A few years ago, I started out with buying the tubes of the six colors in the Daniel Smith Essentials set (basically six colors, a warm primary set and a cold primary set). I added two earth colors: Sienna and Umber. One doesn't need much colors to start out. It's better to use a few good quality paints than many mediocre paints. And watercolor paints last very long ;-) I'm very happy with my DS paints.

I always make color swatches of the watercolor paints to know what they look like and to check quality, how they wash , glaze , intensity, lifting, etc. it gives you a good idea of how they will be to use. Some watercolor colors just work better than others. Some you can lift easily and others you can’t. It depends on what kind of technique you use and what you’re painting.

I think the most important thing in watercolour painting is the paper. Whether you use a good brush or poor brush, good paint or poor paint, if the paper buckles and desintegrates, nothing is going to work well. Even with cheap watercolor paints and substandard brush it is still possible to paint with pleasure on good paper. Good quality paint even makes the end result much more vibrant! And I like my synthetic nr.6 brush because it keeps its shape. I also have a sable brush, but it feels like I'm painting with a wet cat tail ;-)

Thank you again for good solid sense. I've got a few palettes but am looking forward to a simple empty (12 half-pan but with a central gap to allow me to add more full or half pans) box from China at about £4.50 GBP!! If it turns out satisfactory I'll buy another.* I'm about to kit it out with mainly White Knights /St Petersburg colours when it arrives with a few other colours from other brands as something of an experiment. I learned the W&N Proff'l are made in France and Cotman in China . So much for my previous loyalty to home brands! As a pensioner, my budget is limited and so your advice is well received. I'm afraid that Danny Smith is in another economic realm as far as I'm concerned. Many years ago when I was selling pen and wash, I accumulated a large palette of W&N Artists Proff'l Grade colours but in the end found it a little overwhelming. *I might buy a 24 or 48 half-pan empty palette and gradually fill it with full pans as I go along. Every good wish and thanks from Paul in the UK

I like Cotman and use them more than the other brands I have. I use the watercolor pens, but not for painting pictures like using regular watercolor. I use them for design work.
@opal778 жыл бұрын
I also do not really see any difference between rewetting dried colours (Or premade pans) and fresh squeezed tube colour.The only other noticeable difference is you might find is that you can never really get that thick sticky consistency from fresh squeezed paint back, which may be useful for certain dryer techniques. On that note however, I like to dry my paint in half pans as well, and I still have my tubes of fresh color just in case I need them. I remember seeing a video of yours about the difference of pans and tubes as a focus, and I completely agree with your point about dried tube colour being easier to activate than an already made pan. I believe the reason for this is that in the pan process the paint is very compacted, I'm not sure if it has less binder, but I do notice you really have to scrub them to get more paint.I actually enjoy watching recommendation videos, though I already have my own travel box. The W&N Field plus box can carry 12 colours, and it has a lot of mixing room as I really like to premix a lot of color before I get painting. The water bottle and detachable "water wells" would be nice if I ever attempt some outdoor painting, but the water would likely get dirty very quickly with how small they are, and I like to keep my color clean. In any case enough of my ramblings ^-^' thank you for posting videos like these, I've really enjoyed your channel thusfar, and I look forward to future watercolor content! I would love to see more real time painting demonstrations along with your reviews. I may look up that book, perhaps it's sold used on ebay or amazon. Understanding the pigments may be a good step in my learning process.
@teohyc8 жыл бұрын
Wow. Thanks for the long comment. Yeah, one of the big advantage of tubes is you can mix larger volume of paint much faster. Whenever I work on larger pieces, I always feel limited by the size of the half pans. The WN field box is nice. Nowadays I prefer the boxes that are bigger because they have larger mixing areas. Those real time painting demos are more tedious to produce, which is why there are fewer of those.

