I managed to go from keeping my betta in a 3 gallon tank to an almost 30 gallon with a couple tetras and I believe right now hes living his best life
@troyismd4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend that big of a aquariam, in bigger tanks the water flow is higher, which will tire your Betta out very quickly. I recommend 5-10 gallons, which leaves room for your Betta to swim, have decor in the tank, and not to much water movement that the fish can barely swim. But a 10 gallon would be better if you keep him with the tetras.
@silvertiptetra17714 жыл бұрын
troyis man You could adjust the flow and add a lot of plants
@carlflegg4 жыл бұрын
@@troyismd Absolute nonsense. The required turn over rate of a 30 gallon tank, with such a small bio load, would be so low that the average sponge filter would provide adequate biological filtration. Despite that, even with a power filter and no decor, there will be multiple low flow areas within the tank, and the more decor is added the more low flow areas will be created. You have made this comment without knowing whether or not the tank is planted, how it is decorated, what flow rate the filter has, if it is adjustable, if it is sponge filtered rather than power filtered. If OP would've said, "it is in my 30g tank with a fluval FX6 and a 2,000 lph power head" then yes, you would be correct in saying the set up is not acceptable. Giving a fish more space than necessary should never be discouraged.

So... by that logic.. I should remove my betta from my 75 gallon community tank.
@hyojujung23694 жыл бұрын
shortcuts + Note for me 1.intro 0:50 2. Betta tank 1:27 - at least 5 gallons tank for the betta fish -give much space as possible. +dont choose a round fish tank, please. It is hard to check them, not good for their eyes (normally betta fish eyes are 2.0), also hard to put the heater and filtration. +if you decide to buy 2.5 - 3-gallons tank, it is fine too, if you only gonna put heater & betta bed & betta fish. It will be a bit small if you want to put some plants, decorations, and inner filtration. constipation occurs a lot to betta fish when they live in the small space (of course it is not the only reason but mostly because of that) 3. heater 2:19 -mandatory to have a heater unless your room temp is always high. -78~82F / 26~28C + lots of preset heaters you can find from online & offline, or adjustment heater if your betta is sensitive about temp or easily get sick. 4. Filtration 3:20 - yes, you need filtration. Betta needs filtration for fresh and clear water as the other fish require. - sponge or hanging back filter (require the flow control) for betta (betta does not like strong water flow) -recommend small inner aqua filter 3:55 +Betta does the self - harm,( especially if they have beautiful big fins ) because of the strong water flow, water quality, and a bunch of other reasons. +If you got smaller than 3-5 gallons tank, it is your decision to get filtration because of space. But let you know that you must need to do 100% water change every 3-4 days, 20-40% water change daily without filtration. (Depends on the betta's condition and water quality) Change the whole water is stressful to betta, and yes there are turns of the way you can do without change the whole water, but it is true that in a short term you need to change your whole water for the betta, without filtration. So if you do not think that you can do that, want to keep them healthy and happy, get the filtration. ( Need to change water 20-50% every week - 10 days depends on the water quality ) +sometimes the betta fish do not want to get any of the water flow, especially big ear, half-moon, crown betta fish. You can either care without filtration or change the filter. + I feel like there is no right way to care betta,(unless you keep the betta in a small place such as a cup) because they are all different and depends on what they like it, few things will change. 5. Lights 4:40 - Does not require the bright light -How long to keep the light on? 5:06 - again, betta does not require a bunch of lights, but you will need it if you keep the betta with the living plant ( if it located where the natural light is then just a couple of hours at night or depends on your decision.) +betta feels safe when it is dark enough, so if your betta fish have to hang loose,(illness, low condition, stress release) get some box or fabric to cover the tank or sheets on the surface of the tank to cover. 6. Decoration/tank set up -need to make some hidden space to make them feel safe / rest - it does not really matter it is living plant or artificial plant, but make sure it is soft for your betta's safe (can rip up the betta's fin) 7. Food -many kinds of betta fish food -picky about the food -7:25 / 7:49 recommendation of betta fish food +Really picky about the food... +if your betta refuses to eat the food, its because of... 1. they do not like the taste that you give to them ( if you see that they chase your hand or food spoon, or keep playing with the food, then its time to find another one. Do not starve them more than 5-7 days, it will be the cause of the self - harm or illness) 2. their condition is low > check your betta's condition and find out the reason / ready the water conditioner 3. they are full/ just do not want to eat > do not give too many, they will get constipation +Try some of the frozen blood worms if nothing is working, and slowly change to dry one, and then food 8. Mate with betta - 8:39 Link above the video 9. Take care / responsibility - water change, check their appearance for any of illness that they can get, cleaning the tank - lots of different characteristic/personality Thanks for the amazing video for the beginner, it helps a lot to decide what I really need.

