Excellent video. Pigment, and NOT names, is the most important factor, which I've learned after burning holes in my pocket. Thank luck I never bought any Cadmiums. Glad you emphasised pigments and opacity for people beginning to build their palettes. Wish I'd seen this video a year or so ago, it would've saved me a fair few quid 😄👍

I used to be addicted to Daniel smith and old Holland, but after using QOR it’s almost the only brand I use now. So rich in pigment and the aquazol makes the paint flow so easily.

Personally, I think the best thing for people to start on are the basic student sets by Schmincke , Lukas, or Van Gogh. They are of good quality and well balanced, containing warm and cool primaries, as well as useful secondaries and earth tones, while containing no real cadmiums, which, as you mentioned, can be a bit difficult. Also, these sets are quite affordable. I think another good starter set is Cotman, but since this set unfortunately includes a lemon yellow that is quite weak and opaque, I would suggest supplementing it with a cool yellow by a different brand. These little sets are great at teaching people the basics of watercolors, and once people have learned enough on them, they will know what they want and need when they choose to invest in more expensive paints.

Great video Teoh! I find it depressing how many watercolour sets and watercolour beginners, books use yellow and cadmium as the two yellows. Two opaque colours (W&N lemon yellow is opaque) that will turn everything to mud and put so many beginners off painting for life. Hazel Soan's Watercolour Rainbow was a game changer for me. I binned those yellows in favour of transparent and Indian and have never looked back. And if were to be buying a new set of watercolours for a friend, I wouldn't buy an off the shelf set - I'd rather buy an empty box or tin (maybe even a wooden cigar box, some empty pans and some blu tak) and fill it with warm and cool transparent versions of three primaries plus a couple of earth colours.

There are some good sets. But one has to be knowledgeable enough to know they are good. The ones I know that are good are the Mission Gold 9-tube set, Daniel Smith 6-tube introductory, M-Graham 5-tube basic and QoR 12-tube. All are tube sets though.
@theartisticactuary
@theartisticactuary 3 жыл бұрын
I admit those are some well balanced sets, Teoh. If I had to choose from those I'd be looking at the Daniel Smiths, partly because they come in a cardboard box rather than a tin. Tubes in a tin feels too wasteful to me - you squeeze some paint out then end up washing all the remains away (if, like me, you like to keep your palette wells clean). Better to get loose tubes and some sort of palette where you can squeeze the tools into pan-sized wells and leave them there. The Daniel Smiths and an empty 6-8 pan palette would make a great combination.
@waymire01
@waymire01 3 жыл бұрын
@@theartisticactuary I pan all my tubes in full pans. I can put them in a tin, take them out, put them in a palette, move them around.. whatever, no waste. You can often remove the tube holders from tin sets with tubes and just pop the pans in the space instead.

It took me a couple of “wrong” sets to finally put together a palette almost identical with the color selection of that Qor set, plus a few special colors I can’t mix myself. I wish I could see a video like this when I just started. This could’ve saved me a lot of money, haha. I remember having a hard time finding a well-balanced introductory set back then. But now it seems that all these major brands have their own beginner friendly color mixing sets. Or maybe I just knew too little back then to even notice these introductory sets existed? :-)

QoR 12 intro set is almost perfect as for a universal color selection (never bought it, though). I am not a huge fan of split primary palettes, but rather I prefer having high-chroma colors distributed more evenly around the color wheel (I’d rather have an ultramarine and phthalo green than phthalo blue, or a magenta and a bright orange than a cool and a warm red). Sets are sad, especially the bigger ones.

I believe Da Vinci has several “starter” sets depending upon the subjects you want to paint! They even have sets of “trio” colors that many different artists have done extensive works with the trio paints! Da Vinci has premade palettes for subjects, like Denise Soden’s wildlife palette! You might consider showing these paints, I believe that Da Vinci paints are professional grade and don’t cost an arm and a leg like the Dan Smith paints or Schmincke paints. I know that availability is a consideration, but with the Internet you can get most any product anywhere in the world! Have you considered doing a video series on the DaVinci sets? Just an idea, thank you for sharing your opinions on these sets. Have a nice day.

Aside from the warm/cool combo and the transparent vs. opaque, I also found vibrancy or hue strength must be considered to have a balance palette. Some colors, like the phthalocyanines and quinacridones will overwhelm other colors and I find using them not only needs deft handling but also mixing color choices to match their strength. This took a bit of sleuthing, especially where permanency & lightfastness are priority.

