I am a beginner fishkeeper, and I am currently co-owning a betta with a friend. We picked one that looked nice and are trying to give him the best home possible with our small budget. As I/we get older and more experienced, maybe we will try picking the more imperfect ones, but for now, we can’t. It still makes us so sad to see the ones with rips and the ones that are “depressed.”

It's a bit different here in Australia as unless your buying off a wholesaler, it's rare you see bettas in cups. It's really rare to find sick bettas for sale these days, though if you're looking for uncommon colours you're looking to spend $50 - $70 + per a male otherwise they can be around $15 - $20. We've come a long way from selling them in cupps 14 years ago (when I got my first 1 and the lack of variety that you were able to get)

Honestly I don’t think I’ve ever seen an ‘ugly’ betta. Just ones in need of care. Just got my own beautiful hellboy Alf from kg tropical. You can tell he was really well taken care of before I got him into his 16 gallon planted tank. If anyone is looking online I highly recommend checking them out. There are pictures so u do know who you are bringing home. Best wishes in your breeding. It will be interesting to see how the fry come out. Looking forward to it.

You should do an updated version including skull dents and non-smooth top contours as what not to look for. There are so many bettas labeled "High Grade" who have these deformities.

When I got my male betta it was horrible looking, I felt sorry for it, dull colors, fungus on fins and inactive, it was housed completely inappropriate and given low quality food. But today, one year later, perfect fins, active and beautiful…….that is also fun, to make a change if you have the right conditions for the fish. I had to medicate it with anti fungal medicine and so on, but to see the change was amazing.

Great pairs! Be careful with mixing tail types especially crowntail to any other because they usually result in "messy" fin form. Its all in great fun as trial and error, but could potentially be harder to find homes for the ones with messy fins as they're not as desirable as others. Also careful when breeding for pure white or black. Bettas have problems with those two colour pigments as fry of those colours can die on mass without some crossing in their genes.

One deformity I'd be on the lookout for is Diamond Eye, specifically with dragonscale bettas. Some less than ethical breeders or wholesalers sometimes sell Diamond Eye bettas as something special when you're really just getting a blind fish

Honestly a lot of the time I intentionally choose a depressed looking betta. It's surprising how quickly they can turn it around if you put them in an established tank.

I adore that crowntail male! I have a black orchid crowntail male & female, a successful spawning currently under close eye! I followed your system for breeding, and watching the tiny babies is so much fun! Love your three pairs, cant wait to see the projects as they progress.

First pair will have shorter fins than the male longer than the female long fin is dominant. Second pair will make Half sun betta. This is a good choice of colour and a risk but one I've just bred black half sun there's none in Australia atm. Good choice mate they will have nice coloured tails like plakat. Third pair will lose dumbo because it is recessive you may get a couple. Not sure which colour will dominate I'm trying a gold male and black galaxy female next. Good luck mate 😎

Most betta fish you see in the store is not a good representation of what they will look like when you get them home.. if you have a nice tank for them they will definitely perk up their colours will come out their fins will heal and they will be extremely active they are just barely surviving in the little cups in the store

This video should be renamed "How to choose a great betta if you're interested in breeding them". There's nothing wrong with giving a home to a betta who needs a little TLC. My gentle boy Dumbo has lived with my guppies since he was little. He has such long fins and he isnt the greatest swimmer, which hints at a birth defect...but there isnt a day I regret getting him and he is very happy.

My betta has its tail weird, the upper part is pointing down like its actually broken or something, but other than that he is completly okay and never had trouble with anything.

I absoulutly love better . I have kept a female sorority tank. The problems I get, are my bettas, get a big stomach and eventually after about a month die. 😩 My tank is fully cycled. Now the bettas i get are not cheap and would love to keep another female sorority, but.... Any thoughts?

In addition to the other commenter's suggestions, betta sororities put a tremendous amount of stress on the fish, which means parasites and illnesses can easily get the upper hand. You may even have a problem with the source of your bettas, where there are genetic or parasitic issues throughout the supplier's stock.

I always buy bettas from breeders since they are worth your money. They are healthy and in good form already. It's easy for them to groom. Breeders also give you the best advice in grooming bettas.