I wouldn’t recommend changing the filter cartridge so often, since that’s where all the beneficial bacteria live. By replacing it with a brand new one one a month, that kills the bacteria that breaks down fish excretions. If you feel that your cartridge looks gross, take some of the water from your fish tank and put it in a separate bowl. Then you can just swish the cartridge around, getting things like plant debris, substrate dust, and other stuff off without killing the clean up crew. Hope this helped 😊
@carlflegg4 жыл бұрын
I was going to say this. Make sure you keep your Betta healthy and happy by exposing him to a mini cycle every month? This piece of horrendous advice ruined an otherwise great video. You do not need to change biological filter media until it is physically disintegrating.

Since we are talking about bettas, here's a story on how I got mine: Me and my friend both really wanted betta fish. One day, we went with her mom and brother to pick out hers and I saw a long flowy yellow fin and just HAD to look at him. He had a dark blue body with beautiful long and flowy fins. He was originally at the back of the cup, but swam up to the front when I came to look at him. In my head, I was thinking "I need this betta." By then, my friend had picked her betta which she named Storm. We bought Storm and tank supplies for him aswell as a tank. The next day, me and MY family went back. I was so worried that he wouldn't be there, but then I saw him! Of course, I got him and a tank with supplies. He is now in a 29 gallon tank living with 6 guppies, 4 tetras, 3 angelfish, and 2 cory Catfish. His name is Tsunami!

I am up to 4 female bettas in my community tank (4 seems to be a good stable sorority). The oldest is a dark metallic lavender/black halfmoon. She is the peacekeeper and doesn't tolerate any fighting anywhere in the tank. The next oldest is a while opal with a pale blue sheen on her fins and just a smudge of red at the base of her fins. She is very playful and just likes to hang with the guppies. The third is a black base with red fins with really shiny teal scales over her side and streaked in her tail. She is a bit rambunctious and has challenged my oldest female but runs off as soon as she starts challenging back. Basically she acts tough but ditches as soon as anyone calls her bluff, most of them just ignore her now. The last and newest is a peachy pink with a few black scales scattered around and is gradually getting more silvery scales on her sides. She is very shy and usually stays in the more planted areas. They really do all have different personalities and are very unique.

I’ve had my betta for about a month now and I really want to do right by him. When I found him (sold in one of those sad little petsmart cups) I was just coming to the store for tank supplies, but the moment I saw him I knew I had to get him now, lest he die or be sold by the next time I came by. He had fairly short fins for a male (I even thought it was a girl until I read the label) and they were all torn up, likely from flaring at the ultra-reflective cylindrical cup or fin nipping. He wasn’t particularly shiny either, just yellow and black with some shiny blue patches but not a whole lot. I wasn’t expecting to fall so quickly for such a “plain” fish by betta standards but it was love at first sight!! I worked extra hard to make sure the tank was set up ASAP for him. I had to remove the live plant from his tank bc I guess it took too long for me to transplant to the tank and so it had gotten a lot of bacteria on it that made a film on the surface of the water. The water runs a little cold so I’m gonna try to find a better tank heater, but other than those two things I’m really happy with how it’s coming along. He always comes up to the front of the tank when I approach, and I know responsiveness is a good sign. I try not to overfeed him but sometimes he won’t eat so I do get worried that there’s something stressing him out. I just want him to be happy, at least as much as a fish can be.

I think it is ridiculous that people keep bettas in those tiny ~1 quart containers or little cups. What happened to the "1 gallon of fish per 1 inch of fish"? Bettas are like 2-3 inches long. (Also, I think it is fine how you pronounce 'betta'!)
@ajasawesomeart96254 жыл бұрын
I think it is a little bit easier to pronounce 'betta' the way you do than the way most people pronounce it.

