Nice to see Guy Barters face, I reconised the voice immediately from the RHS podcasts. Great idea

Thank you for a very informative video. I remember being taught about about green manuring over 50 years ago and have practiced this method of enriching the soil many times since. Mustard seed has always been my choice to sow but interesting to see wild bird seed as a cheaper option. I must admit this choice of seed is new to me!

Thank you for the advice, I do have one or two questions though. Don’t the birds eat the seed?! ..and it has been raining very hard here recently, should I tap the seed in with the rake instead of treading it in? Thank you

Hi there, yes the birds will eat the seed, as they do with quite a few vegetable seed if they get the chance! Slightly covering the seeds with soil and raking them in might help. And tapping seeds in with a rake is definitely better for damp soil.

My neighbour rather overloaded her bird feeder with bird seed and a lot of it spilled. Come the summer a lush, healthy crop was growing vigorously. Unfortunately it wasn't a legal plant! Could your advice get some gardeners into a heap of trouble?

It’s now approaching October, when is the latest I could plant these seeds?

Hello - it would depend where you lived, but ryegrass is good to try as this grows all winter.
