difference is I used an actual hair mask, a trail sample, with argan in it. My hair was still semi frizzy after I blew it out. My hair is always like that though, even when a salon does it. It was noticeably softer though. But today is day two and just got up an hour ago. OMG ITS SOOOOOOOOO SMOOTH AND SOFT AND AMAZING! Its baby soft! I have two on girls, one with really thick and long hair, and am mm going to try it on them.

Hey Folks, natural bright blonde here. I went to a salon to get reverse balayage, I spent like 350$ buck to do it. My roots and low lights were GREY like solid grey. But the placement was so cute. I didn't want to remove everything I just needed to knock it down. I used this exact method, but with a lime and palmolive soap. It's what I had around. My hair looks amazing!!! Honestly should have looked and felt like this after $350. Glad I didn't have to use anything harmful to fix it

Especially for those with bleach blonde hair, it’s super damaged already. Especially before processing? I wouldn't recommend this for dry curly hair, Mama. I tried it and my hair acted as if it wanted to lock up (with very little manipulation while "shampooing"), and it was so terribly tangled. Took an entire jar of deep hydrating hair mask and almost two hours to very carefully detangle my ends. My hair felt nice and soft afterward, but my hair usually feels about the same way after a wash and deep condition. I definitely don't think this is meant for dry curly hair.

Lemon/lime is acidic though? I use vinegar to wash my hair and hear lemon has a similar result. It does clean your hair from excessive oil and also closes the cuticle -which is good for bleached/porous hair in order to get a more even color and smother bar shaft. Is that what the method in this video is trying to explain?