It has been helpful in teaching me better color theory and mixing.So helpful. I keep a small 6 1/2 pan set of opaque colors in my kit as well but separate. I use them at the end of painting for pops of color almost like a guache. I go through lots of tubes of W&N turquoise light. I don't mix any of them really just straight out of pans. I mix ivory black with DS deep scarlet to get skin tone shadows. (Learned from the artist Nick Runge). Since I started doing that I like to include ivory black in my sets. I have the small Schmincke 12 set and I ended up adding deep scarlet, phthalo turquoise, diox purple, payne's grey, quin coral, and WN burnt sienna to fill it out. I would have removed some of the schmincke pans like the cadmium colors but I'm a completionist, I hate breaking up sets :p

I'm comfortable breaking rules now, like using black mixed with any of the yellows to get greens for landscape painting or white washes for fog and mist. But, a set like Qor's will give anyone, new or experienced, many successful paintings/sketches.

I was first introduced to the split-primary color wheel by Susie Short. She put together her palette based upon that color wheel. The first boxed set that I ever got was called Susie Short's Essential 7. She included New Gamboge as her warm yellow and Hansa Yellow Medium as her cool yellow. I heard you say that Hansa Yellow Medium is not a warm or a cool yellow; but, in my experience with using it, this color does work as a cool yellow. It makes vibrant greens when mixed with a cool blue. At least, it does when mixed with Phthalo Blue, which was the the cool blue that was included in my set. When Daniel Smith decided to create another version of Phthalo Blue, then that blue that was in my set would later be called Phthalo Blue (GS). I remember those days when Daniel Smith's sets had 15 ml tubes of watercolor paints at affordable prices. I have a 12 color set of the Qor paints. I don't recall if the set was advertised as a split primary set; but, it better paint options that the Schminke Horodam set that was marketed as such.

@waymire01 3 жыл бұрын
The most important thing is to decide what you want to do with a set before you buy it. Don't be so concerned about the brand (other than to buy decent paint) or who's name is on it. Do you like to mix colors? If not you want some secondaries and earth tones.. especially the earth tones. If you do you want a split primary for sure. Do you use a mixed grey or black? If so you want burnt sienna and a green to mix with blue and red respectively. Do you only paint landscapes? If so those brights aren't going to be as helpful to you. Do you paint animals? If so what kind? Many birds are full of color, most mammals are not. Figuring this stuff out ahead of time is going to save you a lot of struggle later. Other considerations.. can you get a refill of just one color? Do you want opaque or transparent shades? Does it contain any fugitive shades and if so are you ok with that? Do you use large brushes or large washes? If so a half pan set is going to frustrate you. Have you ever tried this brand? If not you may want to get a couple of tubes or pans before investing in a whole box.

I wish more brands would offer transparent single pigment sets at a reasonable price. This should be the starting point for any painter... yet they are almost non existent (I'm aware of the daniel smith and da vinci split primaries and the mijello pure pigments... the first two are very restrictive and the last is super expensive and hard to get in the US). After buying way too many paints I finally broke down and made my own palette. The granulating/opaque/convenience shades have a purpose.. but they are add-ons for specific uses for me.
@godzandheros

Unfortunately, those pigments are more expensive and therefore reflect in the price of tubes/sets. Watercolour is one of the only mediums where transparent pigments are heavily favoured and also aren't as common/accessible as the opaque ones as they are more readily available because they are used in acrylic and oils, as well as gouache.

@onemig00
@onemig00 3 жыл бұрын
I always thought warm colors have an "orange" feel to them, like the sun warmed them up... If you check out Dr. Oto Kano's channel she'll tell you that it's subjective as some colors are subtle in their warmth or coolness. For me, if it can mix a violet, that's a cool red and a cool blue (magenta and cyan are cool colors)
@justacatwhocantype
@justacatwhocantype 3 жыл бұрын
Think about where it lies on the color wheel, that's the easiest method. If it's a blue, for instance, check whether it is closer to the violets or to the greens. Ot if it is a red, check whether it is closer to the violets or the yellows, and so on. That is the easiest way of doing it. Oftentimes people have a hard time telling between warms and cools when it's not super obvious, and just checking the placement on the colorwheel is a good way of doing it without letting your own confusion get in the way.
@lindyashford7744
@lindyashford7744 3 жыл бұрын
To tell the warm and cool shades you need to either know the pigments or swatch the colours. In short a cool yellow is one that veers slightly towards green a warm yellow veers towards red. A neutral yellow does neither. Likewise a warm red has a hint of yellow, a cool red has a hint of blue. A neutral red does neither. A cool blue has a hint of green and a warm blue has a hint of red. A neutral blue does neither. The last, warm and cool blues seem to be the most difficult to grasp! Maybe because we associate greener shades of blue with actually being warm, rather than their effect when we are painting. This is the easiest formula for remembering the warm/cool relationships. Colour and transparency/opacity are a huge subject, but to start with transparent colours are the easiest to mix. If all you can afford is three colours many ranges will do a CMY option, cyan, magenta, and yellow. This will give you a good range of mixed colours, and is a cheaper option if you want to paint large.

