How to Choose a Machine Quilting Ruler

I haven’t started quilting yet. I’m trying to learn terminology of quilts. I’ve never heard of machine ruler foot and machine ruler!! I just started sewing and I’m only sewing burrito pillow cases. Learning as I go watching so many Vedros. Thank you for this video. I don’t know what you’re talking about. Which is good so I can see videos with these terms.

I use the Natalia Bonner mini rulers -they have both straight and curved sides, and really make my quilting look good

Great demo on using different rulers. Appreciate your expertise Kim! One concern…. I’ve never been cautioned regarding using a low shank vs high shank machine! Only caution was to make absolutely sure you use a ruler foot designed for your machine when using a quilting ruler. I’ve just invested in several rulers and the correct machine ruler foot for my machine and was looking forward to practicing this weekend. Now, I’m a bit concerned. Can you elaborate further on your caution of high shank vs low shank please? TYIA!

If you have a low shank sewing machine, the high shank ruler is too thick to fit around the back of the presser foot. The presser foot comes down too low for the high shank rulers and might hit the ruler as you quilt. You might be able to use a high shank ruler around the front and sides of a low shank foot but you won't be able to use the ruler at the back of the foot.

NO ONE else ever mentioned this very important, simple caution regarding their rulers! Can not thank you enough! Last thing I or any others would want to do is destroy our sewing machines with a quilting ruler! Ugh😭 💕🧵

Also if you were to use a low shank ruler with a high shank machine, the ruler could slip under the ruler foot and your needle could hit it and be damaged or break.
