Watch this video before you buy a chess clock! Are you looking for the perfect chess clock? In this video I discuss why you should/shouldn't buy a chess clock, and which ones are worth buying.
This video does not address "classic" chess clocks i.e. the vintage analogue ones which do not allow increment because... why would you want one except for decoration.
In this video I also discuss the three FIDE-approved DGT clocks: DGT2010, DGT2500, and DGT3000, including current prices and pros and cons.
Chess Clocks:
digitalgametec.... (I recommend the DGT3000)
tempestclock.c... (15% off with code LULA15)
DGT clocks are resold at all kinds of chess/games shops and major retailers online.

As ugly as is it, everyone knows it. With this clock, at least there is always someone able to set it up Please forgive me, I try my best to defend it (I don't even know why I do so...)

DGT 2500 is more visible to see who’s on move. The top bar changes color so to speak, in addition to seeing which side is raised. The color change on move and lower profile and maybe better slanted digits seem like cool features. Thank you so much for your videos!

I bought my first chess clock 2 years ago off ebay just before my first competitive tournament and practiced, making the move pressing the clock with the same hand and writing the move all night long before the first game to control my anxiety. Now its so second nature to me that I was playing a simul against GM Gawain Jones at GCL and was acting out pressing an imaginary clock after every move that I annoyed the kid next to me and I think I made Gawain smile.

I have recently revisited chess after losing a friend that played chess with me over a decade ago and I am thinking about trying a tournament for the first time in my life🫣 I am trying to learn how to write the moves and work the clock and don’t want to embarrass myself. It is in a month and I am having some anxiety about it 😩 great story though thanks for sharing

At a super GM level using the chess clock on an app is no longer an option because you have to leave your mobile phone hidden in the toilet (or in your sock for the oldschoolers) and also you are wanting to run some other apps during your game of chess.

When DGT2500 was released, it was presented as a replacement for DGT2010 which makes a lot of sense. As it lacks some of the versatility of DGT3000 and also the option to connect to the e-boards, the assumption was that it would be followed by another model aiming to replace DGT3000, providing all its features (including the e-board connectivity) combined with better display and easier to recognise lever of DGT2500. But for some reason this never happened. As for DGT2010 and other models only showing second once you get below 60 minutes (or even 20 in case of DGT XL, I think), what I dislike most is that there is often an interval when one side still shows hours and minutes and the other already shows minutes and seconds which can be quite confusing. Thankfully I mostly meet them in rapid games which either already start below the threshold or get there soon.

My favorite chess clock is the Z-Mart II, or ZMF II, chess clock. Bright old-school LED displays, perfect if you're playing in low light, and easy to spy your time across the room. It has different color options too (my favorite is orange). Buttons respond to a light tap of your fingertips; no need to push or slam down buttons. It has all the standard programmable options for USCF or FIDE tournament play too. I wouldn't call it an "off-brand" clock, as they're a pretty popular second option with (after the ubiquitous DGT clocks) players at clubs I habituate. They're actually a modified version of the original Chronos clocks that once ruled the digital chess clock world.

Does using the phone with the Tempest keep the phone screen unlocked like a video would? Would there be an awkward moment when you have to unlock your phone mid-game to resume using the clock? Great video, very useful!

I feel like a simple USB device you can plug into a phone would work well with an accompanying app. Something tactile to press for phones with cases that allow them to stand on their side. And much more portable than the Tempest thing.

I own the DGT 3000 faux wood a DGT PI and a Chronos. Why do you want back lighting? Are you playing chess in very dark bars. I can understand the seconds display gripe you have but back lighting is not a needed feature. Even when playing outside and in direct sunlight it is easy to see the time on all my aforementioned clocks.

PLEASE---Tell me how to set both primary AND secondary time controls on a DGT North American clock. (Example: G/90 and 30 min. secondary) Direction book in the box doesn't say, and tournament directors expect one to "just know" this. 😖

The DGT 2010 is not a bad chess clock at all in my opinion, and the situation you mentioned seems very superficial. After having played in many Fide rated tournaments, seeing the seconds before you're under a hour shouldn't really matter. Except DGT, the LEAP clocks are good budget clocks as well.

I first started crushing my friends at chess in 1965. You whippersnappers may not realize it, but chess with a clock is an abomination. What's the rush? Clocks are for people who secretly hate chess and want to see the business over and done as quickly as possible. It's like seeing how fast you can finish off a box of expensive cigars, or how quickly you can blast through an art museum without slowing down to see the exhibits. Or maybe eliminating fine art portraiture and replacing it with paint-by-numbers, and later thinking it's just as good. All this is the fault of players who have allowed self-styled Federations to turn a classic game into a mere stunt. You win a real chess game by your moves, not by your time. Admittedly, I do have a clock - an oldie with dials and stuff - but have never used it; I inherited it and it just doesn't feel right to treat it like it deserves, by pitching it in the bin. 99% of people reading this will have not the foggiest idea of what I'm talking about. Too bad. Chess by the clock has made the world a poorer place.

My friends and I suck at chess but we like to play for fun. We can play more games in the same amount of time with a chess clock. One of our friends is halfway decent at chess so we give him less time on the clock to give us a chance to beat him. We don’t beat him but we have fun anyway!😂

Hey there old timer, I respect your comment but politely disagree. Truth is… the clock adds a competitive aspect to the game. I go to chess club at 2 and expected to be back by 6pm when my wife gets home. Sorry, but don’t see myself playing til midnight cause it’s a rook endgame and you played bunch of rook moves and only 2 pawns moves in one whole hour and I missed dinner and a movie with the missy’s ; ) Capeesh?
