I put an eye bolt through a lacrosse ball and use it to practice. It weighs about 6 ounces and has similar wind resistance to a mullet head. It helps me practice pendulum and lay down casts.

The biggest tip that helped me is safety while casting. You don't realize how much power you can generate leveraging a 10+ foot rod with a 3+ oz weight. Especially on 30 pd or more braid. It can easily shred through your hand and fingers much like a bandsaw and send you to the ER requiring stitches.. personally I use a glove on my dominant hand, but their are other solutions out there as well.

I started watching your videos for tips a few months ago. The next best thing to "being there, actually fishing," is learning from serious anglers who share their knowledge. On my surf-casts, I gently bounce my line twice, and on the third and biggest bounce, I take two steps forward and then swing out. I generally cast further than anybody I see on the beach, and yeah, I get away with 25lb braid catching 3 lb Dungess with 3 oz of weight plus 2 ounces of bait. Super fun! Thanks! hooked up 5 nice Dungeness last weekend in Tomales Bay, CA. Can't wait to go back.

Im a fan of hey skippers. Been subs to it for the past 4yrs+ , ive learn alot regarding the old vid of lure methods, rigs & also the bait. But im gonna advice afew regarding surf casting. First thing choose braided line (30lbs - 50lbs) for your reel . Always always use shock leader (always higher Lbs then your main line. 40lbs - 60lbs) . You also need to use a heavy sinker in order to cast all the weight & line out ( Recommended Size 3 to 5 sinker ). Stronger wave = Heavier Sinker. Always cast out your line at at 45° angle . It will help you push the reel line further & smoother. I hope this help you guys out. Ive been surf casting for over 9yrs. Cheers ♥️👍🏼
@xyncyllx42004 жыл бұрын
I forgot to mention, surf casting rod recommended are from 10ft to 15ft. 2 piece rod has better back bone power compare to 3/4 piece rod. And also for reel size i will recomment size 5000 up to 10000 depanding on how far you can cast & how deep is the water your fishing at. Hope this helps. Cheers ♥️👍🏼

Great video, just a suggestion, when you are on a fish, as you are reeling, slowly make your way towards the water so you don't have to drag the fish over 50 feet of sandy beach. Particularly for a non keeper fish, you want to minimize sand exposure to maximize their chance of living.

It seems strong that in USA the men only have small rods. In Europe people only speak of a surf rod if he has more than 13 feet otherwise you have a spinning rod. I always use my 16.48 feet (5 meter) rods. Only as a tip, if you want to do surf cast, you cannot do your lead 1.5 feet under the tip of your rod to throw in, leave the length of your line to the bottom eye to throw in. This way De Lijn conveys more power to your throw. For the rest it is a nice contribution again. Thx Friend

I have always been reluctant to comment because you catch a lot of fish and I don't mean to criticise. Everyone has his own style. Here in Europe we do a lot of Surfcasting and it's different at the mediterranean from the Atlantic. But if you have a look at the way they surf cast in the UK you'd be surprised with the solutions that they've come up with... Tackle wise and on how to cast. I see people mentioned pendulum casting which works great with multiplier reels but these days they developed great rods for fixed spool reels that will launch your bait to the horizon with a symple "off-the-ground" cast. We also let the lead hang lower when casting, more or less near the first eye of the rod and the reel is pointed upwards more, then giving it a good swing (let the blank do it's work) pointing the rod upwards. Great examples TA Fishing, Sandmans Tackle, Danny Moeskop...

Im just back from a surf fishing vacation in virginia and North Carolina. It was so great.. i got a 27 inches red drum.. using a 10 feet rod. I live in a dense urban city 10 hours driving from the nearest beach.. but to get to my favourite beaches.. usually viriginia, north and South Carolina i have to drive down 800 miles atleast. So those who live near a beach are so dam lucky,, i even fished with the local at the dock .. those local fishermen , mostly old retired vets catching small croker every morning.. they make my day.. but i prefer surf fishing on the beach.. now about the video., there is one thing i have problem when i cast is the exact moment you need ro release the line.. the finger.. sometime i release the finger a little too late which end up in a fail.. releasing (opening) the finger has to be in sync with the swing. I also tend to release the finger too soon.. which end up casting pretty high in the sky.. As for the rod holders, i bought a couple of the white pvc rod holder because they are affordable.. the aluminum rod holder are so dam exepensive and they seem to scratch the rod.. and potentially scratch the car if youre not carefull . Another thing about surf fishing is sand.. sand can damage a fishing reel.. i lost a $125 reel once.. because i left the rod lay down on the beach.. while i was trying to unhook a fish.. that was 2 years ago.. last week during my vacation i was so exited when i got the 27 inches red drum that i did the same mistake. I put the rod on the beach to unhook and totally forgot about the sand.. luckily this time the sand did not get into the reel .. but during that week so many time sand got on the reel….l sand and reel management is such an art to skill.. next year vacation i will have to figure how to avoid gettijg sand on reel.. my new $250 saltist daiwa reel survived this year surf fishing trip.. csn't wait next year

Pick a spot 45 degrees above the water to cast at and add power only at the end of your cast. Look into a Breakaway cannon, it will save your finger and allow for more power on the cast. They also make rigs that clip the bait to the lead and prevent the helicoptering that happens. Lastly please use a shock leader for power casting.
@FishermanATX4 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with you here! Or even use breakaway rods. You will be amazed how light they are and how far they can cast 😊

Hey skipper can suggest one surf rod for long casting under 100$
@DustyTheDog4 жыл бұрын
Another thing to note is holding the rod in the right orientation. There are two spine on a rod, the soft and the hard spine. the hard spine runs on the bottom side of the rod, for a spinning rod the same side as the reel. This spine is more stiff and is what allows for the hook setting power, but also it remains stiff when casting and has a stronger spring reaction than the soft spine. Turning your rod even just a few degrees, something done by just loosening your wrist and letting it flex, can greatly affect both accuracy and distance. My advice is to make sure you hold the rod with the guides straight up or straight down, depending on rod(casting or spinning). Hold that wrist strong when making hard casts.

let out more line when you cast. Start with the lead on the ground and fully load the rod then use the same method you are using. Once you have that down you can move to a pendulum where you are swinging the lead to load the rod instead of working it off the ground. Also, a clipped down rig will throw farther still as you get a more streamlined bait.

A couple of tricks that have proved very beneficial for me: 1) Let out more line and lay it back on the sand directly behind you. This will load the rod better than having the bait/lure hanging off the end of the rod. 2) Get a casting glove or a Breakaway Cannon (don't get any of the cheap imposters...they just don't work as well). Either of these two will let you put MUCH more pressure into your rod WITHOUT cutting you to the bone with the braid. I am working on the pendulum cast...Timing is very crucial and I am still working on perfecting it to be able to cast well over 120 yards with an 11' rod. Hope this helps...
