Thanks, bro. That was helpful. Just discovered how much I love to surf fish a few weeks ago on a cheapie rental. So now I'm back at the beach and going to buy my own set up to get started with. Based on your video I'm going to look for a 10 ft med-light action rod.

I live way up north.. here we can make snowman 2-3 months in row while southern beach people make sandman all year.. so in the summer i drive down with my wife to virginia, north carolina and south carolina…. To us going to north carolina is vacation time.. this summer 2023 we went to Avon in north carolina and i bought a Tica Dolphin 10.6' rod from Frank & Frans Tackle shop.. it,s a small shop but good service and not too expensive.. i really like the Tica Dolphin rod.. better than the ninja they are selling. It can cast very heavy sinker paired with daiwa saltist the tica rod is just superb. Got a 27 inches red drum the first day i got the rod. I only wish that both pieces were equal in size , unfortunately one of the piece is longer than the other.. much longer. Which make it difficult to transport.. because we drive a sedan rods must be short enough to fit in the car .. If you live in a house near the beach in nc you can pretty much buy any kind of rod, even 1 piece surf rod… but people like me who live 1000 miles from the beach or any water , carrying a rod is part of the deal. So mobility is something that we can not ignore, nothing worst than risking to damage your rod because it is too long,, and we need long rods for surf fishing.. atleast i do. In north carolina they sell very nice tournament 15’ surf rod.. at $600 each. They are not in my budget, but they are very nice looking rod.. and for reasons i don't know they are only found in north carolina.. you rarely see those rod outside north carolina. And trust me, i went to many east cost beaches between Maine and Florida.. 15' surf rods are mostly available in north carolina. As for plane travel, again you can not bring 15’ rods on a plane. Max is like 4' tube so whatever rod you bring on a plane should be 4’ in length each piece. So 8' - 12' rods on a plane in a 4’ hard plano case.. so if you go to the Caribbean you have to consider rod length . I personally just bring my reels and few lures and fishbites.. on the island you just rent a rod or buy a cheap one and give it out to a random local when you leave,

There are times when a 4 oz pyramid sinker won’t hold on gulf shores. There can be be a strong west flowing current in the spring. I usually switch to a Sputnik type sinker when 4 oz pyramid rolls.

IMy favorite surf rods up here in NC have been Offshore Angler Ocean Master graphite 11 and 12’ rods. I have two I have used for over 30 years. I recently bought an 11’ Ninja Dagger that has been a bit of a disappointment for this reason. The way I cast needs a rod that has at least a 3” grip above the reel toward the rod tip. I use three fingers to hold the line until released in a cast. The Ninja Dagger has nothing on that upper end above the reel. This saves on the weight of the rod but the blank is just too slick for me to hold that line (braid or mono) adequately when casting. Now the Ninja is a great casting rod for distance but my hand kept slipping. I’m looking to find some way to wrap the rod to make the grip better both above and below the reel seat. Does this make sense to you? I seriously would like an answer. I haven’t talked to Matt at Ninja Tackle but I intend to. Believe me when I say I know a lot of this is my personal preference and I think Ninja Tackle is a great company. If you have any suggestions how to fix this issue I’d love to hear it! Congrats on exceeding 10k subscribers. I enjoy your content!

My favorite advice on this comes from a very well known charter guide from central FL, Capt. Peter Deeks. His advice is to match each piece of gear to the bait presentation first, then the species you are targeting. The idea being that if you can't get the fish to bite first and foremost, then nothing else matters. After that, your next concern (for the reel) is making sure you have enough line to handle the fish. So with surf fishing, you're usually presenting a natural (or synthetic) bait, such as live bait, cut bait, or something like fishbites/fishgum. You won't often be using a 12'+ rod to work a lure. That being the case, a bulkier reel in the 6000-8000 range will usually be an ideal choice. You could go down to a 4000 if you're mainly after whiting and pompano, or up into the true big boys if you want to chase sharks, but 6000-8000 should be the sweet spot for most people. Honestly, most people put FAR too much emphasis on the reel. The rod actually does the vast majority of the work when it comes to casting, presentation, landing the fish, and handling the conditions overall. Back to the main point- if you match each piece of gear to the bait presentation and species targeted, you'll end up with a perfect setup in the end every time.

I have a, 11ft, 12ft, 13ft, 14ft rods, that I use for shore, - rock & surf angling/fishing. Longer rods for heavier weights and to get good casting distance! For me, my 14ft rod is longest I feel comfortable casting with, when I need to, than longer rods! Casting practice Is So Important, using various weights, with different reels, to get used to the various rod lengths and set-ups! I sometimes practice my casting action with a rod only, which helps me too, when I can't get to go fishing for some times! I enjoy watching various casting videos, to see how they cast, which I find inspiring and encouraging! "Catch some Bigger fish!" 🎣_🐠-🐟-🐟-🐠_🎣

Thanks Brad, - My 13ft rod is my general preference. I prefer one length rods! Some of our SA competition anglers use 14ft and up rods, as they target sharks, skates and rays. Some of these species get Really Huge here, and count in the points system! They take their competitive angling, fishing really seriously, as they compete for provincial and national team places! Some of our anglers wade in waist deep or more to cast in if they feel to!.... The rewards are good sometimes!..…. I used a friend's 16ft freshwater rod for a few shore casts, for fun! Was a three ounce sinker on trace. Rod was really bending as I was starting the cast, I didn't achieve any longer distance casts, but it was crazy fun! Some of us use longer rod holders, the rod and reel with line is higher. Most of us wear rod bucket belts, which is suitable with our shorter rod handle section below the reel. Much better than holding a rod under an arm! "Catch some Bigger fish!" 🎣_🐟🐠-🦈-🐠🐟_🎣

What's the smallest rod you'd go with? Say, for whiting in the first trough. I guess the rods need to be heavy to handle the weights required to keep a rig in place but I was wondering if a 7 foot bass rod could work up close to the beach.
@wrightackle1

A neat rod that no one talks about is the okuma Rockaway. They make a ten foot rod that weighs about nine ounces. I saw them at Gray's tackle but if you are not from here they are on Tackle Direct. Pretty much any thing you catch with them would be fun. I never cared for sand spike fishing. Lots more fun to walk the beach with a five gallon bucket and a block of ice with a seven foot spinning rod. Then you don't have to deal with pyramid sinkers just small egg sinkers on a carolina rig.

I've got a 6 n 1/2ft Garcia med heavy Walmart rod that I use in the surf. It's rated to 5/8oz n works great for near shore but you'd be surprised at how far you can sling a 2oz pomp rig. It'll even handle 3oz if you only plan to fish right behind the wash. Just make sure when casting to start slow n sorta just lob it out cause I think it would snap if I tried to really sling it.

@Bearded Brad I am curious why you guys don't seem to use conventional rod/reel setups? I primarily fish in North Carolina/Outer Banks area and the majority of us use 13' heavers with conventional reels when targeting big reds, sharks etc ... The whole point of my comment was simply to point out that in a video where the objective was to inform people about which surf rods might make for a good purchase, not promoting one that is currently unavailable makes sense. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking you for not buying a Bummy Stick (I don't own one either). I do, however, think it's pretty cool that there are people out there who want to support him enough to spend the extra money. Not only that, but even enough of them to sell out within a couple months. I know that just reading comments on the internet can make it seem otherwise, but I'm not trying to argue with you.