If you look @21:42 the colour wheel shows a big empty space at about 5 o'clock. If you want a vibrant purple (and you should because it is the colour of shadows) I would start with Dioxazine Violet or Ultramarine Violet. A good purple is really impossible to mix. Then choose it's compliment (or the colour of sunlight)... one of the many cool yellows. There you have it, two colours... from there, get to work...

Personally I prefer to use a secondary watercolour palette if I have 6 colours (three primaries and three secondary colours from the opposite side of the colour wheel compared to the primary colours in the palette) and I have even included the tertiary colours in my 12 colour palette. I prefer to mix this way over the split primary palettes and find them really versatile (but for it to work my experience is that you have to use single pigment colours). Split primary palettes seems to be the main thing spoken about by artists in social media, do you know why this is the case? And have you tried painting with a six colour secondary palette before? I do not mean this as criticism in any way, as split primary palettes seems to be very well established, but I am just curious :)

Personally, the split primaries can mix any color so it's more friendly for budget-challenged artists... But it does take work to mix so I usually have a cheat sheet / color chart ready :) I think there are other reasons but for me, that's it

@@onemig00 Thank you for your reply :) The thing is that I feel like I can mix any colour I want with a 6 colour secondary palette (I like to travel light). So I don't feel it is budget unfriendly at all :) But as I said you need to use watercolour paints with single pigments or you will just get dull mixes. And of course you can't mix primary colours from secondary colours, but you can easily get a more yellow orange for example by mixing orange with yellow. But like everything else with art it of course depends upon preference, the subject and what colours you like,:) It is just two different ways of building your palette: For a split primary you chose warm and cold primary colours, while for a secondary palette you choose three primaries and their contrasting secondary colours. When you add more colours the two types is not that different anymore as the secondary palette will have cold and warm primaries, while the users of a splitt primary palette will often add some secondary colours for convenience :)

@@camillajensen1027 my smallest palette only has 3 colors in small shells ehehe and came from a sampler pack. I like that it has magenta but the blue isn't a cyan. My "ideal" micro palette would have a single pigment of CMY then black and white. I know I know black and white in watercolors are usually taboo ahahah but I have several convenient uses for them :)

@@onemig00 If you only have 3 colours, primary is the only way to go ;) There is no shame in using black and white; just use what makes you happy :)

@@camillajensen1027 If you check out the Handprint watercolor resource online he actually proved a six color primary/secondary set is superior in color spectrum to a split primary. You can go either way. I detest having to mix every single thing I need but I like having the split primaries at the same time. My ideal palette is six primaries, three secondaries, a decent amount of earth tones (with burnt sienna and yellow ochre mandatory), and black.

The thing about sets: I feel like so many manufacturers put some AWFUL colors ("not their best") in their sets. I was gifted a set of DS (not the one you went over) and I have tubes from that company so I know they've got some great paints, but this particular set was awful. I tried the colors and didn't like most of them. It almost seems like a "let's move these paints out then discontinue them" set. One or two "winners" (that I probably wouldn't have tried), and the rest have better alternatives in the DS range. But I need to incorporate some into some paintings to show my appreciation. Schminke's sets don't thrill me either. They've got some GREAT paints, but they don't put their best in a set. (Which is good for me: I buy open stock and pick what I like.) Are you still getting rid of extra supplies from your blog? There are a few I could pick up in full pans (REFILLS, of actual decent shades I'm using up)! Btw, the one I don't have and really would like to try is that Roman Szmal Pzthlmphinblahblah GRAY. It's beautiful. That books looks interesting, as well. I have oil painting books (from of old, when I could paint oil), but perhaps I should have a wc one, too.

Maybe watercolour. You can start with either, and switch to try the other.

My black cube (only) in my colour box has turned mouldy. I tried sunning it but it doesn’t kill the moulds. Is there any solution?
@teohyc
@teohyc 3 жыл бұрын
You've got to remove the mould first. But that box is already infected so under right conditions the mould will grow again. Best way is to keep your paint in the box, and have the box under the sun. I have half my boxes under the sun at my window, and the other half open for ventilation.

I’m at the point where I only look at box sets for manufacturers/brands I haven’t tried yet. They tend to be a little more economical to take the paints for a “test drive” so to speak. Even then, I find I am not a fan of most of the choices in the boxes. Like you, I’m not a fan of cadmium or other opaque colors - and those seem to be staples in sets. I also rarely (ie only when following a tutorial that calls for it and even then I complain about it) ever use “black” watercolor paint but sets inevitably include it. Or white. If 3-5 paints in the set are ones I know I won’t use, it defeats the purpose of buying a set for “convenience.” Sigh. Also as an FYI...Roman Szmal Aquarius Red PR214 is a pigment used by only two brands that I know of. The other is Old Holland Scheveningen Red. Roman Szmal has a number of pigments they use that are either unique to their line or used by only one or two other manufacturers. It’s high on my list of unique pigments I really want to try.
