Braid pros for me 1) Can respool lees often 2) No memory issues 3) Limited space on the kayak and can make less rods work for more things by changing leader size 4) More sensitive Cons 1) Breaking off and having to put on new leader 2) Apparently being noisy and scaring fish I’m curious if larger braid makes more noise than smaller diameter? I find braid under 40 pound digs like crazy
@ChronicalsofAl Жыл бұрын
Skunko, My experience is that higher poundage braid is slightly louder , although it may only be that it's a lower pitched sound so it may just appear that way to me. Interesting question! Let's see if the boys respond

Just tried 20 lb J-braid Grand (Gray Light), and so far it's been A-mazing!! Smooth casts, amazing sensitivity, and awesome hook setting!! Will be spooling all my higher end spinning rods with this exact braid and color. I had it straight braid with no leader and caught three large mouth back to back!! They must not see this color. I love the statement that you said "there is no right or wrong, it's all personal preference and what works" I used to think that cheap fluoro was just as good as super expensive.......until I used some higher priced sunline vs yo-zuri. With most of the cheaper fluoro Ive tried.....it's wiry and has crazy memory, and after not using it very long it gets even stiffer and almost seems brittle. I've tried dozens of fluoro from trilene to tatsu. I really love the DAIWA SAMURAI FLUOROCARBON. It is extremely supple and if not as abrasion resistant as tatsu, it sure is close. I do not like braid at all really. I only use it because I have to sometimes. I use it on spinning rods to not get line twist and to get extra casting distance. Then I have 1 casting rod with it on there pretty much exclusively for frogs. Thats it. I dont use it on treble topwater baits, I dont really like to use it for frogs honestly, but theres not any frogs that are weedless that also have very thin hooks. There are some frogs that have very finesse style thin hooks that are strong enough to pull big bass out without bending, but they aren't weedless enough to through in the thickest goop. The only ones that seem truly weedless have thicker bodies and thicker hooks so you need the braid to get a somewhat decent hookset. Maybe that's what I need to invent......a completely weedless frog that has thin gfinesse style hooks that are still strong, that you can throw on fluoro or some type of floating copolymer and still get good hooks in the fish. But yeah I don't use braid on swimjigs or anything else. Im a firm believer that with throwing swim jigs or flipping heavy cover, or punching, you still want to use a thin gfinesse style hook. I will on very rare occasions punch with braid or throw up into thick vegetation or wood just so I can feel a little better, but I still use thinner hooks. I can maybe count on one hand the amount of times I've lost a fish due to not having stout enough hooks to rip it out of mats or something.......but there have been DOZENS of times that I have failed to get a good hookset because the hooks I was using were too thick or stout.

Damn. Just discovered you. Thought I knew everything I needed to know about line. WRONG. Most intrigued about the idea of sound caused by braid. Admittedly, I've been a "braid-to-leader" guy for virtually all situations, but am gradually leaning more towards "fluoro for reaction" "braid for grass, feel, or finesse." Your insights have helped immensely. Also, your theory of big braid only ...I need to process that. You've given me a lot to think about. Thanks.

I’ve been using braid to a leader for everything for years. I have used fluoro for cranking and it just doesn’t feel right to me. I use a softer moderate rod and turn my drag down when using braid for cranking and have developed a feel for that. It’s hard to step away from what you’re used to.

I think that in situations where people are lake fishing a traditional highland reservoir it is always better to fish fluoro, although a pond or grass fisherman will end up using braid to leader because getting fish up and out of cover is critical. More parabolic rods with braid reduce the likelihood of losing fish drastically but those same rods don’t transition to fluoro too well unless they’re already heavier rods. I think that under ideal circumstances anglers would have set ups for lakes and set ups for grass fisheries where there isn’t much overlap so that each thing is maximized in its respective area. I could probably go further but I think the idea is there. 😅

I use Casting and spinning on jerkbaits. Coming from the saltwater side and throwing jerkbaits for Bonita etc I get a better rhythm with the spinning rod. Plus easier to get longer casts with some of the jerkbaits especially ones that are smaller and ones without a weight transfer system
@Tbowie13 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely spot on about that braid noise Ben! I've tried it for jerkbaits before as well, and it makes a ton of noise snapping on the top of the water. Unless I'm Punching, or using a spinning set up it's Fluoro for me as well! One thing that seems to make the line easier to use is "Reel Magic" spray, besides fishing almost everyday. 😉

You touched on it very briefly at the end but I really believe in the "tuning" aspect of various lines. The fact that you can literally change action/power of a rod with line choice could be a topic for an entirely different video.

