One thing I have learned over time is that it's, at times, better to make your own sketchbook with loose leaf paper. It isn't for everyone, but this allows you to choose your own paper and style of binding. At first I was intimidated by making a sketchbook, but there are many easy to follow tutorials out there as well! :)

I'm a beginner too. I used to use the mixed media canson book but the paper quality isn't great. It is better to try art type in periods of time to save money. I'm still figuring out what I really like but, mixed media papers usually deter me from art, since I end up thinking I'm super bad at art.

@Igusia20017 жыл бұрын
How does the weight of a paper affect it? I've heard you and other artists mention the weight of the paper their working with but never actually understood what kind of a difference it makes
@WindyIris7 жыл бұрын
The weight of the paper refers to how heavy it is and thus how thick the paper is. 300gm watercolor paper is much thicker than 200gm paper and with cope with more water and paint etc. I like to draw on thicker paper, so I like the 180gm sketchbooks - I find the thicker paper is better for the effects I want, like blending - its really a personal preference:)

Windy Iris Art Can I ask? What does 100 lbs means in my drawing block cover?😐

I've been using the Piccadilly spineless sketchbooks for a few months now, I find that they can take light watercolour washes and that alcohol based markers usually don't bleed onto the next page. My two major complaints is that heavy, darker sketches rub onto the opposite page, and that I can't use my usual ballpoint pens to do line art, as it bleeds pretty heavily. Still, 9/10, would recommend!

I prefer a slight modification of your tip to take out the last page of the sketchbook to prevent bleeding through to the next page. I simply cut a piece of actual marker paper to the right size and use that. Then no amount of ink can ever get through to that next page as it is specifically designed for the job. Otherwise your fate is in the hands of the paper gods who may ordain that your torn out page may occasionally bleed through if totally saturated.

Yes that's a good tip:)

I'm currently using the Ryman's Softcover Sketchbook in A5 size. It says that it's not suitable for watercolour but I've put some light washes in there without much trouble other than some slightly buckling but it's a sketchbook so that doesn't bother me. I like the sketchbook so much because the soft cover feels less intimidating than a hard cover book which always feels like it needs everything to be at it's best. This one is my comfy curl up on the sofa and draw sketchbook. I used the Lyndhurst ink and wash pad by Daler-Rowney for Inktober a few years ago and that took ink and marker nicely and the pages are lovely and smooth. I keep meaning to re-buy that one. I also often buy the Winsor & Newton Cartridge Sketch pads in both A4 and A5 sizes as they are reasonably cheap and have smooth paper so I use them a lot for sketching. My latest purchase was the Royal and Langnickel Rich Colour Sketchbook in the larger size from The Range. The paper feels a bit cheap but it's not awful. It was only £4.99 and has 200 pages in it which is the main reason why I bought it. My plan is to fill it up with anatomy studies so I'm not looking for anything spectacular to use, just something to use as a solid workbook which I can use up without worrying about whether I'm "wasting" expensive paper.

This was really helpful so thank you for that!! But I usually used to draw on normal printer paper because I had no idea otherwise and the paper obviously is super thin so my drawings would crease, especially while erasing. I’ve decided to get a more high quality sketchbook now and I’m really confused on what I should look for. I always draw with graphite (so just normal pencils) and I’ve also ordered prismacolor coloured pencils so when they arrive, I’m gonna be trying to draw portraits, eyes, still life and things like that with them. I really wanted to get toned tan because I know the white colour will pop especially while drawing eyes, but I noticed so many artists use the paper as one of their values in their drawings but I want to draw with graphite/coloured pencil and kind of shade and highlight myself, so covering the paper and not using it as one of the values in my drawing. I’m still kind of confused on what I should get, like idk if I should get one that’s smoother paper like the Canson ones you said or one that’s more textured or toned paper. I don’t want to buy one that’s kind of pricey and then not like it and realize it’s not good for what I’m doing, so does anyone have any advice for which one would be best for the things I’ve listed? Sorry for the long comment haha i really don’t know anything about art supplies smh
@WindyIris6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. Its a bit difficult to advise because what I like maybe not be what will work best for you but I would definitely pick up a toned tan sketchbook (you can color in the whole page and easily not use the color of the paper as a value). The toned tan also works really well with the Prismacolor pencils. I would also pick up a white sketchbook as well, I would go for a smother paper as the Prismacolors tends to work better on smother paper. Nothing too expensive, maybe one of the other Strathmore sketchbooks - to be honest it depends where you live in the world and what brands are available to you. You might also consider getting a pad of bristol board and see if you like working on that - that's good for colored pencils:) Hope this was helpful.