I have the small Rembrandt box that is shown in the video. I was bugged because one mixing tray droops down and was not very helpful if I was using the thumb hold. That part doesn't have sides that bend up either like on some other brands of boxes. I spent so much on it because it contained the Rembrandt paints) that I wanted to get plenty of use out of it plus I do like its small thin compact size. I found that by putting a small piece of kneaded eraser behind the mixing tray in the crease it will hold the tray up so it sticks out straight. Also, I roll two pieces of kneaded eraser very thin and stick them on the sides of the tray to prevent dripping from those areas. After my sketching sessions I remove them so I can close up my set. Another modification: I removed the middle tray and glued magnets on all my pans so they could rest in the middle section, and added more colors too. The box holds a lot more this way and I like being able to move my pans around for different sketches. This also gives me room for two travel brushes. About the Rembrandt paints. I love their oil paints but not so in love with the watercolors. Two of the colors, viridian and one of the blues, are very weak. If I had it to do over again, I would buy a small Schminke set -- I like their colors better.
@teohyc7 жыл бұрын

*I watched another person's video on Rembrandt watercolors and he also commented on the viridian and cobalt blue but then a comment-er stated the reason the colors seem weak is because they are the pure pigment and that is their nature. I'm used to Winsor green and thalo blue and thalo green. I will try to appreciate and use them more. Ha.

+Linda Bloom I've not used Holbein before. A friend of mine said they are good value for money. He has reviewed the tube paints at www.parkablogs.com/picture/review-holbein-artists-watercolor As for Daler Rowney Aquafine, I would not recommend it as I found the pans to be too hard. It's very difficult to dissolve the pans. I also find some colours to be a bit chalky. It was my first watercolour box set and I did not manage to finish using it. For student brands, I would recommend Winsor & Newton Cotman instead. See www.parkablogs.com/content/review-winsor-newton-cotman-watercolors-sketchers-box

Have you heard anything about Rembrandt Artist Grade? They are so inexpensive (relatively) in Europe, and so pricey in the US. I only use pans, but I'd love to hear from someone who has a set of them. Linda. PS I like the colorcharts too. Schmincke sure shows well in them.
@teohyc9 жыл бұрын
+Linda Bloom I've used a lot of box sets from different brands and if they are artist quality paints, they are actually quite similar in quality and it will be difficult to tell them apart unless you paint them specifically to compare. Nowadays, I prefer getting tubes and squeeze them into pans. Each pan has a 2ml capacity and each 15ml tube can fill it several times. I've heard of Rembrandt but I've not used it before so can't really say anything about it. I would recommend buying brands that are easily available around where you stay, or does not cost too much to ship. The only brand I want to highlight is Kremer Pigments which I feel is very different from other brands. Their 14-colour full pan set (USD $80) has a lot of granulating paints and it's really wonderful to work with them. The result is very different from any other brands I've used. Check out the colour chart video I've created at kzbin.info/www/bejne/epa1kmx_i75pabc

Hi, I've watched several of your videos in the last couple of weeks as I've just started painting myself. Thanks so much, they are very helpful. I cant remember if it was in this one or another but you mentioned that you can spray something on plastic palettes to make the paint sit better in the mixing wells (more like they do on a porcelain or tin palette). What was it exactly? Thanks
@teohyc8 жыл бұрын
+AsheryW Hi. The spraying is to wet the pans so that they will be easier to pick up with the brush. I've friends who bring out small spray bottles. I just use my brush to put drops of water onto the colours I want to use.
@AsheryW8 жыл бұрын
+Teoh Yi Chie sorry, I meant on the actual mixing area, not the paint pans. It sounded like you said 'animal spray' but I have no idea what that is. I figured maybe you meant some kind of fixative spay or something that might prevent the paint from beading while you're trying to mix colours.