Great Vid, sooo much info that all makes sense. Based in the UK I'd say 90% of people use braid as opposed to straight fluoro. From my pov I'm 50/50, sometimes its braid to leader sometimes its straight fluoro and sometimes its co-poly (trout). 90% of my fishing is bottom contact in 2>5ft using 0.75>3g weights lures so I'm a full BFS guy (just dont get on with spinning reels) so my go to is light braid (under 8lb) but more recently Ive been fishing straight 3lb fluoro with the same if not better results as I can feel bites in windy conditions. Anyway....your vid has given me loads of food for thought. 👍

well I am "that guy in florida" and I run 100% braid.. braid to mono leader on trebles bait (never fluoro leader always mono! unless it's under 10lbs leader). glidebaits/swimbaits 80lb-65lb braid to 6' to 8' 20lb-30lb mono leader. A-rigs 50lb braid to 8' 20lb mono leader (also all weedless ewg rigged swimbaits on all my a-rigs). Spinnerbaits/chatterbaits/buzzbaits, 30lb-50lb braid to 6'-7' 17lb-20lb mono leader, t Topwater/jerkbaits/crankbaits 30lb braid to 6'-7' 12lb-17lb, mono leader. Texas rig/senkos/jigs/swimjigs/ 30lb-50lb straight braid. Frogs/punching 50lb-65lb straight braid. only fluoro i own is for leader on my spinning rods that hardly even make onto my boat. I haven't spooled a baitcaster with fluoro in about three years.. that being said most of my water isn't clear (but some is super clear) and deep here is anything below 10'. in fact there are only a couple lakes I fish the get below 15' in the DEEP hole (and I fish big lakes. not ponds).. and almost ever cast is around/through/over vegetation/wood (sometimes gators), and most of the is on the heavy side. most of my glidebait fishing is super clear water but in 1'-3' of water. also I do admit that you have to change the action of the rods and how you play the fish (if their not in 100lbs of hydrllia) to make all that braid work. their are areas in florida that do have a lot more deep crankin and other deep water techniques, but I fish there so rarely that I just put on a long lighter leader. Still love all the info you dropped! I just happened to be that (florida man)... haha cheers!

Personally I always use braid to fluorocarbon on Mono leader with leader length depending on situation and it works great however I use straight braid on pitch and flipping setups, but I will use a crazy long leader on certain things and I ALWAYS use an FG knot braid to leader and ALWAYS use a double pitzen to connect to the lure

Fish Free Rig a lot with 14# mono haven’t had any problems. Throw a lot of Top Water & Squarebills on 10# to 14# also. But back in the day when Flipping 1st got going , I would use 20 to 25# test back then. I don’t have a lot of heavy cover where I fish. Mostly open water and some Rip Rap. Stretch I do have some especially on long hook sets. Sensitivity I would think I loose some , but I count on the quality of my rods sensitivity. The Mono just works well for me . I’ve used it for well over 40 yrs. But I do change out my line frequently. Just works for me.

good info. Not sure about FC not being stretchy though. Every kind I've tried stretches just about as much as mono for me. The best part about you guys is you usually say if it's working for you don't change. I fish so differently from you style, all braid to leader except frogs. I use 20, 30, 40, 50lb braid and don't have any issues. The occasional line dig after setting the hook on a fish never bugs me, I just make a quick cast to clear it. Tried straight FC, but couldn't enjoy it. Also costs too much to change it out for me. Maybe if I owned a tackle shop I'd feel differently about changing it out. haha

Thank you for all the info on this. I still only use co poly on my big baits with treble hooks and if it ain’t broke don’t fix it like you said. I can’t afford to lose big 250$ swim baits and that extra stretch I feel helps me not break off and stay loaded up. when I was straight flouro I would break off more. Obviously there are more cons floats/stretch but the pros I can afford to re-spool every time out

Great video guys! I like the info on the A-rig, great point to think about with the line causing vibration. I’m curious about the Chatter bait on braid being a terrible choice for it. Over the years braid to leader has been the best choice for the chatter bait for me, I catch piles of fish every year on the chatter bait and I have an amazing hookup to land ratio. I can only think of one fish I’ve lost on the chatter bait in the last couple years. That fish exploded in a run straight at me and the rod never had a chance to load up and I couldn’t catch up to her to get a good hookset.

After fishing with braid I can't go back to mono or Flouro. I've become so accustomed to it's sensitivity when I've tried fishing straight Flouro or mono again it feels like I'm fishing with a rubber band. it drives me insane. Braid to leader is the only way to go for me. I can change leader size, length and material very quickly to adapt to the situation at hand. I can change to mono for top water, Flouro for clear water or hard cover where I need the extra abrasion resistance. Mono has an average of 30% stretch and Flouro is about 15% when you think of it in simple math you have anywhere from 15' to 30' feet off stretch for every 100' of line. How many bites are people missing with that much stretch in their line. At the end of the day fish what works just as you said.

I will say on the topic of reaction baits on spinning gear, for bass it's a little weird but throwing smaller reaction baits for trout (with your Megabass Great Huntings, Duo Spearhead Ryukis/Rozantes/Realis Minnow 80SPs) is perfect for spinning and with 100% fluoro. Although there is BFS for that too so maybe it's still weird 🤣

Yes braid will dig into itself at smaller diameters. Even 30ib will dig itself. But going up to those 65-70ib braid, you still lose casting distance just as you do with floro/mono when you increase line diameter. Its just not as drastic of a difference in distance when going up in diameter with braid in comparison to mono/floro.

If you’re fishing certain techniques in grass a 4 carrier like Power Pro Maxcuattro can be a huge benefit. Ben openly admits here that he “wishes they wouldn’t make braid in 30, 40, and 50lb test” so he’s probably not the best guy to answer your question.

Fishing line may be the single most confusing thing In fishing. Over the years it has determined the types of rods and reels we use. There has been so many confusing marketing gimmicks also that have been used. I use all the different lines but to be honest I am starting to lean more to going back to an old coal polymer line And still catching as many fish At a lesser cost to me. I do feel sorry for anyone who puts Floral carbon on a spinning real. That is highway robbery on the part of the people recommending it.