@@OutdoorUrbanMama Yeah I actually have a half-gallon I keep it when a betta is sick. You use a half gallon for a very small females. because in Taiwan betas are sick often so I don't want to stress out their bodies with a large tank at that moment. Usually want to give them a mild methane blue bath soap making you have any illness. They in the medication for about 15 minutes dechlorinated water with methane blue powder. I did was for about a week. I keep them in a half-gallon until they're healthier. Plus I finally found Frozen bloodworms. I found product that's loaded with almond extract because we don't have almond leaves. Thank you Jesus. but after they survived the first month if they're healthy and strong enough they can be moved to a bigger tank. It is a male and larger they get one gallon

Came across some of your vids when I decided to get my 3rd betta ever. I did even more research than I did for my second. Finally figured out the whole tank cycling thing. Bought a male koi betta a week ago and he has been happy as a clam ever since. Hoping to keep him happy for a long time now that I have finally learned how to successfully maintain a tank. However, he was mean to my mystery snail and nipped at him so the mystery snail now has his own tank. So now I decided to have a tank dedicated to snails and hopefully some shrimp someday. That tank will also be my "learn how to have a planted tank" tank. Thanks for the great vids!

Another thing is shape. I kept bettas in those tiny, plastic tanks when I was a kid, but as an adult, I decided to expand their space. In tall, narrow glasses, they love to hide and hang out at the bottom (until they need to breathe), and in wide, shallow bowls, they always look for someplace to hide. I've often thought that the ideal shape would be like a margarita glass, wide and shallow, but with a deeper hole in the middle for the fish to hide in. The problem (other than it being terribly top-heavy and likely to tip over at a moment's notice) is, as always, heating.

Another awesome video from you guys! I bought myself 3 betta females about 2 months ago, unfortunately one of them died, I think there was something was wrong with her when I got her but the other two are doing so well, their colour has come out so much more and they've grown nicely as well. And I definitely think the females are just as great to look at as the males! Also thank you so much for highlighting that betta's shouldnt always be housed in a stupidly small aquarium!

I have two 18 inch long tanks side by side - one betta in each tank - they get along well - unless they lock eyes with each other - then it's on - displaying their frills & making their bodies look bigger, like two roosters - the decent sized tanks, & seeing another betta close by, seems to keep their interest - & once they get to know who you are, they're happy to see you - like a cat or a dog.. Unique fish, the way they use their gills like normal fish, & at the same time they can breath air through their tops, almost like a dolphin or a whale - they sit on rocks & plants & sometimes move around the bottom like amphibians...

When i 1st bought my 1st 50 gallon tank, i did also buy a normal blue betta fish, i do have sand and little light bec i didnt not buy lights yet for a 50 gallon, i have a light for a 5 gallon thats is actually old and dim and put it horizontally to the middle of the aquarium, the stand stretch so it reach both sides horizontally, actually if you swim its kinda like you swimming under a ocean with rain clouds and most of the sides are very dim like storm clouds dim, when i put that betta fish it was amaziing he swim literally around the tank left to right back to front, it looks like he swims his longest dive and do it over again gracefully around the tank for hours he just swim and not usually you see in the aquarium with a betta that he slowly maneuvers the tank and see whats there to see, to me looks like he is just swimming to the open ocean looks very cool when you see it that a betta fish can actually do a long graceful straight swim around the tank believe me its awesome and he didnt stop when i look at him closely swimming ☺️ when i introduce lights decor and other fish, then the attitude stop, i have dry start my aquarium bec of plants and might buy a betta again and see what happens if i can see that attitude again ☺️

I'm literally going out tomorrow to get my first Beta, great timing. My tank has been cycling for 10 weeks with substrate, HOB filter, (are you lovin the jargon and acronyms), thermometer. I put a pinch of food in the tank weekly, no live plants or fish. The only thing I can't get right is the pH. It stays at 6.4 no matter how much API pH 7.0 I put in which is about 2 teaspoons every day for the last 5 days. My tap water is 7.0 so why does change when it's put in the tank?
@Sabuuchi4 жыл бұрын
Water from the tap tends to stabilize after a few days and drops a bit in pH. Tannins leaking into the water is also a way pH naturally drops. If you have any driftwood, Indian almond leaves or tea bags (yes people add them to tanks) it'll drop the pH a few decimals.