+AsheryW I'm not sure if I have mentioned that before. It's probably not me

+Teoh Yi Chie OK, sorry. Thanks for your replies. Keep up the great work

Can you actually keep rehydrating the water color on your half pan? Just wondering if it's normal to continuous hydrate and then dry it out and then rehydrate each time you use it. Does the rehydration change the properties of the color?
@teohyc9 жыл бұрын
+onechristmaswish If you rehydrate, it will be faster to paint with the watercolour. That's because the watercolour is already wet and will mix easier and faster. This is useful when you want to switch from one colour to another colour quick. E.g. You want to prevent your paint from drying before you add your next colour (which should be hydrated or pre-mixed in advanced).
@teohyc9 жыл бұрын
+onechristmaswish There should be no difference in the watercolour when you rehydrate. The only difference is, it's faster to mix tube compared to pan because they are already soft to begin with.

Will mungyo fall under cheaper watercolors compared to Winsor and newton?

I have not tried that before so I cannot say much

Great video! One question: if I buy a metal tin I will be able to fit (bending the pan holder) pans from all brands?
@teohyc7 жыл бұрын
Most pans are standard sizes so you should have no problem.
@susanyoung16006 жыл бұрын
Federico Cabassi. Yarka will not fit.

if you sqeeze tube paint in the pan, doesn't it run out if you put that in your backback? or does it dry enough to not run?
@teohyc7 жыл бұрын
You have to let it dry properly. Best to put under the sun with the watercolour box closed with a tiny gap to let water vapour out. Some brands are difficult to dry, e.g. M Graham (with honey).

I don't want to feel too stupid. I got TOO MANY colors it was before I met you. So, to say I have a lot of colors...I have a lot of blues, yellows, reds - I started with Daniel Smith 15 ml tubes

any tips on how to stop the beading on my new plastic watercolor palette? When i mix colors they tend to separate and not mix well
@teohyc8 жыл бұрын
+Ducky Dubz Plastic palettes tend to have that problem. Don't worry about it. Just mix longer if you want the colours to mix completely.

Hi :) Thanks for the video. it helps me a lot as an beginner. Im choosing between winsor and newton 24 artist colors thin metal and Schmincke HORADAM® Aquarell Metallkasten 12 1/2 pan. I'm wondering if u can add more tin into the 12 Schmincke or 24 thin metal winsor?
@teohyc8 жыл бұрын
+Auranicha Kaewtrakoolchote If you take out the pan holder inside the box, you can fit in more pans. The 12 half pan box can fit 24 half pans.
@thisisnotnw8 жыл бұрын
+Teoh Yi Chie thank you. Then i'll go with the schmincke and buy extra pans for my metallic colors.

Teoh, whats your opinion of Water-soluble markers like Tombow?
@teohyc8 жыл бұрын
+RedWhiteNBlade I've not used them before so I can't comment much. They should be good for practice but since they are water-soluble I don't suppose the colours are lightfast.

Hello I am new to watercolour and I am thinking of getting the Sakura Koi set - have you tried it?
@teohyc8 жыл бұрын
+mostlymakeup I've not tried them yet although I have a box. Maybe in a few weeks time. They are very affordable though. I like the plastic box.

Hello Teoh, have you ever tried ZECCHI watercolours? It would be nice to have your opinion about them. Thanks, Alex
@teohyc8 жыл бұрын
+Alex WT I've not heard of that brand before. But anyway, it's going to take many months before I can buy any new watercolour paints because I'm trying to use up all the ones I have currently. LOL
@alexweisstrost8 жыл бұрын
+Teoh Yi Chie Thanks Theo, Ithink it is possible to purchase them online on their web shop only. Zecchi Firenze is specialized in ancient pigments for restoring paintings, they look quite interesting. As soon as my Schmincke will be empty ... :) take care A.

Do you ever use liquid watercolors? Like Dr. Ph. Martin's Concentrated Watercolors?
@teohyc8 жыл бұрын
+Airbugg I've not used them before. Maybe in the future. They look interesting.
@Airbugg8 жыл бұрын
+Teoh Yi Chie If you're a watercolor guy you'll LOVE them. The ones I used are the 'Dr. Ph Martin's RADIANT Concentrated watercolors'. Concentrated watercolors are so vibrant! I've also used 'winsor & newton' drawing inks and 'higgins' drawing inks. The only issue for you might be portability. But give them a shot. :)
