Thank you Julia, very helpful advice as always. Our rink in Wales has been closed for 8 months now due to the pandemic and won't be opening until some point next year😔. As a beginner, being off ice for that long is tough, so I've been saving up to get private coaching for the first time. Hopefully by next spring/summer we'll be re opened 🤞and I can begin my search for a coach! What an amazing journey you have had with your lovely coach xxx
@CoachJulia4 жыл бұрын
Oh my word, that is such a long time for your rink to be closed! I am sorry to hear that. Hopefully you can practice your skills off ice and keep up some strength training so you don’t have as much of a mountain to climb when the ice opens back up.

Ok so I’m 14 years old almost 15 and I really want to get into figure skating. I already know the basics like how to skate forwards and backwards but I’m afraid that I’m to old. So should I try and get a coach or would it be a waste of time. And would someone be ok with teaching someone as old as me?
@CoachJulia4 жыл бұрын
That is a great question. It is never to late to learn, I have taught people who began in their teens and they are doing double rotation jumps now. But it really just depends on what your goals are. If you are trying to go to the Olympics, then it is definitely to late for that. But there are still lots of opportunities for you to compete, even internationally. There are also ice shows that you can be a part of performing in, collegiate competition teams, etc. I’d say go for it if it is something you want to do!

@CoachJulia4 жыл бұрын
Well, they you have just got to make the most of whatever instruction you can get. Pay close attention if you are in group classes, study online tutorials, etc. Believe it or not though, I paid for all of my ice skating from the time I was 12. Every session, lesson, competition, skating dress, pair of skates, Every Single Thing, I paid for myself. Even my transportation to and from the rink. When we went to competitions, I had to save up to get a hotel. If skating is something you really want to do, you just have to find your own way sometime.

What are signs that a coach isnt good for u? My boyfriend has a Russian coach who was on the National Team a few years ago. He has been coaching him for the past couple of months but from time to time, he would be a no show at their free style sessions and would alert him after the fact. To me, its a sign that he might not be the best fit as this is becoming increasingly frequent. He is also quite younger than us. I believe he is 21. What should we do?
@carrieli91632 жыл бұрын
Coach Julia, I’m a beginner adult skater looking to find a personal coach. There’s this Russian coach at my rink who was the 1988 Olympic silver medalist. But I just had my second ever private lesson with this other coach. I’m not sure if I want to switch coaches. How should I take that step? I don’t want to offend any coaches :(

Thank you Julia, I am so stuck I hope you can help and advice. I am in UK and my little one has been skating since she was 4 and has finished her skate excellence levels (group lessons provided by arena). Her coach was same throughout and progressed with the team from level to 12. they made the groups moved up with same trainer. He is good but as you said a good skater may not be good trainer, but throughout the years I felt that they are trying to get their private bussiness from their group students (which I appreciate) but they have left us with no other choice. Other trainers decline being the tutor in the ice ring as they know you are so and so's student and in fact have said it on my face they cant take other persons clients. please go to him. and if you want female trainer you will have to go to his wife My little one has so much potential that I want to find her a trainer who is passionate at teaching rather than just focused on money and not able to give her all. The next ice ring is miles away from home and difficult to go so far to find a trainer. Please help me find a trainer for her who is not threatened to take up another trainers student.

We have coaches already but they coach in big groups not one on one and it doesn't work for me and my mum and not to mention how horrible the coaches are! One time the main coach came into my class while we were busy skating she started saying horrible things about me and some other students who didn't get things immediately she was so rude to the point the youngest boy in our class(he is around 7-9) started to cry he even went and hid behind me i wanted to hit that coach so hard for making him cry he is the sweetest kid there!!

Around how much did you pay for private lessons? My rink is pretty cheap for example public skate is only $7.50 and LTS lessons only $80!
@CoachJulia4 жыл бұрын
When I first began taking lessons, back in the mid 90s. Private lessons with my coach were $40 per hour. Plus the session was $5. Now, at my home rink, freestyle sessions are $16 (public sessions are not currently open -COVID) and private lessons range from $75 - $108 per hour. We also have LTS lessons which last 13 weeks and I think are around $200, but I don’t know the exact price.
@fatimah34634 жыл бұрын
@@CoachJulia so my rink has freestyle sessions what exactly is that?
@CoachJulia4 жыл бұрын
Freestyle sessions are for people to practice figure skating on. They are not open to hockey players or Soren skaters or general recreational skaters.

@@CoachJulia so if im in LTS class could i go or is it for more advanced figure skaters?
@benlego82734 жыл бұрын
@@fatimah3463 it depends which rink you go to and which rules they have. Sometimes they let anyone in, but sometimes you have to be a certain level in LTS or actively be training with a coach. I think the minimum LTS level to go to freestyle sessions at my local rink is basic 6

I guess Ice Sports Industry is what used to be the Ice Skating Institute. The names have been changed to confuse the innocent (paraphrased from 'Dragnet' - before your time).
@CoachJulia4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they just changed it in the last year or so. I like the old name better, but they are doing so much with rink operations and rink management systems now that I think they wanted their name to reflect that.