@@artwithoggs8210 Great! I also found after replying to your comment that you can get a mild coloured leuchtturn sketchbook by selecting blank pages under the mild options. Just so you know!

WHERE DID YOU GET THE PURPLE ONE WITH THE DREAMCATCHER ON IT

The best for me would probably be the leuchtturm 1917 sketchbook because I would usually just use pen pencil and or markers to draw.

This is very informative! We don't really have art stores in the Philippines they're very rare so art supplies are mostly from bookstores and such. I'm on,y vaguely familiar with canson lol the others I don't think are available here. I've found some really nice mixed media sketchbooks with quite thick paper in the stationary section of some department stores but they're usually unbranded so there's that.

Thick paper is always nicer to work on - I sometimes find nice sketchbooks in stationery supplies stores as well, they often have much prettier covers I think:)

Try online art stores! There are many around Manila.

I like all sketchbooks, but I need one that works for alcohol based markers and lays flat. I don't do soft cover, it just doesn't feel or look visually appealing to me.

The only one problem in Finland, is that nearly ALL the sketchbooks are covered in plastic. You cant see if the pages are thick enough. What should i do?
@WindyIris6 жыл бұрын
Do the sketchbooks have labels on the covers? I would look and see if the gram of the paper is listed. The higher the grams, the thicker the paper. 300gm would be a very thick card, like a watercolor paper and 70gm is a normal computer printer paper. I like to go for a sketchbook that is somewhere in the middle, the yellow sketchbooks I use have 180gm paper. Hope this is helpful:)

I recently started to like drawing and in Japan, notebooks are super expensive (ok the country's everything is expensive) and i found a really good sketchbook from Amazon, aaaaaaand when it came it was like the size of like, REALLY big. but i think its good because you can put many drawings in one page, and i dont waste pages. but this video was REALLY RELLY HELPFUL and i checked ur channel and i loved it so....yea...i subscribed. :)

Thanks for subscribing - big sketchbooks are fun. I find them a bit intimidating personally but they are great for fitting lots of things in:)

Sorry to necropolis but where can I find that exact daler rowney sketchbook you have? I'm looking for a spiral notebook hardcover not too big and smooth pages
@Dani_10126 жыл бұрын
I would love a mid size spiral sketchbook that can hold both watercolour and markers, as well as the pages have to be thick since I like them that way
@WindyIris6 жыл бұрын
You could have a look at the Pink Pig sketchbooks (I have a review on the channel), they sound like they would fit what you want:)

I don't have a favorite because I don't like drawing in/on books - I find it very counter-intuitive. The edge of the stack of paper is always in the way, and a myriad of other ergonomic and practical hindrances.

To everyone here I recommend the illo sketchbook it does ghost in the back of the paper a bit but it is perfect for Co Pic markers and pencils and watercolor markers and brush pens. It's a really good sketchbook

I used an mixed media sketchbook from Bienfang for sketching. Is that okay? Because it was the first sketchbook that I had. I now have a regular sketchbook from the same company.
@WindyIris7 жыл бұрын
Of course that's okay:) You can use whatever works best for you - I'll have to look up that brand. I've never heard of them.

What's the best sketchbook for mixed media? I'd really like to start using watercolours and markers for my next one but I'm afraid I'll get one that either bleeds through or something

Have you heard of sketchbook cream paper? I had one but I don't know if they are actually good for drawing.

Well, I use markers/watercolours and I usually buy a watercolour sketchbook (from fabrio) and I don't know if I should keep using markers because in my town I just can find that type...
@nefertitimontoya7 жыл бұрын
Renata Trindade use amazon or dickblick or jerry's artarama or other online sites if you can. You can also make marker sketchbooks yourself if you're really dedicated (check out SeaLemon for bookbinding tutorials). It may be hard, but you can always work around not having resources :) my advice would be to never let that stop you!
@WindyIris7 жыл бұрын
Hi Renata, I think you should use whatever you feel works best for you - I myself don't like to use markers in watercolor sketchbooks because I can't get the blending to be how I like it but I think its definitely a good idea to go with a sketchbook you can get locally. I have in the past made my own sketchbooks out of marker paper - I don't actually use a "marker" sketchbook. I use the Leuchtturm which is an all round sketchbook, but just works well with markers, so sometimes experimenting can work well:)
@WindyIris7 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree Nefertiti - always work with the supplies you can get:)
